    This is one of those great self defense weapons that are proprietary to Hapkido and makes me want to learn this style. The other self defensive tool being the cane.

      While some of the spinning and strikes using the string are fairly particular to Hapkido, a lot of the joint manipulations can be tied back to gun-sen techniques and possibly come from one of the foundations of Hapkido: Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu. Gun-sen also had tassels similar to a dan bong but there is no direct tie to them being used for the same reasons.

    Gene Lebell is a legitimate tough as nails Martial Artist & fighter. The fight he had with that legitimate Boxer was much bigger than some knew as the Boxer had brass knuckles underneath his gloves, and Gene was still able to take him down, and choke him out for what would pave been a 200 count if someone bothered to count. Lol

    • @AztecUnshaven
      @AztecUnshaven 9 місяців тому

      No evidence of Brass knuckles whatsoever. The boxer was a past his prime retired journeyman with no Judo experience, and it took Gene over 20 minutes to submit him. The truth isn't as magical as the tall tale.

    Love gene but he wasn't bruces instructor they worked mostly fight scenes together. This is while they worked on green hornet. Gene only started saying he was Bruce's instructor after bruce lee died. But bruce learned more grappling from Japanese judo Olympian and wally Jay. I'm not saying gene and bruce didn't show each other stuff but most it was tstuff for movies and working out together

    The lanyard gives it the ability to be used in a way which is kind of similar to how a nunchaku is used except for without the second stick.Granted it may not be exactly like a nunchuck but this demonstration goes to show that with the dan bong the lanyard doesn't just only have the potential to be simply a passive and inactive part of the instrument which does nothing but aids in retention but it can also be a more active part of the weapon which aids in the wielders offensive capability.

      A corded tahn bong is called a chool bong (literally "string sraff") but referred to as a rope staff. Two sticks is known, in Okinawa, as the noonchawl but is a ssang chul bong in Hangeul/Hangeukmal

    imo - He's a legend of a teacher and a truly nice guy (not to mention his fight history, work in films, martial arts etc etc). In public (especially) he's always having fun and playing up an old school wrestling/hardman character. All those faces and the bravado are just a sincere act which pays homage to the wrestling/hardman personalities of old. I for one love to see it and understand (once he moves up to the great wrestling ring in the sky) the martial community will morn the passing of not just a great man but a bygone era in wrestling/grappling, fighting and the personalities therein. Long live Gene! ;)

    Where can I purchase one of these????

    • @NGMonocrom
      @NGMonocrom 4 роки тому

      I know I'm replying to a 2 year-old comment but szaboinc.com is a good place to check out. They have both Titanium Dan Bongs (outrageously expensive), and ones made from far more reasonably priced synthetic material ($25.oo). Truth is, you could make your own. Length of wood handle bought at any hardware store. Look for diameters of 1-inch. (Though 7/8-inch is okay too). Tape down or clamp the handle onto a solid surface, such as a heavy table or workbench. Take a power drill and put a hole near one end. The lanyard is very easy to find. Look for raw-hide laces wherever shoe-laces are sold. (Check your local large pharmacy-chain stores.) After drilling, cut the handle down to length (12-inches). Simple hand-held saw works fine. And there you go, your very own Dan Bong. Though for $25.oo, having a pretty much indestructible one made from synthetic material sounds like a bargain. Just going to mention, I'm not affiliated with Laci Szabo or his online shop in any way, shape, or form other than as a custom who recently bought a handful of items from his shop.

    Nice.... how long is the cord?

    • @jinokang
      @jinokang 7 років тому

      Depends, on your hand size. It should be customized to fit your hands. For a thumb loop, the stick should be wrapped around once on the back of the hand and the stick should rest perfectly in palm of your hand without any part of the stick protruding out on the bottom of your hand. Good luck!

    • @KaptainCanuck
      @KaptainCanuck 4 роки тому

      As per below but have about 6cm protruding past the hand for major pain compliance.
