Hi! My name's Lenny and I'm an Australian filmmaker living in Austin, TX. Since the age of 15, I've wanted to make films and whilst I've made a bunch of short films, a web series and countless short-form videos, I've yet to reach that elusive feature film! This is me documenting my journey of writing, producing and directing my first feature film, sharing what I learn along the way!
DJI Lidar - Panasonic LUMIX GH6 Autofocus Upgrade?
My goal was to see whether the DJI LiDAR Autofocus is a worthwhile upgrade to give you usable autofocus on the Panasonic GH6? In this video, I test and set up the autofocus system with the GH6 and the Ronin RS3 Pro. I show some test footage and share my verdict on whether I would continue to use this setup!

So, 35mm on MFT is really 70mm. Not so useful, or am I missing something ?
can you connect the Lidar Focus Pro to the GH4 Panasonic?
Which cable did you use that worked for the lydar? Im having the same issue
Is there any longer usbc cable for the lydar or any way to make it longer. Ive tried using some of my usbc cables and they dont work
I love this combo. Using it about 2 years. I have switched to GH7 recently and considering to buy 75mm. The lens flares are ok but the veiling they produce in very contrast scenes is not always wanted. The flares looks good in futuristic/urban enviroment but I dont like them when people use them in wedding videos or nature. It is just my taste. But overall the Sirui 35mm F1.8 has amazing image quality. I really like it. Another thing I am considering is getting Sirui Mars kit those flares are not so prominent especially on 24mm.
Is it possible to use the DJI Lidar with the Panasonic DMW-XLR2 XLR Microphone Adapter at the same time?
Do we have to have the handle thing to take advantage of the Lidar?
can I automatically zoom and focus at the same time with 2 motors?
if you use L mount lenses then there is a setup where you don't need the motors at all instead the lidar communicate with the camera thru the gimbal and use lens internal focus motor
Happy..ๆ... Songkran day 2567ครับ❤❤😂😂😂
Please do a video with the rs4 pro, gh6, leica 12-35 or 12-60 and new lidar. Thank you
Does the gimbal power/charge the gh6 battery when connected?
which gimbal is needed to use this Lindar? which one is the one in this video? Thank you
DJI RS3, save your money for the new SR4 and the new Lidar that is way better than this.

Great video. I have been using the GH5s for 6 years now and love it. I am a bit concerned about the GH6 having a fan but do love its features.
You don’t have to take all those steps to used the LiDAR using the GH6 autofocus lens ua-cam.com/video/AXg5o9FJvsQ/v-deo.htmlsi=LPBfWCJjFruN8mdK
So they offer a 1.3 and a 1.8 cause I thought the mft 35mm was 1.8
GH6 is god teir
You had a monitor set up on one of the clips via the hdmi, do you get the screen for the Lidar on this swell?
It's slow, wobbly, and soft at distance, close up it seems okay but the wobbling in track is terrible.
Take a camera (GH5/ GH6) with one of the best IBIS+OIS, and learn basic manual focus techniques, and you should be golden… Cost effective plus learned a usable practical skill… 🤔
it will be nice if the lidar system can communicate with panasonic software, so it can give instructions or feedback to the camera when we are using the lens with internal non linear motorized autofocus
It can with the latest update / partnership with DJI & LUMIX
Lidar keeps you in focus even if the scene is pitch black. Great for low light or night shooting.
Oh that's a really great benefit to point out, thank you!
Thanks for the video. Can you adjust the sensitivity of the Active track, so the camera doesn't move with SMALL movements by the subject? Meaning, can it be set so that the subject has to mover further before active track starts to move the camera?
no
So basically, it doesn’t work with the sigma 18 to 35? I was considering getting the LiDAR focus for that set up but now I don’t know what to do.
Yes, my understanding is that you need lenses with hard stops for the LiDAR calibration. I found this on the DJI forum where a few people have some hacks to get around this limitation, but I haven't tried any of these yet, and not sure how well they would work, but thought I'd share anyway: forum.dji.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=235065
Seems like a lot of hassle just to be in focus.
That's a good point to add! I wouldn't recommend this setup _just_ to get better focus on your camera. But if using the RS3 Pro is already part of your setup, then adding the LiDAR focus could be worthwhile for you.
Yes, it DOES look like a hassle. But... if you shoot with Panasonic cameras with contrast-detect AF only (or shoot with manual focus lenses), it's either this or pull focus manually (or, buy a Sony camera).
HeyZeus!! Fantastic sir - I'm starting a podcast and this is a nice surprise! Cheers.
Thank you!
Do you use an exsternal recorder or the Cfexpress cards?
I would pick the GH6 or the G9 ii. I have two GH5s and a GH5 ii. I shoot primarily live theatre, concerts, and dance shows. I already have a pretty good collection of MFT glass. I also appreciate have cameras that are easy to match while editing.
Correction. If you still don't know it by now, the GH6 does not shoot in open gate 60fps. It's actually 4K with the illusion of looking like a 6K format.
It is 5.8k 30p open gate or 4.4k 60p open gate
excellent tutorial, thank you!
Thank you!
nice review! thnk you
i wanted all the things you said but also auto focus.....yeah you may laugh but its a big step up from my BMPCC4K, i watched the GH6 for a year and yes the price was to high ...then i saw a rebate code on amazon that took £400 off the price taking it to 1300....I got so many MFT lens i wont give them up...I have a GX8 too so its a no brainer i like the size and price of the lens now added the anamorphics to the collection and 6k HD at 300fps love it.
🎉not this world. Beautiful film.Thank You
Great video! I am on the fence between Panasonic S5 and gh6. For me the look of the S5 looks better
at 5:55 you said the gh6 can shoot 6k 60fps internally. How are you doing that? mine is updated to the newest firmware 2.2 and only goes up to 5.7k 30fps. Am I missing something? please help lol
You can only shoot it on the CFexpress type b card
No battery grip for the gh6 is really killing it for me. Im pretty done with jerry rigging power solutions. I think all cameras should just have 12volt barrel connectors now. Btw on the 6kpro 1 battery is about an hour and ive gotten 3 hours with the grip which is pretty nice.
S5 does shoot internal 6k but only for 15mins
s5 2 has everything you want

Come and have fun….Songkarn festival April 13-15 ,2023.
เย้ ปีนี้จะได้สาดน้ำกันสักที Well come to Songkran Thailand 2023🎉🎉🎉
And the loy kratong is something not to miss also since it's also a 3 day event😅
With our work, the GH6 is the best choice. We produce a lot of PSAs, commercials and events. The stabilization and high frame rate options allow us to shoot in 4k 120 for everything and let's us get silky slow motion on demand for any scene. Interviews we just 5.7K and cropping in looks much nicer now. The low light is improved dramatically and with just a touch of noise reduction onboard, there's not much grain at all. The ONLY gripe, which doesn't affect us, is autofocus pulsing, which is still a thing. This is because to get 10bit, high frame rate etc, requires a small sensor or it overheats like all the other full frame rigs. I'd love to have the bokeh of full frame, but honestly, using a sigma at 1.3 or 1.1 F stop gets me there most of the time and isn't worth the other tradeoffs. For us, when funding permits, we'd like GH6 for field, and Canon for interviews (or other full frame). Some other cons, no live streaming built in, which should be for this type of camera in 2023, and the AUTO WHITE BALANCE is terrible as it shifts while recording and doesn't lock on resulting in terrible results for editing later. I'd buy this camera again no problem.
That makes a lot of sense. What Canon would you use for interviews?
@@myenglishgig5182 I'd look at the R5, but it really depends on needs and budget. The options are crazy and if Canon can just solve the overheating issues, they could own the market. Don't know why they just didn't add a fan as most people could live with that happily instead of limitations. Anyway, it's great to have all these options and prices are not bad at all considering the capabilities and time we get out of them
I really liked that you listed all these other cameras as well!
Songgran not Songkran
Songkran อะถูกแล้ว
For my needs the GH6 was the best fit, I need good Stab, Open gate 4/3 so I'm not having to rotate the camera and reshoot for social, For my main video content (walking tours) I need Deep DOF even in lower Fstops, so the MFT or APSC fit the bill there. I was able to find the focal lengths I want in MFT for much less than in APSC or Full frame, Just in the lens costs I saved more than the cost of the camera itself. Is it perfect? No not even close. If money hadn't been a factor I would probably own an A7s3 but after the body and lenses I desired it was well out of my price range for a hobby that doesn't make me money yet.
