Trailer Boating - South African Style
Переглядів 584 тис.12 років тому
Here is a short video about how they launch and retrieve their pleasure boats on the east coast of South Africa. After seeing so many threads on the iboats.com forum about the woes of trailering boats at the ramps here in the U.S., I thought a short video from our trip to South Africa would be entertaining for my fellow iboaters and for all.

      They do launch that boat like that. If you look up on UA-cam shelly Beach boat launching you will find vids. They do it the exact same way as the first clip. Except the boat slides off slowly since it's so big.

    Actually launching threw the surf from the beach has been done this way for years in many places. On the Oregon coast the dory fishing fleet has done this forever. Their boats are all flat bottom 17-24 foot dory commercial fishing boats that have an outboard motor that raises up for launch and landing. Look on UA-cam at dory fishing Oregon. 😎

    I love it,,,, these guys have some balls,, and absolutely know what their doing,,,, and love the fact they dont give a shit about the boat bottoms,,,lol love it these cats are clearly out of their minds,, and love boating,,,, wish here in America, people would have those kind of balls,,, and if we did, the government would step in and stop us from boating in those conditions,

    nasty nasty, I was born in Afrika, now i'm in Australia, the difference is in Africa the boats have self draining decks, and could be called surf boats. Here in Australia we launch in rivers, and the decks are below or near water-line.

      @goatnad6970 they have steel keels. And if you launched a boat in these conditions you would know how difficult it is to turn around the boat in these moving waters. Especially when there is only 2 people.

    Launched my boat on both the east and west coast near Cape Town, always from a boat launch in a harbour. Boats with a single motor limited to one nautical mile offshore daylight only. Twin motors limited to 40 nautical miles off shore, required registration number both sides of bow plus your skippers ticket number on port side near stern. Boat trailer needed boat name and your phone number on it. All for safety.

    • @theboarman
      @theboarman 8 років тому

      +MrCiammurro alot of boats have only one engine and venture out more then 1 mile for various reasons, how would that work for sail boats? gotta have two outboards? your thought is idiotic.

    • @lwiltshire
      @lwiltshire 4 роки тому

      Seas are too rough for hovercraft. This was a relatively flat day for this coast. This technique is the next best thing. On the plus side, growing up on this coast and learning to swim out to back-line for surfing or diving, means that almost any other place in the world that people dive, launch, or swim is a breeze by comparison.

    Guess they don't no how to build boat ramps and a dock but we are talking about Africa right maybe that's why over time that will fuck your boat up.

    • @bakkieute
      @bakkieute 9 років тому

      Well how long do you reckon a dock will last in the waves? And this is a reasonably calm day and how long will a concrete ramp exist on sea sand with constant wave action undermining it? As you can see in the beginning of the footage there are no coastal waterways around the area. It is the best way under the conditions. As you say...its Africa...so they made an ingenious plan!

    Hey I grew up there and my dad and I boated for years, we fitted good quality stainless steel keel strips to protect from any small stones etc as well as for the trailer work and nobody paints their hull so its always extra gel coated on construction - so beach launching keeps the hull nice smooth and clean. Actually the launching & beaching is huge fun !!

      In this video, how did that one boat fail exactly? I don’t understand why he turned around. If you are flying up onto the beach, why do you need to time your beaching with the waves exactly?

    The secret is a very very strong good electric winch. My friend bought a small boat and it took 30 min to get the little 12 footer onto the trailer because the hand winch was a piece of junk. My boat however is a heavy 17 footer with a very good hand winch and it took 5 min to get on trailer.
