San Diego JGs make historic first jump from SIO Pier
Tuesday, July 2, 2024, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, La Jolla, California USA: In a historic first, San Diego Junior Lifeguards (JGs) Gabriel Rushers Kayla Hanoch with their instructor Sydney Fortune were the first to jump from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) Pier. Hundreds more would follow them over the course of the day. The pier jump which is the culmination of the JG Program where JGs between the ages of 9 to 15 are encouraged to “face your fear and jump the pier” traditionally takes place in Ocean Beach (OB). However, storm damage to the OB Pier made it impossible to hold the event there this year.

While swapping out @SubAquaImaging Time Lapse Cameras on 4.12.2024 we encountered a curious Seven Gill #shark that came in for a close pass several times. Our colleague Bill was so focused on the task at hand that he never saw it despite the fact that it made numerous passes! 10-Mile Relay Swim

The 18th Annual 10-Mile Relay Swim. This is a charity event that raises funds for the Prevent Drowning Foundation of San Diego. Teams swim a 1-mile course in the open ocean in relay teams of between 2 and 5 swimmers. There are also a handful of swimmers who swim the entire 10miles solo. Each mile takes 20 to 40 minutes and the contest last about 6 hours.

Instructor Sydney Fortune with JGs Gabriel Rusher and Kayla Hanoch were the first ever San Diego Junior Lifeguards (JGs) to jump from the SIO pier on Tuesday, July 7th 2024. Normally the jump is made from the Ocean Beach pier but storm damage meant that the annual jump couldn’t be held there this year.
Haha. All I can think about is the bobs burgers episode where Tina is training to become a jr. Lifeguard. Sugar cookies! 😂

Yes, they’re hard to see in this (ambient) lighting. One of my dive buddies got a good shot with a camera & strobe and we could count all seven gills. They are very flat to the body quite close to the pectoral fin.
