Vickers is in a class by himself. He owned it for.many years.. Griffey is excellent. His lyrical approach is more like Pears, whose voice it was written for. Anthony Rolf Johnson best I saw after Vickers. It's such a absolute masterpiece.
restrained but passionate, no one knows the depths of another
The best peter grimes
Well sung.
Fantastic! Does anyone know the name of the following song as well, the one that starts just at the end? :)
"He's mad or drunk"
I haven't seen Grimes in ages, despite being deeply familiar with Britten. Overlooked the Mad Scene the last time I saw at the Met, because as a 16 year old, all I was seeking was loud brass, unappreciative of these moments. For the past month I have been going around singing and annoying the living crap out of everyone with this scene. Vickers is unsurpassed, but this version has a fluidity and passion that no other has.
Lovely job all around.
It’s superb.
Wonderful voice. Beautiful. Thank you!
Nearly perfect. The tempo is exactly right, opening the phrases, giving air and space to allow the words to speak, to transport back to a simpler, more romantic time of unashamed emotion. However, in the first verse, the octave leap on "bright-er" was muscled and the crescendo from mf to f was inelegant. While there are no dynamics indicated a more tender approach fits the words better, more like what was achieved when this same melodic challenge appears in the final verse. Please understand that this is one tiny nit to pick in an otherwise outstanding performance, sweetly beautiful. The final verse is exquisite. I was moved and left with tears in my eyes. Beautifully done.
From where can i get the score for the piece?
Boosey and Hawkes is the publisher.
Not Vickers but excellent himself.
I dream to sing and play this for my husband
Ehhhhh, Gene Puerlings arrangement and performance fits the melody and lyrics better
did you just like your own comment
Odd idiomatically to bring Appalachia into the concert hall, though it's a tradition to do so..as with Spirituals. Tender, sensitive and lovely singing from ADG!
exquisite artistry!
Beautiful!
Well that was beautiful, happy to be the first comment here. Thank you for posting!
Great performance of this piece! Bravo!
Bravo 👏🏼
There is a pretty little article about this Peter Grimes zen.yandex.ru/media/d_gusto/muzykalnyi-orgazm-s-zakrytymi-glazami-5ec6859e26782c1ae6947a3e
Almost John Vickers. Absolutely sensational.
Gorgeous. He is a great artist.
This is honestly a great performance to look at and take inspiration from if you are a music student. The dynamics, his diction, the control when he sings softly, the cutoffs, even up to his posture are absolutely master level. Good stuff!
Such a contrast to Lucrezia. His madness is given such gravitas, while hers is written off as hysteria
You mean Lucia (di Lammermoor), right? I completely agree by the way, this one is so much more psychologically and emotionally profound.
@@peaceblossom8 think she means rape of lucretia
@@flicfan416 Lucretia in "Rape of Lucretia" doesn't really go mad though does she? She's devastated because she was raped and commits suicide, but she doesn't have a "mad scene" like Peter Grimes or Lucia di Lammermoor. Or am I remembering it wrong? It's been ages since I saw it last :(
@@peaceblossom8 "give him this orchid" and the preceding bits are pretty mad scene-ish. i don't know if it's canonically understood as a mad scene but the tropes are there
I don’t know why the Vickers version is so popular. It is quite slow and lags. It’s a crescendo of insanity, something I get from this performance but not Vickers
This is beautiful, well done!
Wonderful. And a fabulous pianist!
Absolutely wonderful. It's great to hear this song from a tenor! Thanks for this beautiful rendition.
Love this song and this guy absolutely nails it!!
This man has so much passion and it has inspired me so much. His voice is so profound to add on top of it. It's a shame he doesn't get more attention on UA-cam.
beautiful
Fantastic performance!!
