    Payton was amazing and may have been a HOF quarterback in today’s game. His talent on the field would still translate to success as a running back in today’s game. He was an absolute nightmare for defenses even on one demential and really bad Bears teams.

    Listen to this quote by analyst Bob Trumpy in the 1985 week 2 matchup between the Bears and Patriots. Trumpy points our the difference in the quality of offensive linemen that Brown and Payton ran behind. ua-cam.com/video/cPMynFwllLw/v-deo.htmlsi=MPod1CEMUgkxSWWS&t=397

      Thanks for sharing that!!! I even point this out in video 4 - IMPACT… how little help Payton had on the o-line, QB and Skill Positions. He carried that offensive load!!! If you haven’t checked out video 4, you might like it👍

    I like the method. I understand post-season performance is embedded in a couple categories, but don't think it is weighted enough. For a QB, it's a must to perform well in post season, but we let it slide for other positions. Payton didn't perform that well post-season. They finally won the SB with their D and balanced offense. For Brown, it is hard to take the 1950s NFL seriously, when players made 17K and audiences preferred college football. I just don't see serious competition. Also, Paul Brown still ran the offence, and there was a pretty good passing game. The Jim Brown era were the down years of Paul Brown, and some say Jim Brown ended Paul's career in CLE. Plus. he didn't block. I don't know who the best was. Maybe an analysis of best in a 3 yr span, 5 yr and 10. Campbell for 3 is all I can say.

    • @Says_me
      @Says_me 2 місяці тому

      Yeah… post season is tough to weigh in. Most top backs did so-so to poor in the post season (Brown, Payton, OJ - only 1 playoff, Sayers - never played in the post season, Sanders, LT, AP, and on-and-on) If I do a QB series, post season has to be factored in And I have been thinking about best single season or 3-yr apex peak. Campbell, OJ, Dickerson will likely rise up As for Payton’s post season… he did well in 79. 2 TDs, over 100 yscm… and an 85 yd TD run called back for illegal procedure (ugh) In 84, he had over 100 yds rushing and a 19 yd TD pass that was part of the game winning points Only 61 yds in the Super Bowl… but his gravity was undeniable. The Pats figured their only shot was to contain him. They did that… but got trounced

      @@Says_me Interesting correlation between a team having the best running back and lack of post season success. I would argue that only 2 RBs carried a team in the SB (Czonka and Harris), and both against the same defense. But Campbell had bad weather or injury in AFC Championships.

      @@jimstevenson424Harris, Csonka, Terrell Davis, Emmitt, and Riggins are the only backs that really delivered in the SB… but not all “carried” their teams All of them do have a SBMVP And then there is the Phoenix… Ottis Anderson. Rose to the occasion in 1990… 100 yds rushing, TD for game winning points, and the SBMVP

      @@timotheewilliams9086well… I don’t think it would be quite that extreme (2k each season) but he would have had a high likelihood of doing much more. The same could be said for Payton, LT, Earl Campbell, and more This is also why I factored in IMPACT in video 4. To proportionately credit the backs relative to the strength of their offense and the opposition Not surprisingly, Emmitt rated poorly in that category because of the strength of his team… and Barry rated near the top Not surprisingly,

    Perfect analysis, Payton is and has always been the GOAT. I like how you did it, you did not just watch his greatest plays. You watched every play. With that said, I would have loved to have seen what Bo Jackson would have done had he not had the hip injury and baseball to distract him. I would say he is one of the greatest athletes to ever play the game.

    Couldn't have been easy compiling all this data. Well done While I'm a Browns fan, it's really difficult for me to argue that Walter Payton isn't the Greatest to ever play the position. Had it all (even when his teams didn't) and left it all on the field each and every play. I'm more of an "Eye Test" guy (that worst kind of critic I suppose 😂) It is nice to see some backs who don't get mentioned all that often get a little moment of spotlight. Chuck Foreman was ahead of his time when it came to versatility. Nice job on the series as a whole Cue the arguments

      Based on this video series, it was razor thin The strength of the offenses that they carried was the fine line between them I can’t argue if you look at Brown as the GOAT… well, I could… I just released a 5 part video series on it 😜 But there are still factors out there that could be weighed

    Great video. Some issues with every running back performance comparison (heck, most positions in football) is that a running back stats rely heavily on offensive lineman capability which is one reason that I don’t think of Emmitt Smith as even close to a top 5 all time RB despite his stats indicating he has a case. On the flip side, I saw Barry Sanders and he has a weak offensive line. His stats would have been much better if he had Emmitt Smith’s DAL offensive line The other issue you touched upon at the end with the changing roles of RB. 70’s to 90’s will be greatly hurt by the fact RBs weren’t used much on the passing game but in the 2000’s (perhaps started with RAMS and Faulk in late 90’s) incorporated RBs into the passing game

    • @Says_me
      @Says_me 3 місяці тому

      On the point of Emmitt’s place, the next category factors in team strength, accounting for QB quality, O-line quality, and Skill Position quality. I will give you a hint… Emmitt winds up out of the top 10!!! As for changing roles over the years… this is why I’m not assessing who’s the “best”. This analysis does not measure talent or skill level. Just what was achieved. Terrell Davis was injured early in his career, Ottis Anderson played on a shit team, new guys play in an era less inclined to let them cook… and that obsoletes them in their mid-20s I can’t account for those things, and it’s why I’m not claiming superiority of anyone based on skill. Bo Jackson was arguably the most skilled back of all time, but he didn’t achieve anything. So who… based on their circumstances, achieved greatness… and of those that did, who was the greatest

      @@Says_megreat points and great idea for next video. I feel the late 90’s to early 2010’s was the most ideal for RB stats as the one main RB was used almost as frequently for running as era with the most carries by individual RBs while also being heavily used on passing. But overall the past decade it’s been more RB by committee (probably maximizes efficiency) and before the late 90’s the RB weren’t used as much in passing game - SportsNMore1453
