Learning My Dogs How To SUP - Koa's Ohana
Welcome to our channel!
In this video, I am learning my dogs how to SUP. I took Koa supping when he was a puppy and around a year old. Maui has not been on a SUP board yet, so I wanted to introduce the SUP board for both like they have not seen it before. So we first started by learning on a deflated paddle board in house, and then inflated paddle board in house, with the paddle and without, without swimming vest and without, also some movement eventually. Then we went on the water for a couple minutes each time and eventually I took Maui on the SUP board for half an hour. I am making sure that they both are completely comfortable before taking them out at the same time, which is now possible with my new sup board! I cannot wait to try that soon. Please enjoy teaching your own dogs and take it slow!

About us!
We are a family of 3 - 2 Mini Aussies and me, Bibi. I am 26 years old and currently a student at Radboud University. We live in The Netherlands. I have loved animals especially dogs since I was little. I started searching for a dog at 21 after struggling with anxiety and depression. Koa came into my life at 22 and he was the best thing to ever happen to me. I don't know what I would do without him.
Koa, red merle male, was born on January 15th, 2020 in the Netherlands, just before Covid-19 started. He is a mama's boy❤️. Loves agility and trick training. He is the best dog I could have asked for as my first dog. He comes with me everywhere and we have already experienced so much together.
Maui, red tri female, was born on June 2nd, 2022 in Budapest, Hungary. She is the perfect addition to our family. I got her with the purpose of breeding her for my kennel Koa's Ohana. She is currently still too young, but we are hoping, if all her health tests are good, to have our first litter in 2025🤞. She loves to play with her toys and we are training for upcoming shows.
Please follow us to learn more about our family and follow our journey. Traveling, doing dog sports, breeding, and enjoying life!

I love your vlogs and also the training videos. By the way thank you again for your advice on taking the breeder Aussie that we were offered after she has her sixth litter. We opted against taking her, as we did not wish to be responsible for any health issues. We are looking into still getting an Aussie, but have not found one yet! Until then... will continue watching your channel and day dream about our future dog!

    please do not recomment Aussies for student life! Most students are being very bussy with school and studying at home they do not have the time to give an Aussie what they need. An Aussie needs a lot of attention, training, exercise and mental stimulation EVERY DAY.

    • @KoasOhana
      @KoasOhana 2 місяці тому

      @paulinebrus7580 I personally was a student with 2 mini Aussies. And for me this was really healthy because I had something to take care of. I am not a student life person and it got me a new community who enjoyed the same things as me. The responsibility and companionship was good for me and I think for ‘some’ people this is beneficial as well. But if you do not want to give up your student life and you cannot take care of a dog then I agree with you that you should not get an aussie, but in general you should not get a dog period if you want to participate in all of student life and don’t have time. But if you do want something different than it is definitely possible. That is all I wanted to show😊. I should also mention that I live in The Netherlands, Europe. And student life looks very different here than in the United States.

    • @paulinebrus7580
      @paulinebrus7580 2 місяці тому

      @@KoasOhana thank you for your response. I read that you mainly talk about what the benefits were for you. Not whether the dogs could get enough time, attention, challenge and training every day. I agree that a dog can be very valuable to a student. However, it is more important to emphasize that a dog gets everything it needs. And that's not just about a pet, a little walk and a bowl of food. Aussies are a working breed and need hours of exercise every day including a lot of mental challenge. That's what they were bred for. I'm glad it was good for you. I hope this was a healthy situation for your dogs too. I see that you love your dogs very much and I assume that you took good care of them during your studies. I just think you have to be careful when recommending Aussies for students. you cannot write here that students should give up their student life. That is not possible. You are a student and have to go to school and study after classes. There is nothing you can do to change that (unless you quit) and it will cost you almost your entire day and usually almost your entire weekend. Even a different breed that needs less exercise would not fit into a student life. It really doesn't matter in which country you live and study. It's demanding and time consuming everywhere.

    • @KoasOhana
      @KoasOhana 2 місяці тому

      @paulinebrus7580 Haha you don’t have to worry about that. My dogs get everything they need. My life is adapted around the dogs, which means working from home so they are not alone too long and I can take them on an afternoon walk. Flexible hours so I can do that. Waking up early to walk them and going to training classes after. And go to competitions on the weekends. We have found a routine that works for both me and the dogs. About the student life part. I meant all the outside activities that comes with university. I went to class and went home to the dogs. And no I did not study all day. My schedule also meant I did not have to go to class every day so I guess my experience with university is vastly different. If I did have the odd day that I needed to be gone all day I had a back-up plan, which I discussed prior to getting my dogs so I knew everything would be all right. I also do not think that you understand my video or the points I made. Because I do not recommend getting an Aussie if the only conformity is that you are a student. It should work on a much deeper level. I definitely do not think that an Aussie will work for everyone. In this video I just wanted to showcase all their beautiful attributes. I also have a video showing 6 reasons why you should definitely not get a mini Aussie: ua-cam.com/video/j62GferUbLA/v-deo.htmlsi=hINVhwCcUjHblHkl

      @@KoasOhana I think I understood your video very well. And I think it's great! I was not trying to be rude or anything. I'm not writing that it's a bad video either ;) I'm just commenting that I don't think it's wise to recommend an Aussie to students. That's the only thing. Just so that young students don't get the idea that an Aussie fits perfectly in a busy student life. Your student days sound very relaxed. Mine and (I think most people's) was very time consuming and demanding. Full days of lectures and a lot of work to do outside of class. Not being home much. So people (students) should really think about how much time they have to walk, sport, train with the dog. To give it what it actualy needs. I attended art academy, for which you make and prepare a lot of assignments outside of class. I had almost no time for anything else and was at school for many hours at a time. Often from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm. Which would not be suitable for life with a working breed. So that's why I'm writing this comment here. So people who would like Aussie's and would love to get one, also think about all of this. Otherwise the dog will soon be the victim of a poorly considered choice. And that would be really sad for both dog and owner.

    • @KoasOhana
      @KoasOhana 2 місяці тому

      I agree with that. If you can and want to spend a lot of time with an Aussie then it could work. If you do not have time and know that you will be gone a lot then you shouldn’t get an Aussie. My life is completely focused on the dogs, it even controlled the job I chose after college. And for some people that is not possible.

    I watched your video on why i shouldn't get this dog, and then this one second, lol. i live in the states on the oregon coast. I am trying to do so much research first. I currently live with my mom and her bf, and i do work 8 hours a day, but my mom and her bf are home before me from work and have different days off. I will eventually get my own house on some land and i think if i get this breed, that is when ill want a second one, since ill be living on my own. I am also 26! my worry is if theyre okay with rain, and kennel training for when everyone is at work at the same time, & because my mom does have a male persian cat who is maybe a year old. I was thinking about this dog because i am trying to get more active myself, i think doing it with a dog would be so much more fun and honestly give me more motivation to get up everyday before work and more on the weekends. I can see myself taking my dog most places with me, I would love to take it for agility classes, but also on walks and hikes, friends houses. My whole family lives in Michigan and I was dreaming about taking it all the way back home even for when i do go visit them. I do have severe asthma and terrible allergies. I can handle my asthma, but i see myself being extra with their coats on keeping brushed and cleaned for my allergies. I am just curious for an opinion from you about my comments on getting this dog, lol. I am enjoying this research a lot, it is a lot of information to retain. These are the most beautiful dogs and I feel so drawn to this type, I normally have a good instict on things, I am just trying to make the best decision i can.

    • @KoasOhana

      I personally also work 8 hours but I do work from home so I can take them on a walk in my break. Also one of my mini’s does not like being home alone for long periods of time. So this works best for us. If they can get their afternoon walk from someone else or a dog walker it could potentially work. But in the beginning they will need a lot more and you may have to take some vacation weeks. Because they cannot handle 8 hours immediately. Kennel training is also possible, but I would definitely find a breeder who already starts kennel training as a puppy. One of my dogs loves the kennel, the other hates it. The latter is also the one who had separation issues so that is possible connected. He only saw the kennel when the went to the vet with a breeder so probably not great memories with that. The do not mind the rain. They do wear raincoats but that is mostly for me. They are allowed on my bed, so I don’t want them to be soaking wet and jump on my bed😂 My dogs do really well with cats. I lived with my parents for the first year of Koa’s life and they had 3 cats. They even cuddled together sometimes. If you correct when they want to herd and just make sure they know how to behave with cats I think it will be okay! You can also ask breeders if they socialize with cats in their home, because that could really be a bonus! I think they are great dogs to travel everywhere with you because they just love being with you. So if you have a solid plan on what to do when you have to work all day, for example wake up early for a good long walk, get a dog walker and go to training classes in the evening. Then I say why not. You know best if this type of dog will work for your lifestyle. 😊

      a working breed should not be in a house alone for 8 hours. They also need way more than just a few little walks! They are bred for running for hours and following commands from the shepherd. In my oppinion no dog should be in a kennel for hours. It's not fair to the dog.

    Hi, I have a question for you...someone we know is an Aussie breeder. She has a female mini who is six, and has had five litters. This person wants to breed her one more time and then asked us if we could adopt her after the final litter. However, we just found out the female is pregnant and was bred with a standard size male. This concerns us as we have heard it is fine to breed a mini male with a standard female, but not the other way around. We don't want to adopt the female if this last litter will be too stressful on her as the pups will be larger and harder for her to carry and birth. Am I justified to have concerns? Also if we adopt her after the pups are weaned we have to agree to spay her. I really appreciate your help on this! Don't really know anyone else to ask.

    • @KoasOhana
      @KoasOhana 2 місяці тому

      Hi! Do you know the sizes of both dogs? For example my female mini is 43 cm and if you have a smaller standard aussie who is for example only 48cm, then I don’t really see an issue. I personally however would not make the choice to breed this combination. For registration purposes but also because I don’t really see the point of the combination. And you are right if it is done it is usually the male who is the MAS and the female who is the standard. Although it is believed to be that the size of the puppies will be determined by the female. But you are definitely justified to have concerns with this breeding. The thing I would personally have more issue with however is the fact that she will have had 6 litters and her age, which means she will have had a litter a year from the age of 1. The rules here are that it is normal to only have 3 litters, maybe 4 if she is really healthy and can really add something to the breed. So 6 litters kind of shocks me🙈 I do believe it is normal for breeders in the USA to spay their females before they leave for retirement or ask the new family to do that. But it is personal preference if you want to have a spayed dog or not. Retirement homes, however, do not really happen where I live. We usually have smaller breeders with less dogs. My dogs are firstly family dogs and after that breeding dogs, which means that they will never leave my home. I think she deserves a great family to spend her time with and if you can give her that then I think you will get a great dog❤️. Good luck with your decision!

    • @KoasOhana
      @KoasOhana 2 місяці тому

      I also want to add. I asked a breeder friend who knows some American breeders as well. She says the size of the male does not matter at birth. So she will not have a more difficult birth. The puppies will just grow bigger after birth. So that should ease that concern! And she also said that the 6 litters is more common in the USA (stills shocks me a little bit😂).

    • @lifeaccordingtocynthia5657
      @lifeaccordingtocynthia5657 2 місяці тому

      Thank you so much! I know the female is 43" but don't know the size of the male. In the photos, he looks very big. Also, the breeder says all the puppies will be standard size and she is selling them for more money because they are standards. I thought you don't know for sure when one parent is a mini and one is standard. We just want to give this sweet little girl a good home, but I have chronic illness and don't want a dog that will have health issues.💕

    So true. I have a mini Aussie that my grandson obtained from a friend who was moving and needed to rehome him. My grandson has his litter mate brother. I am retired and home most of the time, but have a large fenced yard. All of the points you mention, I can see in my pup. He is so smart that he has stopped barking at the neighbors, the mailman, or any family who comes to the house. All others are “announced.” He does follow me from room to room and thankfully because he wants to herd me, he stays behind me. He is very sweet and gentle. He loves car rides and visiting our family. All in all, I am very happy to have him in my life.

    Thank you. I appreciate your matter-of-fact discussion of the MAS’s characteristics, including things one might consider a negative, like (for me) the potential for separation anxiety and excessive barking. To me this is a valuable reminder to select our breeder carefully, and to begin early work on training in these areas with my future puppy. There is a couple in France who have developed a fairly new and comprehensive method for addressing (or better, preventing) separation anxiety. They named it after their rescue dog Frida. Another potentially negative consideration is the MAS’s double coat-with such a luxuriant undercoat there will always be floating hairs on furniture, clothes, floor, etc. With my BC-AuCaD0-Aussie mix, his shedding is managed by regular professional grooming (blowing undercoat out); daily slicker brushing at home; and using a shedding comb during shedding season. Finally, the difficulty of finding a MAS WITH its beautiful tail intact in the U.S. is another potential drawback (that is not at all a fault of the breed). The tail’s usefulness for communication; balance during physical activity; somewhere to tuck a nose when it’s cold out; something to clamp down when feeling threatened, etc. make it clear to me that my dog highly values his beautiful tail-and I do too! Our next dog will most likely be a MAS, but our challenge now is to find a well-bred and well-raised puppy whose tail is intact. 🙁 Again, many thanks for your highly informative videos!! 😊❤

      Thank you❤️! You make some great comments of things people should consider when getting a MAS. And I also get your point about the tails. I love their tails and in most countries in Europe it is actually forbidden to dock tails. Also with other breeds such as the doberman and more. I do think there is a Facebook group called "Aussies WITH tails! -Breeders- Australian Shepherd & Mini American Shepherd" who make a list with breeders who breed with tails in the USA, but I don't know how well-bred and well-raised they are. But you can always take a look there. Also, I know a breeder friend who bought a dog for her program in Europe and the breeder left the tail on for her because docked dogs are also not officially allowed at dog shows here etc.. So you could ask that as well. Good luck with finding a good breeder and thank you for your really great comment!

    Well done. Excellent points! I only wish MAS with tails were more widely available here in the U.S. Your dogs and their long, sweeping tails are beautiful and they clearly have a wonderful home, particularly given your interest in lifelong learning and training. Thanks!

      I am looking at this breed and definitely prefer one with a tail, there are breeders here in the US but harder to find.

    We are getting a mini Aussie through a companionship program very soon, which means we keep and house her for the breeder in-between heats and birthing. What size diaper do you order? We were told to keep some on hand once she is here. Love❤️ your channel so much,! Keep up the good work!🙂

      Congrats on your pup❤️! Maui currently wears a size L and she is 43 cm (16,9”) and around 14kg (30lbs). She got her first heat at around 9 months and she has not really changed sizes for diapers since then. Maui is a bit on the larger size for females so if you expect her to be smaller I would go for an M or even an S (if it going towards toy sizes)

    How do you travel with them? My girl I get at 8 weeks on the 25th her mom is 20 pounds and her dad is 15 so wondering if it’s feasible to just carry her on a plane?

    • @KoasOhana
      @KoasOhana 5 місяців тому

      Hi! Congratulations on your puppy😊! I have personally never flown with them. I have taken them on roadtrips to Spain and Croatia for example, which some were 24 hours of driving. But I live in Europe so I did not have to fly. I also have taken them on buses and trains. My dogs are around 30 pounds so that makes it a bit harder, especially because in Europe we have a lot of rules for dogs in airplanes. But if she is a puppy I definitely think this is possible. Just look at the rules for the airline. They usually have a weight limit, most are around the 8-10kg (17-20.5 lbs) here in Europe. So that should even make it possible for you to travel with her when full grown if she stays within those limits. And they usually have a rule that the dog should fit in a carrier that can fit under the seat. They have special dog carriers that comply with airplane rules. Good luck!

    We also had a MAS. I've had a variety of dogs in my 80 years, and he was the best. So smart! He learned the names of a hundred or so toys. I would hide them around the house. If I wanted to sit quietly for a moment, I could get him some exercise by sending him out to find the toys by name. Of course he did it at top speed. I miss him so much.

    Oh Jesus... don't know how to console the inconsolable. We lost a very precious cat too, 2 weeks ago to a biker who thought it was okay to run over a cat with his bike. It was not just the cat who died that day. Something inside us died too. May Jesus show you a way. Only He can. God bless you and your babies.

      Sorry for your loss as well! He passed away at the age of 2. We have had such bad luck with these cats unfortunatly. And Bob was so sad after Douwe's dead that we decided to get him some cat friends again, those are the other 2 cats you saw. He became himself after that again. So its so sad that Bob also died so young and suddenly.

    I stumbled on this video for some reason and it almost made me cry. We also lost our black and white cat, Barny, last November. He passed away from old age at 16. We got him when he was only 4 weeks old because his mother rejected him and refused to feed him. Since he was a tiny kitten, he had a lot of medical issues which is why his momma wouldn't take care of him. We bottle fed him and he pulled through, giving us a lot of joy through the years. He was stone deaf, one of his many medical issues, but lived a good full life with us. We really miss him and his antics and know what you're going through right now.
