TRAILER: Alec Trickett trains Chantal and Grass Roots eventer Smarty Pants
Show jumping trainer Alec Trickett works with 7 yr old grass roots eventer Smarty Pants and Chantal Siddle, on improving the horse's balance and encouraging the rider to wait for her fences. To avoid falling out through the corners in the warm-up, Chantal rides Smarty's shoulders to the inside to ensure they are in line with his hind quarters. Alec asks Chantal to look up over her fences to help Smarty land on the correct lead and a 'dog-leg' to an upright with a little outside flexion on the turn, assists with straightness to the fence. When Chantal sits patiently the related distances ride well and the pair's focus improves when putting it all together to ride a course.

    I'm late to this video, I'm well aware but this is so much more beautiful than dressage today. I have never wished that the beauty, companionship, bond, and love that flowed beautifully in classical dressage. I wish that the world would produce more horse people as in tune with their horses as Klaus and so many others. One day maybe the world will come to their senses, until then I will bask in the light of the pass and try to savor it as much as possible.

    My horse was actually bred and trained by him, she lived with him for about 6 years. She is now a jumper because she didn’t love dressage but we do all sorts of work, like dressage, trail, pole work, and flat work. I agree that if you own a horse you should be hands on and create a partnership with them. I tack, untack, groom, bathe, lunge, turnout, etc, without the help of a groom; occasionally my friend will lunge her if I can’t get to the barn or my mom will help me a little but that’s about it. I’m glad to know that my beautiful Hailey was trained in a good home.

    So it should be for every horse. Sadly its not, horses are ridden once a day and "put away"forgotten in the stable, they never get to be horses. Dressage stables in Europe especially dealer stables are the worst. At most the horses get stuck in a viewless walker going round and round. As riders we owe them a close partnership a life beyond being nothing but a commodity. Clause is so right, foremost a horse should be the perfect riding horse, giving pleasure to its rider and visa versa. Hacking through the countryside and enjoying life in the fields at all stages in its training. Dressage comes out of that basis to produce a happy horse, not endless day in day out, year in year out, schooling towards that one test in a small arena for half an hour then put away. The large horse factories breeding and producing horses today are ghastly soulless places for a horse especially for the stallions. We should change that.

      I have a young Westphalien Horse, who stands 24 h every day under the open sky (in winter there is a stable, but it´s open and wide, with his 6 best friends) with nearly 35 horses ... maybe he could be a great dressage horse one day, but he will always be a happy horse, who will not live in 3x3 meters boxes, without gras and friends around him. It´s true, most stables are sad here an the life of a great dressage horse is most the time f*ucking sh*t, but not all ;-).

    I feel like the rider should groom her horse, because he's hers and I feel like she has done NOTHING to bond with that horse except for ride him. I may be wrong, but that is definitely what it looks like!

    • @beautifuldancingfreestyle2202
      @beautifuldancingfreestyle2202 7 років тому

      this is exactly it. THESE SO CALLED RIDERS- say they have a bond with their horse but have these grooms do it for them. The horses just learn to bond with their grooms; instead of their riders. which is why ANKY and a few others have to use methods to force their horse to do something-its because simply the riders dont groom or spend time with the horses. all the horses know is that that person makes them work, and then they dont see the rider again until next ride session. (fortanuly Charlotte Dujardin is not like this- yes she has a groom but she actually spends time with her horses- other then riding. she does hand walking, taking horses to pasture and spending time with them, grooming on some days, giving treats, and having fun with the horse as the horse is having fun.) its truly sad about this--this is why EVEN AT SHOWS even though my dad is like "ill groom her for you" im like "no, I Got it!" grooming is valuable to a parternship between horse and rider. it is an important piece of a bond; with my mare, she loves to be groomed. BUT she only likes to be groomed by me (when my old trainer would braid her mane, she would stomp her feet and would try to bite her, or when my trainer would groom her. or one of my friends would; she would stop at nothing to get me instead, I ended up now having to braid her mane and having to groom her. ALTHOUGH she does love attention from others, when it comes to grooming and braiding and riding-- she has to gain your trust.) she is not an easy horse to ride (train) and you cant expect to just hop on her and she trusts you, she will just rise her head up in the air and worry if im not around. but I know when she does that- that I have her trust and a bond with her, and when im around she is perfectly fine with people touching her. which I find cute! She is also in a pasture (46 acres) with 26 other horses, I commonly spend time with her in the pasture, doing liberty and playing with her. I only am able to do this because I groom her, and have her trust. UNLIKE many of the top riders; that have a groom, a person to massage their horses, a person to tack them up for them, a person to wash them for them, and do everything besides riding for them. I STRONGLY believe that, people like this shouldnt have a horse. IF YOU CANT TAKE CARE OF IT AND CAN ONLY RIDE IT YOU DONT NEED IT! I wish people would understand..

    My horse does rear quite a bit, actually, and this lunging rope has never interfered with his rearing. I used to use it on the bit but I don't now - I attach it to the side rings of the cavesson and use central ring to attach the lunge.

    It's an excellent device - the most inobtrusive and non-restricting there is. Much better than pessoa or equi-ami. The horse can't brace against it and it does encourage the head to be lowered and top line relaxes, it's really helpful. Not every horse needs it and not absolutely every horse takes to it. I have one with a problem back and it's literally saved his life (and career). I no longer use it regularly because he has learnt to stretch down without any aid now, but once in a while, especially if he has been out of work, out it comes again and he remembers it and takes to it like duck to water. The video here speaks for itself too - I dare all of you who is criticizing it to achieve the same degree of relaxation with your horses!

    Never once does the horse blow out or behave as if he is enjoying or relaxing into this grooming routine...the horse's head is tied high, and short...even when released and he turns away he never blows out or shows signs of acceptance...he does finally stretch his neck down and swallow as she leaves the stall....horses are so damn tolerant, they will allow all sorts of treatment.
