Whats a tokos grocery? I dont find such thing in Utrecht. Btw, the title of the video is misleading. I was hoping to get a complete breakup of every costs in a month & a rough number of the total sum. Otherwise, its informative.
A toko is a small store mostly owned by foreigners, Syrian, Turkish, Indonesian, Chinese etc. The original name is Indonesian as far as I know. There are also tokos only selling take out meals, freshly baked and with fresh ingredients.
Public transport outside the Randstad is rather bad.
The prices usually in Noord Holland are super expensive. I live in the South and usually, the rent is 900 euros max. I pay 700 for a 2 bedroom apartment in Limburg.
I recommend Delft
"I currentl live in Amersfoort, which is a smaller town and so it's been really tough for me to actually meet other international people" This doesn´t need to be so: as one of the hosts I can tell there is such an opportunity the second and forth wednesday of the month from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm at no 5 Zuidsingel. It would be an exageration to say it's already a resounding success, but we're convinced there's a need for this and will become a success if we manage to get more publicity. Perhaps an idea to make a video about this initiativ and it's visitors.
Great video! Without getting lost in the weeds, it seems cost of living is still less than the US? Yes trains are not cheap, but compared to owning, insuring, fueling and repairing a car, it’s way less. Healthcare? NL seems way more cost effective. For basics of eggs, bread, veggies and beer😊, when I was in AH last November, prices seemed better. I’m from the northeast US so even the rents are not shocking at all.
@@peterf1 Yes, for some things it’s much cheaper here! So for renting it’s waaaay less than in the US. But, I’d say I spend more here on trains that I ever did with my car in the US (it’s paid off so i’m accounting for gas + insurance). In fact, a lot of families here own a car because it’s cheaper to transport a family of four by car rather than buying a train ticket. Also, bread at AH is pretty cheap, also bakery items but other things I think are on par with the US. I spend about the same in that area but I also lived in a big city! And for healthcare i think it depends on your situation. I had a subsidy from the government so I was only paying like $75 a month for really good health insurance in the US. The dutch also give subsidies though so I’ll see what I can get back during tax season!
@@boomdoze Fair enough. Thanks for the great response. Look forward to more of your videos. Cheers.
Very excited to get into this one! The oddest part to me was that my partners’ apartment doesn’t come with things like a dishwasher, oven, washer/dryer!
hii! yes!! that’s actually an upcoming video hahaa 😄
@ that’s an awesome topic!! Talk about culture shock on that one! 😂 Looks like I will be moving into her place in early April!
If you want a cheap apartment in the Netherlands, go outside the Netherlands. I recommend Baarle Hertog. Belgian apartments and houses aren't cheap in any way, but it's much less hard to find something and it's still objectively less expensive. You're still basically in the Netherlands but not in a Dutch apartment with Dutch prices.
The free bikes often need work, which you must be able to do, and it will cost you some money. Chain guards are often broken, or they need new tires, etc. Often puts you in the same price range as a usable bike. Anything below 50 euros or so probably isn't much better.
@@jodocusonbenul very true!!
I am Dutch, but live in Australia, the housing crisis is big here as well, lots of people line up for one house, and the one that offers the most money will likely get it, my son pays 600.00 dollars a week, plus water...groceries have gone beyond ridiculous, the world has lost its mind!
oh woww!! yeah that’s exactly how it is here - there can be hundreds of applications for one apartment! And like you said, typically the highest offer wins (which is how I got my apartment as well). The only bright side for me is that housing is still cheaper here than it is in major cities in the US. So although I bid higher I’m still paying less. Still sucked looking for a house though - it took me 3 months and pure luck!
Yes, that seems the way all over, glad you found something, America seems expensive too, groceries as well, it looks like it is the same everywhere @boomdoze
I live in the City of Tilburg. I pay 580 euro per Month for appartement with 2 bedrooms.
Oh wow! Is that social housing or free market?
To my experience Dirk vd Broek is a great third option, since it's on par with Jumbo and AH, but the prices are comparable with the price fighters. Also the fish store in front has the best lekkerbekjes from Amersfoort;-)
Oh, yeah definitely! As I was editing I realized I missed a few grocery stores because I don’t go there as much as AH and jumbo. Thanks for the tip for others though ☺️💗
hiii! thanks for watching 💖
As a Dutchie I use American Express as much as possible. Jumbo is the only grocery store that accepts creditcards. You have to know which store accepts them.
Amersfoort! I went to highschool there. Grew up in a small village nearby ❤
Netherlands is like a terrible deppressive country, you dont have much freedom as a kid, and the poeple here are just horrible, and the country barelly has any sunlight and it just looks really depressive too
Mastercard should be accepted everywhere in the Netherlands. Maestro is being phased out. So, if a grocer doesn't accept it, that's quite rare.
Thanks for your video. The Dutch infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists is extremely good. Difficult to compare with the US, which is 250 times as big. Population density here is 416 per square kilometer, in the US 35. Understandably the US is more car oriented. Dutch villages and cities almost all exist for at least 500 years and were built gradually and for that reason alone more beautiful than in the US. NYC exists for four hundred years, was bought by the Netherlands in 1624 for some mirrors and beads. Now we want it back, for free ;). I'm sure you can arrange that. Deal?? 🤣🤣🤣
It looks very much like Amersfoort, at least some of the montage.
Nice video... awesome subject.
It's funny that people say Dutch food is bad because the Dutch are the second largest food exporter next to USA in the world. Their food is always fresh and you can even buy it cut the same day in bags. We don't have that abroad. The Dutch food as in stampot may look strange bc it us just mashed potato with veggies but research has shown that it is actually extremely healthy to eat potatoes and vegetables like kale, or carrot with onion or leek/andive. Actually onions but also garlic are good prebiotics. The fermented cheese or dairy products are good probiotics. So be careful calling food bad😉
Remarkable you only interviewed people under 30, was that deliberate? Anyways, nice video.
Thanks! I was at a university, so everyone there was under 30
@@boomdoze Thanks for the context...
I've seen some of your video's since moving to the Netherlands, nice video's and well presented, but I have one question they didn't answer yet, I think.. Health insurance, which is obligatory in the Netherlands, have you tackled that?
Exchange students are not required to take required curriculum... they usually take elective courses and basic math, history and English... their exchange year doesn't count towards their academic standing, it's more of a Gap year... and it pretty easy for anyone.
hey world my mom keep saying that i shouldn't go to netherlands cause she's afraid something would happen to me like some girls were killed god bless their souls so i it safe for someone on there own?
Great to hear from different people from different countries! Have you made some close friends yet or is that difficult?
yeah it was super interesting!! and I honestly had a pretty hard time making friends here but I think that’s because I work from home. I started making a really big effort to meet people and now I have friends. Thanks for asking :)
The Dutch are very critical and independent. However, selfcriticism we lack a lot (as a people and nation).
I grew up near Amersfoort, a great place to grow up.
Man...I'd love to go to a Target or Walmart once. I think I might get lost in it for a few weeks.
Directly on the bike! That's how you win our hearts, lady.
Much respect to you for leaving the US and moving here. That takes courage!
Creditcard usage for stores is quite expensive. And since most Dutch people don't own a creditcard or at least don't use it for regular shopping, the costs for stores outweight the customer service of providing the option. I don't use creditcards because of the high % interest you pay on your purchases, which is zero when you use your debitcard.
My cat says hello!
Tip for Americans facing difficulty paying without cash here in NL: use Revolut
When i think of the US, i always think about how the dating there is nowadays. Like.. what is wrong with a coffee date or when somebody doesn’t earn a lot? You fall for the person, not his/her wallet 😊
Holy smoke...why oh why minimum use "like" 3 times in a sentence..???
Lately quite a few people from or in the US have adopted this overly use of ‘like’. I remember the days when ‘you know what I mean’ was used ad nauseam as well.
Yout country wants to take over Panama Greenland and Canada. They threaten their allies. How MAGA reacts to the wildfires in California is outrageous. American stupidity will bring chaos and bigotry to the world. We will resent you for it.
I know there are a lot of decent US citizens around that just are trying to live their lives and be without sorrows and trouble. I have been to 14 states of the USA and I have hosted also many US born travellers in my own home via Couchsurfing for 16 years. The thing is there are some structural issues the USA have incorporated that now disrupts their daily reality. Too many Americans have NO idea about the world outside of the USA. The fact of being the largest economy in the world is only a benefit for the uber-rich elite and that will not change because education is ridiculously expensive, power is in the hands of the billionaires ( You need to be very rich to be candidate for presidency; Elon Musk is obscenely rich and appointed to governement and legislation is steered by lobbyists). I have seen how many people live on the streets , I have in person heard the sad stories of Healthcare debts and people getting hooked on prescriptions. It is all about the money and employee rights are absolutely very sub par!! The USA has the potential to l

Hahahaha, everyone was so kind to you. No one wanted to offend you with their answer so they really tried to package it nicely for you. Which just proves that being direct does not equal being blunt. I thought it was really cute to see how everyone tried their best to express the answer nicely
The 'American dream' is only valid for corrections.
US is an insane asylum run by crazy people,... And to me a bunch of warmongers who are complicit to genocide....
made it onto youtube💪🏻💪🏻 and for all the normal people, WE LOVE YOU ❤️
I love the Netherlands people it feels like one bloodline
One of my friends is in the interview 🙏
oooh really? they’re all amazing people and I loved getting to talk to them for a bit ☺️
You are an extremely nice person and you have such a gentle and friendly voice. The fact that the Dutch say little with strangers is a tendency throughout northern Europe. This is due to culture not to accost foreign and maintain personal private space. And these alarms are checking alarms because the Netherlands is exposed to flooding -depression.😄
thank you so much 🥹💗 oh and that’s good to know about the flooding here!!
Dont ask only white dutch people, brown and black people are also participant the dutch.
I asked many brown and black dutch people to participate but these were the people who accepted. I agree I would like to see more diverse answers so maybe I will get some others to agree to be in a video in the future.
Do you think they will answer differently? Only 9,2% of Dutch people are migrants. And many of those migrants come from Europe or Turkey. On top of that, selecting by ethnicity is against the law in the Netherlands. According to the law this remark is racist.
For a European, Americans are very egocentric. Through poor primary education, I doubt that they know where the Netherlands is and I do not want to say that they do not even know their states in the US. They believe that the world is the US and nothing more exists.
Americans are batshit crazy, I am afraid I can't make it any more positive
