MEET THE HOST: Kevin Donahue
Husband. Father. Backpacker. Pilgrim. Author.
Kevin Donahue began walking pilgrimage routes in 2019, joining the historical footprints of pilgrims seeking places and people to inspire questions and enlighten answers about faith, hope, and love. His passion for these historic footpaths and reflections from the journeys form the basis for his books: Sacred Steps: A Pilgrimage Journal and The Pilgrims’ Table.
BOOKS BY KEVIN DONAHUE:
Sacred Steps: A Pilgrimage Journal | www.sacredstepsbook.com
At the crossroads of history and faith, a reluctant pilgrim embarks on a modern pilgrimage along some of the world’s most revered footpaths. Along the way, he discovers the places and encounters people that inspire questions and enlighten answers about faith, hope, and love.
Available from print and digital booksellers, Sacred Steps: A Pilgrimage Journal conveys both the historical context and the modern experience of pilgrimage through Portugal and Spain on the Camino de Santiago, along America’s Pacific Coast connecting the California Missions Trail, across receding tides to Holy Island, from London to Canterbury along Britain’s historic Pilgims’ Way, and onward towards Rome via Europe’s Via Francigena on a journey of discovery.
The Pilgrims’ Table | www.thepilgimstable.com
Brought together by fate for a memorable dinner, five pilgrims recall their emotional journeys along Spain’s Camino de Santiago. Powerful and moving, The Pilgrims’ Table is an emotional look at the transformational power of pilgrimage.
Born from the intersection of my experiences with those of other pilgrims, The Pilgims’ Table is the story of five pilgrims from divergent paths who come together at a Spanish albergue. The deeply personal stories shared over dinner transform their outlook on pilgrimage and connect them as one pilgrim family.

Walking? All 600 miles of it? From San Diego to Sonoma? !
What country dollars are you referring to?
She has a very strange idea about what constitutes completing a Camino It's quite clear that her claim to have done ten Caminos is bunkum. Doing a section or arriving off a plane just in time to rush to the cathedral is not completing a Camino. As a genuine Camino veteran of eleven full Caminos starting in 2007(plus in August/September I will be walking the Frances again), I get annoyed with people making false claims.
Such a great idea! Was looking for how to pack my poles for a weeklong trek in Scotland and this is the perfect solution. The goals was a solution I can recycle upon arrival and a one that’s replicable on the way home. Thank you! 🙏🏻
Does this work in December weather? Planning to walk then
What size blanket twin or full?
Amazing, how demanding must have been especially when you had no apparent food supply maybe for days in remoteness. 🙏
Starts at 30:00
Beautifull conversation :) Bravo.
Why are you covering g your mouth by your mike. Some people not hearing well reading lips can help.
Padre Johannes, seguo i suoi video su yutube in quell'eremo sulle Alpi Piemontesi.
Can you recommend a liner sock that is ankle or no show? I don't want to wear socks that go all the way up to my knees.
Introduction is too long.
Okay so I am 7 month before my camino. I only walk the last 114km. My training evry Saturday 10-15km and on weekdays times 30 min till 60 min walks. Guess I should do good😂
I enjoy your you tube channel, thank you
I love that Fr Johannes has a photo of Don Camillo and Mayor Peppone on his wall. 🥰
Great interview, great story! What an inspiration!
A ghiro is an European fat dormouse (Glis glis). For me it's a reminder to live a quiet life in winter. And to leave people alone in summer, which they don't if they smell food or find objects to play with.
What is the name of the Facebook group for walking the california missions? I could not locate the group.
California Mission Walkers. It's kind of awkward getting approved. 🌞
Dear Father, what you have to say and share is very important to people everywhere. We need more voices like yours. I try, through my little blog, but it is not enough.
Johannes, if you are looking for a good English publisher who publishes quirky books try Batsford Books in London. I’ve recommended you already to the owner Poppy Powell. You may be ideal for their publishing house. Seguo il tuo vicino Martino ogni settimana e sono contento che anche tu hai preso questa mania di vivere sperduto in mezzo e di fare i video della tua esperienza. Tanti auguri per un felicissimo anno nuovo. As they say in Scotland where I live- Lang may yer lum reek! David
Extremely surprise to see such strenght given and consacrated to God and prayers. I personally do little walks in the mountains and the purity of the air and sound of the wind makes it easier to pray. You actually SEE the beauty of TRUTH.
I’ve been walking 10,000 steps everyday for 6 months. Yesterday I walked 20km in four ish hours. Mmmm…not great today but not terrible either. I’m going to follow your plan now. Yesterday certainly gave me some confidence and I walked one half of one stretch then turned round and walked back to where I’d parked my car (if the makes sense). I did not drink water every hour so I need to be careful to do that. I was carrying a pack pack with 2/3 of what I’m going to take. Anyhow, better I listen to you now. Thank you for your channel.
@SacredSteps, question, i'm going on camino next spring...starting from my home in Belgium. I was planning to take a lightweight down sleeping bag (a little over 500 grams) because i start on 16th of march so it might get quite cold still. Would you still rather recommend a down blanket ? Thanks in advance for you r answer 🙏😊
I would like to walk the Camino Frances, with planned rest days staying more than one night in certain towns, but I would like to finish in 3 weeks. Is it possible to take a bus from town to town in certain areas to save time?
I am planning to walk the Frances route starting the last week of June. First timer. I am 58, fairly fit, I think I can walk about 12-15 miles a day. I'm would like to finish around mid-July, a little later is ok, and allow plenty of time to linger a day or more in any town I find particularly charming or if I just need a rest day. What is a good starting point? And what is the ground transportation like to get to starting point?
The Poles aren´t alowed inside the backpack that you take with you inside the plane?
Technically no. Its the stupidest thing as canes and crutches are just fine as if those theoretically couldn’t be used as weapons also…
great video!!!
I use generic antiperspirant
C’mon you’re Catholic - just because you found us through scripture rather than tradition makes no difference😉
por que NO HAY TRADUCCIÓN AL ESPAÑOL.
Thanks for sharing! Planning on going with my 11 year old next summer. I have a question about restrooms. When nature calls where do you go? What is the normal acceptable practice?
Larger cities do have public restrooms, but most towns and villages do not have facilities along the Camino. The majority of restroom breaks will be at cafes, bars, and restaurants, which make facilities available to paying customers. Purchase a water/coffee/snack and use the facilities. In natural areas, you may need to use the restroom in the forest, but be sure to pack any tissues into a zipper bag to disclose of later rather than leaving tissues in the wilderness. Buen Camino!
There was no loo facilites on the official stretch I walked along yesterday. (Portugal) So yes, in the long grass for me.
Great video. Is there any pros or cons in starting early August vs mid or late Aug for Camino Frances in Saint Jean and completing in 40ish days? Thank you.
Not at all. Those two weeks don’t see a huge variation in weather patterns, unlike starting in early vs. mid-October. 40 days is a great Camino with at least one rest day per week.
August... Tell me about what to expect?
It’s really going to vary on the six Camino routes, but generally August is going to be one of the warmest times of the year.
This is a great idea. I used a tube like this on my trip to Paris on the way to the Camino Frances last year. I was allowed to carry them on the plane on the way over. However, I didn't keep the tube and tried to just pack the poles in my backpack. They were confiscated at the airport in Madrid on my way home. I should have checked my backpack going home but wanted to carry it onboard. It was an expensive loss. Probably would have been easy to pick up a tube in Madrid.
You can often find cardboard tubes at business centers at or near the airport, especially the international hubs. I’m sorry you lost your poles! Thanks for subscribing! Buen Camino!
The problem with down is that bed bugs love it and it's impossible to dry
Permethrin 👍🏻👍🏻
Is the documentary still available? None of the links are working
The documentary is available at Fr. Johannes's website linked in the show notes: www.4kmh.com/
That laundry system is GENIUS!
Thanks for the kind words and for subscribing to the channel. Buen Camino!
I first learned of The Camino back in the late 90s from reading Shirley MacLaine’s book about her experiences of her walking the Camino. Then a decade later I watched The Way starring Martin Sheen and Emilio Estevez.
Wonderful storytelling in both! If you haven't read it, I recommend Claude Tranchant's Boots to Bliss as well! Thank you for subscribing! Buen Camino!
How about an ultralight quilt? Any advise on those?
I use an ultralight quilt from Enlighted Equipment for my backcountry hikes, but it is too much for the Camino (rated 20* F). You only need a light down for Camino - 650 fill weight. The down camping blankets fit the bill at a fraction of the price.
@@SacredSteps terrific advice, cheers
good film
Buen Camino!
Thnaks for this video. I am comtemplating going on the Camino in October, probably the Ignatian Camino, so this option sounds very good to me. I went on the Camino in January 2015, 2016, and 2017. A sleeping bag was great in those months, but it was also the heaviest thing I had in my backpack. I love the solitude of the Camino in winter.
If you go in October, Fr, take a down comforter at 800 fill weight. It will weigh about 1.5 pounds but keep you warm to 30 degrees. The 650 blankets are really just ideal to 55 degrees. Of course you could wear your puffy in bed! 😆 Buen Camino!
Father Johannes is living the full life and we are the beneficiaries of that. Bless you sir.
Well said! Buen Camino!
Hi, I suppose you would combine it with a liner?
Great question. These combine nicely with a liner, but can also work as a top sheet / comforter. Buen Camino!
I used a sleep liner between May and June, it was perfect for me.
That’s a great option for the warmer months. I wouldn’t push that for spring or fall, but it definitely can work. Buen Camino!
What an outstanding job, Kevin! Thank you for allowing us to share our story and our shared passions! We look forward to watching you on the Camino Portuguese this summer as we walk the Camino Frances again! Buen Camino!! - Michelle & Brian
What a pleasure to have you on the podcast, Brian & Michelle. We can't wait to follow alongside you virtually and connect again soon! Buen Camino!
I expect this training plan is done to suit people who work 5 days a week but it seems a lot on the low end, also upper body strength to deal with a backpack should maybe considered. I'm going on the Camino in June and started training yesterday in serious fashion. I did 24km. It took 6hr 15min with 3 short breaks in new shoes. I'm very overweight but I now know how hard it feels (early) to do a day's trek, blisters and all. As I live in a flat country, the use of stairs is a great way to train and if you use Komoot for trekking you can see the incline gains and distances and compute a number of flights of stairs and times required to simulate the effort. You cannot compute wind, rain and temperature though 😄 I also liked the advice that time is not a major factor as you have approx 12-15 hours to do your trek in a summer day anyway. Being last is not a position, and rather it may be being first in the enjoyment of the journey and geography. For me, losing weight will be critical as the more weight you have on your body and pack, the more pressure on hips, back, knees and feet.
Thanks for the feedback. The advice is not targeted to any one demographic, rather taking from my experience of walking in England, Scotland, Portugal, Spain, Italy, and across the USA. The training that needs to be done is incremental strength for the soles of you feet, your quads, and back. If you build strength methodically you will be well-prepared for the day-to-day of walking 10-20 miles for pilgrimage. If you live in a flat area, a great tip is to walk up and down parking garage (car park) ramps. And while I really don't suggest anyone begin with 24k, you must be really proud of that big first day. Learn what works best for you and take it slow. Thank you for subscribing! Buen Camino!
Once again, another great interview. Thank you for your efforts to connect pilgrims in this wonderful format.
Thanks for listening. I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Buen Camino!
The World needs more programs like this one for Veterans! I recently found out about this organization and am reading his book at the moment. Brad Genereux is an outstanding example of Veterans helping Veterans! Buen Camino!
I couldn't agree more! Buen Camino!
This is amaaazing! I’m leaving for my Camino Frances april 13. Came across this and when I read the title - tears poured down my face. I’m so there, so ready and somehow know I’ll never want to leave! Thank you!
What a lovely comment! Buen Camino!
