More Wiring Woes and Sensitive Sensors 1998 Jeep Cherokee XJ
Saints,
Today we dig into my dad's 1998 XJ, and why it was getting inconsistent stalling/skipping/jolt and random crank no starts. The end result was a wire grounding out on the fuel rail towards the rear of the block, we taped the wire and loom back up. Then zip tied the loom where it could not touch the fuel rail again. This video was made more so for reference and an example of how to probe the wiring when you've eliminated the sensors and computer from being the problem, though I would say the wiring should be the first thing you should inspect, because if it isn't good, no (good, failing, or bad) sensor or computer/PCM will run it, so reassure yourself that the wiring is mint first, it's easy once you see how I did it, if you can wrap your mind around my thinking.. After we fixed this wire, the Jeep runs like a scolded dog.
Hope this helps,
God Bless,
YourFriendStChris

    I hear where you're coming from on electrical issues in old vehicles. All these sensors and associated wiring are great and serve useful functions when they're new and fully operational. But things tend to break down as they get older and the complicated wiring pathways sure make it much more difficult to locate the trouble spot. I've got a 30-year-old Explorer. It has been very dependable overall, but evey once in awhile it momentarily falters out on the highway. I wonder if it could be a bad sensor or wiring, but I suspect maybe the fuel pump going out. I replaced it maybe four years ago. At least if it is that, I cut a hole through the floor under the back seat and patched it back with sheet metal and sealed it up so it is fairly easy access without dropping the gastank.😊

      @YourFriendStChris 11 днів тому

      Just check your wires. Like my situation, one of the two powered leads could be going to ground, or the 5v reference can be weak and the sensor is barely getting the power it needs.

      Really the history I know.. the first recorded ownership of the land was in 1856 to a Jesse Criddle, apart of 320 acre plot. Then Dr Fred Kneibert was born in 1903, and acquired it in his lifetime, the Mark Twain Heritage team thinks the homestead was build in the 1930s, so that would align with Dr Kneibert's age of going to school and ending back in Poplar Bluff area in 1928 to take on Brandon Hospital, and get married in September of the same year. He owned the property up until the 1968 when the USFS acquired the land, not sure why/how they acquired it.

    • @YourFriendStChris
      @YourFriendStChris 4 місяці тому

      @@jeremysales1232 not simply put, from the guy that has owned this one for a decade, early on I cleaned and painted the undercarriage of my jeep with Rust reformer and then flat black rustoleum on top of that, and it has held up great, the one thing I didn't do was the inner rockers, and a north east snowstorm was the beginning of them rusting out, I repaired and replaced what needed to be done and then I treated the rest of them by cleaning them out and putting a fresh coat of POR15 where I could, but I've also witnessed POR 15 fail because it is not UV rated, and it will peel with time. Granted, spray paint will fade with time if it is exposed to wind and loose terrain or dust, but on the inside of the rocker, this is less of an issue for both the POR 15 and the spray paint, but both work if you're Rust hasn't reached flaking off stages and my rockers were still in good shape elsewhere that I left, so it should do the trick for the next decade, after that this XJ will probably get turned into the next version of itself, and the rockers will probably be gone. My question to you is how do you get POR 15 into the inside of a rocker that still closed, can it be sprayed in a similar fashion?

    This footage brings back memories for me from about 15 years ago. We were staying at the Comfort Suites by Delmonico's. Rolled into Cape after 3 hour drive and decided to wait to get cheaper gas at Jackson. Bad fuel gauge, but I *thought* I had enough. Got to the stoplight going to the motel and ran out of gas! Walked family to motel and checked in. Walked to Walmart, got ride part of the way. Bought gas can. Walked back in rain to Rhodes and bought gas. No one stopped to offer a ride on way back. Cops had shown up just when I got back. Put gas in van. Took hungry kids to Huddle House by Walmart to feed them. Needless to say, I slept well that night.

After finding that it was losing spark I purchased a cheap Chinese CPS off eBay for $20 Aus. That did the same thing but only after 3 km! Decided to buy a Goss brand CPS for $170 (probably same quality as the 'Standard' brand you used) which worked and is now running fine. Access to the CPS is difficult. From the top was impossible, from below I used several 3/8" socket extensions totalling 250mm and a wobble joint with a wrap of duct tape to hold it out. When reinstalling tape the bolt into the socket so it doesn't fall out until the threads have started. I reckon I could swap one in 30 minutes now.

      Another spot to look up for your location, would be Land Between the Lakes, and the offroading area within LBL, Turkey Bay OHV park. OnX Offroad App, has all my documented trails for all the area I have mentioned in these two comments, well worth the $35 a year to see where you can go and what you can expect out there. I try to give really good details on what I put in the app! Let me know if you have any other questions.

    Thanks for showing us the trail numbers and where you go, I'm new to overlanding and been to the glade top a couple times and it really helps knowing what the trail looks like and where they are.

      No problem! I've documented most of the trails I know in the OnX Offroad app, if you want to see more, check it out here: onxoffroad.app.link/7oOfxouNWEb I've documented a lot in SEMO. Coming back to Glade Top on Saturday.

    Hi Kris thanks for the advice, I bought the dmc micro for my volante and work amazing… can you use the dmc just for the volante o more pedal at the same time?.

      I actually have more videos on it if you search my channel. I made it work with a Wampler Terraform at the same time. Now I'm trying to figure out how the get the new Beta update to work with both pedals again. it's a little less functional at this point, but I'll figure it out!

    I did this trail in my 2005 F150 and 80% of it was done in 2wd.

    The fuel pressure is dropping because the one way return valve is failing. It’s no big deal, mine has been like that for 3 years 😂

    FYI there is a fire tower close to Simpson, IL that you can still climb. It's called Trigg Tower.

      Oh yes! Over by Garden of the Gods? Well it's probably like 10 miles to the west of there, but none the less close..

      I've found like 5 of them over here in Missouri that you can still climb to the top, including this one.. ua-cam.com/video/9bXZJKMShTk/v-deo.htmlsi=wuyV82MEQhJ8vTpo

    Just found your channel researching for a weekend trip to Mark Twain National Park. I am building a 96 XJ overland build and just getting started off-roading/overlanding. Hopefully a 3 in lift and 30 in tires will get me through the trails in the area, as you seemed to not have any troubles.

      I'm on 2.25" in the front, sway bar disconnected with the JKS ACOS coil over system and some hockey puck bump stops, rear is just shackled and add a leafed up to 2-2.5", with 30.6" tires, and it does great in Mark Twain NF.

    It turned out fantastic! It probably wouldnt have hurt to shot some primer on the bondo area. Either way it looks good!

      from all the videos I saw no one seemed to worry about much more than cleaning it, so I just went the same route. What primer would be best?

      Yep, last year, it was a part year of distributor and then coil. Mine is a early 99, built in 8/98.
