500C cylinder rebuilds | Hook Lock retaining ring Hydraulic Cylinders
Initially getting these cylinders to come apart was a process, but then once I learned there was a hook lock ring that had to be removed prior to disassembly, everything came apart as intended.

    What is the difference between 450B and 450D steering clutches I have a 450D don't want to turn or push. Any advice would be appreciated

    • @GAVINCANFIELD
      @GAVINCANFIELD 24 дні тому

      @leonvandervyver8053 I believe the 450c and newer have "Wet Clutches" instead of dry clutches. This means oils don't mess up the friction discs but instead act as a lubricate like in an automatic transmission. The clutches still can wear out but they usually hold up way better than the dry clutches. I would recommend checking the clutches and brake bands for proper adjustment, if the adjustment is maxed out and you still do not get any better results I would say it is time for a rebuild. When you drain the oil from the clutch housing pay attention to see if water comes out. It should drain out first if the machine has been sitting for a period of time. Water can cause the moving components to rust and modify the oil's properties. Hope this helps!

    I am an owner of a S Bend model C of 1935 vintage. The serial number match to the archive of S Bend build available on the web. historical photos and history, also. I humbly suggest you install a set of safety glasses and gain the habit of wearing them at switch on. As to the machine: The craftsmen who were the final set up hand scraped the bed ways to precision. As to the model and various set up, straight stock is well found to use of the tail stock and live center as with the work supported, fitment to jaw alignment is useful to rather gain concentric run out. Fundamentally, the operator of this model type meets a more demanding bit of craft than modern DRO. As speed and set up require a practice interval to meet adjustment needs. And, I think the storage has left a bit of lube and clean up to a well restored function. These machines are of such rugged construction to have continued thru a lifetime of work. For the interested larger introduction, Max Grant, Swan Valley Machine, AU has a channel devoted to mill and lathe work flow. Max won wonderful competition for his early craftsman ship and is a great teacher to work as a hobby or much more. Max has a S Bend in a recent mill recorded post as background. As to the switch and operation, entanglement is a threat, as also where workpiece not fully secured can be a hazard. A full on best safety approach is needed. The approach as simplicity and hands on best tool define the work part. Absolutely satisfying to master as basic skill. Please make more chips. And, where I bid you and channel a great season. M.

      I will definitely get myself some safety glasses for the next use. As for knowing what model I have, do you know where I should look on the machine to find out? I'll agree with you that these older lathes do require more skill and attention to detail than a newer machine of this century. I will have to see if I can aquire a live center to help support the material as I'm turning it. I love to constantly learn and achieve goals so getting familiar with this machine should be a fun and exciting task for me. I will have to check out some of the work that you have mentioned above. After all my full time job as an engineer has me sitting at a computer all day long so I'm always looking for new content to watch! Thanks for the support! I hope to see your comments in future videos!

      @@GAVINCANFIELD I am delighted to view this well built machine. The serial number is found as a stamping on bed way tailstock end "between the flat and vee." To add your serial number to the SBL Workshop Database, e-mail your information to:wswells as the web site listing delivery records and where owners can post info as to individual build. lathes were first numbered sequentially, beginning approximately, with number 700, in July 1910. In March of 1947, a new serial number system was introduced see WS Wells (Index). Keep in mind that when searching the database, try to determine if your lathe is pre or post 1947. The pre 1947 lathes are listed sequentially, and the post 1947 lathes are listed by size letter/lathe size. All older Series O, N, R and T are not size specific *The units all model types shipped world wide. As Ebay and facebook market place at present various parts and models are widely available. For instance when an approach to dozer track bushings as a repair is undertaken to multiples, The need for work part task as series is suggested to a "jig" with the measurements worked out and toolholder repeat cuts and feed all worked out to best speed, finish as a process. I happen to use various practice bits to fitment as goal. Don't forget this can be done in reverse gear to send chips down ward. Cuts as away from headstock from center of part on outfeed to avoid any wreck. Perhaps secure a few track rollers to practice as where a work flow (process) is achieved to fill the job requirement numbers. Note: good lighting fixture(s) help a lot. Abom79 channel recently posted a production drilling and boring job and a journeyman with the most modern tools demonstrates his skill. Regards, ...McGary

    Here is what you need to do: 1. Find out what model of South Bend Lathe it is, and what year it was made, get on E bay, and see if you can get a Manual for it. This will get you started on how to clean it up, and get it running. South Bend had lots of different models, like Heavy 9s, Light 9s, Heavy 10s, etc. You will need to buy the correct parts for your machine. DO NOT RUN IT WITHOUT PROPER LUBRICATION OF THE HEADSTOCK BEARINGS. ! You can kill your lathe if you run it with dry bearings. 2. You will be haunting E bay to get parts, like change gears, and other bits and pieces. Also, look into getting a proper sized Aloris style tool post holder. They will work wonders for your lathe's stiffness and will reduce chatter. 3. Also, get a three jaw chuck that threads onto your lathe, a faceplate, and Jacobs style drill chucks for both the headstock and tailstock. Also, both live and dead centers for the tailstock. You will also need a Dial indicator on a magnetic mount so that you can center your work properly. You are just starting out. You have a lot of work ahead of you to rebuild your lathe, and get it tuned up, but once you have it running, and start using it, you will be asking yourself how you ever got along without it ! Good luck !

      @paulward There is so much good information here to reference and I really appreciate the support! I did notice Ebay has a bunch of tooling/headstocks available to purchase so I will definitely be buying some tooling form there. I did lube all moving parts up, I know I didn't show it on camera but I did make sure to lubricate the machine before I made the video. I did notice some numbers stamped into the cross feed plate. "9 43" so I wasn't sure if that meant it was made in September of 1943 or not. I will have to look over the whole machine more closely for a serial number or a manufacture date/ model number. I do have a dial indicator and a magnetic block so I will be sure to get that out for the next video! Thank you for the info and support! I will be sure to reference this comment again when Searching ebay for parts!

    Yes, more brush hogging videos please!! I bought a Ford 640 and a 5ft brush hog to use at my in-laws. It's very relaxing and I enjoy my tractor time!!

      Just what the doctor ordered! I've put out a handful more brush hogging videos and I have a couple more in the works. Be sure to check them out if you haven't already!

      The KX040-4 is a very capable machine. I'm really glad I bought it. the salesman wanted me to buy a 33 so I didn't have to buy a bigger trailer and worry about DOT. So glad I made my own decision and didn't let them persuade me otherwise

    The log rack for the countyline splitters will help you out a ton!

      I should really look into this as anything that can assist in splitting is worth buying. I hate doing firewood to begin with so anything that speeds it up on in favor of.
