Obrien must have felt "safer" than Garak to the showrunners, but it was a let-down bromance replacement for the fans. The Garak and Bashir relationship was brimming with chemistry and pseudo-sexual innuendo.

The fact that we have 5 minutes without a shred of Garak really does speak to how much Bashir is a disaster Bi. And, honestly, I can't help but imagine Julian years and years later with Ezri and Garak. After all, Garak is flexible, and has matured to recognize that perfect is the enemy of good, and Ezri is a Trill, and given the presence of bonded Trill, like herself, there has to be some allowance for complex emotional and romantic dynamics.
