In the Long Run
A rough demo of an original (I hope) tune which may yet be a song; the minor key part will have an as-yet-to-be-composed melody over it. Played on amplified acoustic guitar tuned DADEAE. Random photos of scenery here in Kerry.

Amala: The Yellow Room
Переглядів 80Рік тому
Live recording by Amala (Reidun Schlesinger, harp, and Paul de Grae, guitar) of one of Paul's compositions, with improvised solos, recorded (on a single mic) for JJ O'Shea's radio show, "The Music Tree", 25 June 2023. The walls of Paul's music room are yellow, hence the title; sadly, that's not it in the photo.
Amala: The Dunnock's March

Live recording by Amala (Reidun Schlesinger, harp, and Paul de Grae, guitar) of Paul's tune, recorded (on a single mic) for JJ O'Shea's radio show "The Music Tree", 25 June 2023. The dunnock is a small, shy, unobtrusive bird, quite handsome if you get a good look (photo from Birdwatch Ireland).

Another work-in-progress. This version of the 1930 song by Hoagy Carmichael and Stuart Gorrell ((c) Peermusic III Ltd.) is based on the arrangement by Jeff Arnold in the book "All-Time Standards", published by Hal Leonard, (c) 2006 by Peermusic III Ltd. I've tweaked it a bit, and added an intro and vamp chord passage (to use for practicing solos). Guitar is a late ‘60s or early ‘70s Hofner 4574.
The Lark in the Mist

Another take on this medley of the traditional Irish air, "The Lark in the Clear Air", and Erroll Garner's "Misty". Still needs some work... Played in drop-D. Guitar is a late ‘60s or early ‘70s Hofner 4574.

A slow air learned from the accordion playing of Jackie Daly. It's the air of a song by the great Munster poet Eoghan Rua Ó Súilleabháin (1748-1784). Played on amplified Martin M-38 guitar, tuned DADEAE. Accompanied by some random views of Kerry scenery.
The Pickpocket and The Visiting Hare (slip jigs)

I wanted another slip jig as a companion piece for “The Visiting Hare”, which I shared here a while ago. Out of the blue, some ideas popped up this afternoon, so I had to make this rough demo before I’d forget. “The Pickpocket” is not a person, it’s the little pocket in my jeans where I put my pick (thanks to Reidun Harpist for this useful usage). Guitar tuned DADEAE, capo V.
Sir Sidney Smith's March
Переглядів 159Рік тому
Composed by James Hook (the man in the first image) in honour of Sir Sidney Smith (the second image). Hook (1746-1827) was from Norwich, a successful composer and organist in his day, not so well remembered nowadays. Sir Sidney Smith (1764-1840) was an English naval officer, acclaimed as a hero for thwarting Napoleon's plans in the Middle East. This tune became popular with Northumbrian pipers,...

Amala (Reidun Harpist and I) had some fun with this tune. It's a JJ O'Shea melody which he asked us to play for a radio documentary. Originally a fairly normal 4/4 tune (as in the first part of the video), we tweaked it into 5/4, and then went about adding beats here and subtracting them there, to make it more interesting and fun to play. Sound engineer: Tony O'Flaherty. Hope you like it!

An unusual piece by Irish harp composer Turlough Carolan (1670-1738). I've taken some liberties with this arrangement, filling in some of the gaps in the original phrasing without (I hope) taking away from its curious, inquisitive vibe. Guitar tuned DADEAE, capo 3. Photos are mine: the frozen contents of a bird bath; a skyline near here; back door detail; and moon-gazing hare figures.
The Meal Bridge (hornpipe)
Переглядів 752 роки тому
Another simple little tune that "wrote itself". The bridge in question is a field away from here, down by the shore, and is one of the locations where emergency relief of "Indian meal" (maize) was distributed during the Famine. Locally it's pronounced "mail bridge". (Composed by Paul de Grae, September 2022)
The Yellow Room

The sort of little tune you end up "composing" when trying to remember another one. The music room I work in has yellow walls; that's not it in the picture. (Composed by Paul de Grae, September 2022)

Róise na nAmhrán, Arranmore, Donegal sings the song on a CD . Beautiful air.
This is one of my favorite songs! Funny thing, it became a favorite before I knew the story behind it. Guess she perfectly captured the essence of an assemblage artist, because I fell in love with the song as I was leaving behind pretty much my whole Midwest life, with a trailer loaded not with the practicalities of life, but a few bits of vintage furniture and all the materials to finally start making the assemblage art I wanted to, in my new life out west. When I later read the story behind the song it felt like such an affirmation of that choice.
@@briarwoodimp Fascinating story; thank you for sharing it.
That's a big sound, love it.
Thanks, Alan!
So nice ❤
Thank you!
Nice tune!
Lovely tunes!
Wonderful improv Paul!
Absolutely perfect!!
We're facing a possible serious moment in our lives here, and this beautiful music is a balm. Thank you.
Nice playing!
Thanks!
57 esque headstock like my accoustic, Unplugged?
are they 11s (heavy strings?)
Strings are D’Addario XL Chrome flat-wound, 11-50, ECG24. Not unplugged, but not the ideal amplified sound either: I’m still experimenting with pickup and amp settings (electric playing is not my speciality).
@@pdg119 I play 11's too, that would sound lovely through my RV6 Boss and Fender Deluxe jazz re-issue
lovely sound
Thanks!
Wow! What a cool Hofner! Great cover of one of my all-time favorites. Thanks
Thank you! Like its owner, that guitar is in need of a makeover, but it’s a nice one to play.
Sounds lovely. Can I ask the guitar make/model please?
Thank you. It’s a 1961 Hofner Verithin. Added later: according to the experts on the Hofner Guitars FB page, it’s actually a Hofner 4574 from late ‘60s or early’70s.
Yes, Hofner Verithin from 1961: like myself, in need of restoration! Correction: according to the experts on the Hofner Guitars FB page, it’s actually a late ‘60s or early ‘70s Hofner 4574.
A Hofner ?
Lovely stuff, Paul!
Thanks, Matthew!
Really lovely
Thank you! Cheers!
Thanks, Philip!
Very nice Paul.should make into the well loved list.
Thanks, Philip!
Lovely!
Beautiful
bravo ! merci !
Lovely. I can imagine Paul Brady singing it - his voice would love the high notes and they him. Worth the work to find the words I think.

Sounds good
Thanks, Jake! Hoping for better sound on our next video...
Fantastic version, both of you. May I ask who mixed and mastered?
Most of the album, including that track, was recorded & mixed by the wonderful Garry Ó Briain in his studio in County Clare. Mastering by Mark A. Johnson in Illinois.
wow awesome playing
And who was that shadow there by the gate? Who was that there standing guard? It was only loneliness and loneliness waits And ideas are like stars
Great Fiddler, if anyone has a copy of this album please let me know. You can find me on facebook, Gary Matthewson
Lovely!
Thanks! :-)
beautiful
Thanks! :-)
toll! Gefällt mir sehr gut :D
Danke für die netten Wort, Monika! :-)
Thanks for posting. Brilliant. My grandfather went to school in Ballyduff Lower Co. Waterford with Jimmy Power. He spoke fondly of him as 'Jimmy Babby'. He told us Jimmy came to visit him in Tramore when he was home from London. My grandad played fiddle too and learned fiddle as a child in school from a visiting violin teacher from Germany.
Great music. You sound wonderful.
TwoHarps Thank you! :-)
a first live recording, without any editing, and improvised bits in the middle ...
11 is better than 10. This sounds great!
Jimmy Power good to hear him. Thanks
Beautiful playing
Not a song I have heard before. Thanks. I love his laconic delivery.
This recording haunts me. I also like Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh's singing version but this is the one I love.
Have to learn these derned tunes!
