HOW TO Replace Cab Bushings on Ford SuperDuty Truck
Whether we’re hauling solar panels, or concrete to build ground mounts, seems like we’re always using our truck here on the homestead and we couldn’t do half the projects we without one! 🛻.
A friend recently asked me about replacing the cab bushings on their Ford F250 Pickup Truck because they knew I made a video about it a couple years back.
I thought I’d post it again here, just in case it might help out anyone who owned a similar truck with this problem. If you don’t have a Ford Super-duty pickup, you probably have a friend who does, so send this video to them and they will thank you! 👍🤩
These bushings are an issue for Ford Super-duty trucks ranging from 1999 through 2016, but this video only applies to the 2011-2016 models. The method to fix the older ones is slightly different.
If you own a 2011-2016 Ford SUPERDUTY Truck and hear loud noises under your cab, there’s a good chance you may have worn out rubber cab bushings. These separate the cab from the frame and help cushion your ride. However, the rubber cushion material Ford used in later model Superduty trucks degrades quickly and will wear out in only a few years, even in the best climate and conditions.
In this video I show how to diagnose if the bushings are the problem and I quickly go through how I replaced the bushings on my 2013 F250 4x4 Super/Extended Cab pickup truck.
I was quoted over $1,500 to have a shop do this work and when I finished I'd spent less than $400 total! I’m not a mechanic by any means, but this is not a difficult job if you are VERY patient, careful, and have the basic tools.
If you have any additional questions, please leave them in the comment section. I’ll be happy to answer if I can.
Here are the parts I used, but please contact Dorman to confirm the part number for your specific truck, before ordering. These are not affiliate links. How many solar panels and batteries are you using with your setup? Thanks!

      @@txflyerken173 Hi Ken, I’m using six Lifepower4 (5.12kWh) batteries and 12 405w SEG bifacial panels at the moment. I will say that more panels are needed to get through the hot TX summer days. I’m presently working on installing another 12 panels ground mount and 12-14 more on the roof of the carport I just built. Running two EG4 6000xps, the ideal scenario would be four PV arrays at 4500w +/- each (each string under 480VDC). If you plan to sell power back to the grid, you’ll want to go with a hybrid inverter like the EG4 12k or the 18k. I don’t want to be tied to the grid so I went with (2) 6000xp inverters. This should provide 12,000 watts of AC power to my house (50A), with 24,000w surge, and allow up to 20kW (16kW usable) of PV. You can tie the grid to the 6000xp to use as a bypass when extra power is needed, but I haven’t done that as I want try to take us 100% off grid. If you have questions let me know and if you’re purchasing new equipment please use my $50 off discount code! Thanks! 👍🤩⚡️☀️🔋

      @@txflyerken173 We live in the country and our grid goes down frequently. When we moved out here we knew we had to have reliable back up with either a whole house generator or solar. The solar costs a little more but it pays for itself over several years. A generator won’t pay for itself and takes expensive fuel to make power, so it was a no brainer. Watch my DIY solar backup video. I started out with a battery, some used panels and a $700 inverter. It’s a great way to start out and you can continually add to the system as you grow. ua-cam.com/video/0H7BIy4eLx8/v-deo.htmlsi=vuoPJtlX-dECg33R

    You still have to shut off the main breaker off in the main panel if not your going to back feed down line

    • @terrahillfarm
      @terrahillfarm 15 днів тому

      @@jasonhorner7243Thanks for the feedback! 👍 Before installing a transfer switch of any kind, I’d suggest you consult a master electrician, because I am not one.⚡️However, shutting off the main breaker is not required with a properly installed Manual Transfer Switch. The manual that comes with the Reliance MTS actually instructs you to leave it on. images.thdstatic.com/catalog/pdfImages/33/33c57fd7-da79-4d14-8324-35a21cb4f83e.pdfqq This is because a MTS isolates the grid for the circuits powered externally and all power in hots is going directly into your house wiring circuits, not into your panel. If this were true, you could not power circuits in your house, with a generator, and power circuits from the grid simultaneously, which you can do with a properly installed, multi-circuit manual transfer switch. (I’ve done this with solar powering some circuits and grid powering others). You can turn off the main if you like, however, a properly installed MTS cannot back feed the grid and this is why they’re specifically recommended by power companies for back up power solutions. There’s another discussion one could have about the possibility of back-feeding neutrals in GFCI/AFCI circuits, but shutting off the main breaker wouldn’t help you any there and that’s beyond this discussion. I would suggest just avoiding wiring GFCI & AFCI circuits with an MTS altogether, if you can. Thanks! 😀

    We depend on our truck for many jobs around the homestead and when it breaks down we’re in trouble. We’ve had to learn to do our own repairs and this is one repair few shops want to tackle. If you look around at older Ford Superduty Pickup trucks, you’ll see many where the body line of the cab and bed don’t line up correctly. The cab bushings are the culprit and it was not that difficult to repair. If you see a friend’s truck with this problem, you can point it out, look like a genius, and then refer them to this video! 🤣

    This is good advice, and it shows you don't have to invest a fortune to survive an extended outage relatively comfortably. I did almost this exact thing after a derecho when we were out of power 4 days. Home Depot had no generators for sale, but plenty of those cheap, small A/C window units. Fortunately, I already had the generator. A couple of additional tips: do NOT plug a bunch of extension cords into each other to make a super long run to reach various things all over your house. That is incredibly dangerous and can easily cause a fire. Everything will seem fine at first, but it definitely isn't and eventually the wires will overheat from excess resistance and the cord will catch on fire. It can also fry the compressor motor in your fridge from voltage sag. Instead, take the time to plan out what you want to run in advance and buy cords with a low enough AWG (gauge/thickness) and long enough to reach the critical stuff. The cords you need for the big loads like the fridge will probably be expensive, but don't cheap out on them. If you are buying a solar generator, get one big enough to run your fridge (both wattage and battery capacity) by itself, silently, overnight. Once you get the bedroom cold at night you won't need the A/C all night long, but you can't leave your fridge unpowered for 8 hours, your food will spoil. Your neighbors without a generator don't want to listen to yours all night, they are having a bad enough time already, and if your generator is safely locked up and off while you are asleep it is much less likely to grow legs. You can get through a long outage relatively comfortably with just a few smart investments ahead of time.

    • @terrahillfarm
      @terrahillfarm 2 місяці тому

      @@trustbuster23 Thank you for these great points. 👍 I calculated if I caught it all on sale I could buy everything needed for around $750. If you can spend more for a quality inverter generator and power station, it’s a very good investment. I tested that little 700wh Bluetti and it ran a full size French door refrigerator for almost 6 hours off one charge. If you run one heavy duty (10/3) extension cord from generator to the AC and a regular extension cord to charge the power station, you can run your appliances directly off the power station and get surge protection and pure sine wave power. This will help protect sensitive electronics. There’s just no reason to suffer in a power outage if you prepare ahead of time. We need to continue to help educate folks so they can safely ride out these events because there will be more coming. 🤩☀️⚡️🌞🔋

    Great advice! I have acquired this set up over the last few years. Years ago I bought a 5000 btu ac when my central ac failed, that kept one room cool and comfortable for several days until I got my HVAC system replaced. While working from home I got a Yeti 150 to keep my PC going in case of a power outage. It saved me from having to drive into the office a few times! Now I have a 2200w gas generator, a 1000wh, and a smaller 268wh battery stations. About a month ago I had a transfer switch added to my electric panel, and I just ordered 400 watts of solar panels. It’s been many years since I’ve experienced a power outage of more than 3 or 4 hours, but it’s a good feeling to know I have some backup, especially with the current state of affairs in the world. I just wish I had gotten a dual fuel generator though. Storing gasoline is a pain.

      @@dons5105 Thanks for the feedback! I don’t want to contribute to over negative speculation, I just want to pose these questions for consideration. Panel inventories are low right now based on the inventory lists from the wholesalers and warehouse sellers I follow. Will bifacial panels maintain similar pricing to single sided panels having never had tariffs applied? Will the decline in residential solar panel demand lead to less production of those smaller panel sizes and more production of larger commercial sized panels for solar farms which are still booming? Why are solar panels in Europe a third to half of the cost cheaper than in the US, tariffs? I think these are relevant questions. Personally, I don’t think tariffs work well as there are too many ways to around them. If you want to encourage more US panel production, encourage more competition as that historically has created innovation. If you have a big solar project coming up soon, I think you have to weigh all these factors yourself and accept that a new 25% tariff has the possibility of increasing the cost of a typical pallet of bifacial panels by $800-$1000. That’s not much in the total cost of project, it’s just the math. 👍⚡️☀️🔋🤩
