    I just posted my own review for it and was interested afterwards to find out what other reviewers thought of it. Not much reviews for it out there yet, by the way. I liked your assessment and have to say it pretty much mirrored mine. Good start, only little to keep us engaged after the first third. Best wishes for you and your channel 🙂

      Just checked out your review, great job it was a good video!!! Yeah we definitely share a lot of similar opinions on this one. The potential was there for a sharp satire but it never comes together in any way that would have made this worthwhile.

    I just saw this movie and I’m confused about the point of the substance. I thought Demi Moore would be able to live through and experience the same things as her “better self” but that’s not the case at all. They are two different people. They don’t even share the same memories, because it’s clear that Elisabeth and Sue don’t have any idea of what the other is doing while the other one is unconscious. So what does Demi Moore’s character gain from this? This makes the substance completely pointless.

  • @DorianHayen
    @DorianHayen 11 днів тому

    66 minutes into the movie, I packed my stuff and left the cinema. Here’s why (spoilers ahead): In the opening battle scene, it seems that catapults launching oil affect characters differently based on their importance. For non-important characters, the oil bursts into flames, while for main characters, it only burns one person. Roman ships can sail right up to the walls. But in a later scene, there’s a beach with shallow water under those same walls, as the protagonist walks over 50 meters into the sea with the water barely reaching his chest. This means the ships would have been stuck at least 50 meters from the walls. These two scenes contradict each other completely, because it seems that Ridley Scott managed to force nature (land) to completely change based on his needs for the scenes - because nature works like that, it just flips drastically inside 2 hours. There’s no logic, no sense of reality - and the movie is supposed to be set in a realistic world. Roman general Marcus Acacius (Pedro Pascal) rushes into combat, tossing away his helmet while climbing a ladder for no reason - which made me think that general leading the siege is an complete id*ot. This would be instant death, as arrows were being shot from above at soldiers on the ladders. A general throwing away his armor as he rush into a battle? Very believable. Not. Once the Romans breach the walls, they somehow flood into the main square through doors and hallways, despite none of them actually making it down the walls. Yet, they appear by some miraculous teleportation, entering the square from ground-level doors while they’re supposedly still fighting their way down. In a scene where slaves are selected for gladiator training, Macrinus asks the main character, "What is your native language? I speak all of them". This is when I knew the movie was AI-written nonsense. Imagine asking a Japanese person who doesn’t know English, “What is your native language? I speak all of them!” Writing is completely illogical. They wouldn’t understand. Lucius, the protagonist, obviously understands Latin - he responded when called forward - so why ask for his native language!? The scene is pointless. I haven't even wanted to see these stuff, I wanted to enjoy the story, but I couldn't not see these technical mistakes at the very beginning, they were pushed into my face, literally. Ridley Scott should be ashamed on what he made. This is garbage. The movie heavily recycles scenes and ideas from the original, but the story moves so fast that there’s no connection between scenes. It’s like watching a video collage. People who did the movie, don't know how to tell the story. The movie is a pure money grab trying to cash in on the first movie's success. Terrible movie, terrible script, terrible dialogue, terrible story structure. Pointless scenes, pointless movie. I’ll never finish watching this garbage. What a waste of time and money. Stop following online critics and get a real opinion, already downvoted your video.

    By the time this film hit streaming in mid-November 2024, there was so much negativity surrounding it that I honest to God dreaded sitting down to watch it. And I may very well have skipped it entirely if not for a sincere reminder from you that you should never judge art based on others' opinions. That sometimes, it can be worthwhile to watch movies outside one's comfort zone and that just because something isn't 100% successful doesn't mean it wasn't worth experiencing. And while I can't say that I liked or enjoyed it, I can't say that I'll be forgetting it anytime soon. Funny enough, I watched two things this week because of you. The other was "Strange Way of Life" that your channel simply reminded me existed. One of those films, I wished was longer and the other, much, much shorter. Keep up the good work:)

    • @kaneeddy
      @kaneeddy 13 днів тому

      Thank you, that message is something I've always wanted to spread when making content so I am glad that I gave you that push to watch something that might be more divisive. I mean even if it's not for you (which I totally understand with Megalopolis) it is something that you have never really seen and I think it's better to watch a film that swings for the fences and misses than a film that is just safe and mediocre. For me the build up to Megalopolis opened me up to watching Francis Ford Coppola's work for the first time and I am so grateful because after seeing films like: The Godfather 1 and 2, Apocalypse Now, and One from the Heart he has become one of my favourite film makers and I owe that to Megalopolis. I definitely want to cover more of his work in the future, I have a video essay that I am writing the script for about One from the Heart but that might take some time because I like to spend a little more time to make video essay's compared to my normal reviews.

  • @PaperlessWriter
    @PaperlessWriter 16 днів тому

    Thanks for reminding me that this thing existed. When this short film was first announced, I was extremely excited for it. Hawke has been a favorite actor of mine since forever and Pascal had been doing all kinds of interesting work by that point. I knew a short film only playing at film festivals would never show at any theaters near me but I was pretty confident I'd catch up to it eventually. And then I promptly forgot all about it until I ran across your video. There's honestly not much movie to review here. Without credits, it's barely 27 minutes. Because you have already brought up all the relevant points on it (that I agree with 100%), I don't think I have anything to add, except to say I liked it and found it frustrating that the story ended so suddenly. Maybe Almodóvar couldn't get funding for a full-length feature because the subject matter was just too similar to "Brokeback?" I also imagine that many film companies weren't crazy about the subject matter. The main thing I came here to mention was that Almodóvar had filmed another short film, this time during the pandemic called "The Human Voice" with Tilda Swinton. I'll be watching that soon. Great review, as always. Keep up the good work:)

    • @kaneeddy
      @kaneeddy 11 днів тому

      I hadn’t heard of that other short I might check that out thank you for bringing that to my attention haha. It was a strange one for me this film because I was really engaged in this and I would have loved to have seen this as a feature. I hope one day that would become a reality but that is highly unlikely. As I think I said in the review (it’s been a while haha) it’s a really exciting first act and I definitely agree that it is frustrating that we couldn’t see this story come to a natural conclusion. Also watching this just by itself would be interesting, I could forgive this a little more because I saw this before a screening of Anatomy of a Fall at last years Brisbane International Film Festival and it served as a good appetiser which is the lens which I saw this movie. Always a pleasure to chat with you!!

    Great review. A different man was a good time. The second half definitely picks up, and the movie gains focus. I felt all over the place in the first half, even though I was enjoying it. I kinda wish we got to take away what Edward learned from the experience.

    • @kaneeddy
      @kaneeddy 16 днів тому

      Definitely agree with you here about the flow of the film and how it gained focus in the second half. I thought the ending did give us a lot to interpret with his facial expressions and the last few lines of dialogue. SPOILERS AHEAD: My interpretation is that Edward is still frustrated with how the life he thought he sacrificed so much for was taken away from him. The line about how he has never changed cemented to me the key theme of the movie about how there is so much more to a person than their appearance because Edward never understood how superficial these things were and how he could’ve thrived with the disfigurement. The tragedy for me is that I don’t think Edward still understands that and will live with this bitterness. I feel like the film does a fantastic job of putting us into Edward’s shoes because I felt that frustration at these scenarios too which is a testament to the cleverness of the movie as a whole.

      I thought at first 2024 was a weak year for movies but as you dive further into some of the releases it has actually been a solid year for me. I don't usually check out reviews before I see the movie either as I just want to form my own opinion. I have liked plenty of movies that have flopped too. I've always believed that film as an art form is completely subjective so you are perfectly well within your right to like a film that flopped or dislike a film that succeeded. We have all done that including myself and there is nothing wrong with that.

    Can't say I'll be rushing to see this anytime soon. To your knowledge, has Pedro ever explained *why* he chose to film this in English?

    • @kaneeddy
      @kaneeddy 11 днів тому

      Yeah it definitely wasn’t for me but I also do have to say as a word of caution I’ve struggled with some of Almodovar’s work in the limited amount I have actually seen. Now that you ask that I’m kicking myself I didn’t include something about that in this video haha. Forgive me when it comes to festival content I’m usually pretty exhausted because my schedule is so busy. But from what I’ve seen it’s just something that Almodovar has wanted to do for a while and was testing himself with those two short films he made before he jumped into a feature. To me though there is a lot of work to be done. Some film makers can do a good job with their second language. Bong Joon-Ho is a great example of this but Pedro might need some more practice to make something truly compelling and interesting when writing not in his primary language.

    The consesus i keep hearing it has a lot of great elements but the script is messy. I feel a lot of other films are going to keep this out of the best picture race

    • @kaneeddy
      @kaneeddy Місяць тому

      I think the screenplay is definitely messy especially after the 1st act. However there is a lot of undeniable passion behind this movie. I can see a clear package where this gets nominated for best picture but I don’t see it winning + there has been a trend lately where we see at least 1 international film get in to best picture and right now Emilia Perez to me feels like that movie especially if Netflix pushes this movie for nominations.

    Jesus, this film... Amazing. Mesmerizing. Frequently made me crumble like a wet piece of paper. Having just completed it 12 hours ago, I need to consider it a while longer before dipping my toe into any discussion. But yeah, mark me down under the "Loved It" column:) The past should be lived with, and not *in*.

      The more I think about the film's final revelation, the more lost I feel. That ending kind of tainted the positive emotional transparency and honesty that permeated the movie's first 2/3's. Not really ready to dive into the in this case cheap-feeling "ending explained" videos but maybe I'll rewatch your review to try to get a handle on it. Don't know what feelings I'm supposed to be walking away with, honestly

    This movie wasn’t disturbing at all. After watching a few reviews I went into this expecting to be grossed out beyond measure. Instead, I found myself laughing (a lot) towards the end. This movie really did not need that final act. It could’ve wrapped up before that and been a much better movie overall. The last act is just comically bad on so many levels. One saving grace is that it did remind me of The Thing which is one of my all time favorite horror movies.

      No no no no .. final act is absolutely essential. I agree with the laughing part .. I did not expect so much really funny scenes 😅

    I'm surprised you took it as a hit piece. Much of what was in the film seems to goover (and neatly compile) stories about Trump that have been going around for ages. That's like saying a movie about Henry Fors that mentions that he wrote the introduvtion to the U.S. printing of Mein Kampf ....or a Steve Jobs bio that mentions how he cheated Woz when he sold Woz's Breakout Game to his employers at Atari (he didn't steal it, but allegedly lied about how much they were paying for it so Woz got chump change while Jobs pocketred the bulk of the fee). These are non-flattering, but long circulated about ....less than flattering.... moments in the stories of their subjects. I felt htat all the "unflattering" Trump stories were similar longtime tales. Including the ....Ivana scene.... (which I could have done without). I read it was based on divorce cherges - which she later retracted (I won't speculate as to whicvh version was "true"). It did seem a bit gratuitous and I don't think it would have changed the movie if it were left on the cutting room floor. I found it an interesting character study of someone with ambition to achieve power who was not troubled much - if at all - with self-reflection. That description could go for nearly ALL our 'captains of industry', so I did NOT view the film as a 'hitpiece'. Then again, I didn't really learn anything new about DJT OR Roy Cohn. But I enjoyed the film.

      I didn’t take it as a hit piece, I can see how someone would see it as one but I personally didn’t feel that. I saw the movie in a similar fashion to what you wrote down, the rise of a businessman and seeing how money can bring out things in people you wouldn’t normally see. I would’ve preferred that Ivana scene to be left on the cutting room floor personally. I just don’t think the movie is entirely unbiased which once again I don’t have an issue with but it becomes an error when the director claims to have gone for an unbiased take. I like the movie and what it achieved and the performances were amazing.

    I agree that the ending did not give me what I was looking for. My adult daughter and friends saw it then we saw it together. I only say that because most of the movie's basis was already provided. She's a huge spoiler, but I didn't mind. Much of it I watched with an upset stomach. It was definitely a trigger. I am also 1 of many. With that said, if forgetting was the theme, understand most women never forget. IDid Not.
