Exploring Southern Albania 🇦🇱 | Gjirokaster, Ksamil, Saranda, Berat
The second of two videos from my two weeks in Albania in May 2024. I start my journey in Gjirokaster, a city not too far from the Albania - Greece border. I spend a day walking around the city and exploring the ancient aquaduct in the valley above. Then I take the bus towards Saranda to the famous Blue Eye. I have a walk around and then while waiting for the bus, I run into Max who I met in the guesthouse in Theth! I get a ride with him to Ksamil, where I stay four nights. After exploring the beaches and chilling out, I head north again to Saranda and then on to Berat, where I spend my last two nights in Albania.

    It’s a shame Albania has such a negative reputation. Thanks for showing the great scenery - nothing like what I expected and presumably nowhere near as touristy as much of Western Europe. I’m based in the UK so it’s only a few hours away and now somewhere I’ll consider visiting, and of course tramping in the mountains. I’m impressed by you carrying rucksacks Jared, especially when you seem to find yourself walking real distances around to your accommodation! Hope the drone footage is working well for you and I look forward to seeing the results later in the year. Not sure H&S would approve of the footbridges though!

    Phew! You do well to navigate thru such unfamiliar surroundings, using your wits to jump onto local trains, get yourself accommodation (yeah, of varying quality!), find your way around very untouristy places etc. Great that you've covered the usual haunts (Paris, Brussels etc) but now have branched off to visit some pretty exotic locations - especially when you have to make every decision on your own. Just so different to your tramping in NZ (although I bet you miss that). Thanks for finding the time to record then edit your material. All really good quality and I look forward to seeing more of them!

    Awesome series of videos from your TA! Planning to hike the south island as well next year! Would you recommend bringing a drone on the TA or is it not worth carying the weight? I have a DJI mini 3 so it’s not that heavy, but it’s quite bulky in its bag

    • @onthetrailnz
      @onthetrailnz Місяць тому

      Thanks!! Personally, I would probably not recommend carrying it. I took mine (at that time DJI Mini 2 - now I have the Mini 3 Pro) for a few of the shorter sections where my parents were able to drop if off to me at the start of the section and pick it up at the end. But it would be very annoying to have to carry through the longer sections where you need to have more food like the Richmond’s or the Waiau Pass

    Such a lovely walk with the old stone steps and Rocky cave style trails...again I'm in awe of the cleanliness, puts NZ's clean green image to shame to be fair. So pleased you found some food. Question...what do the campgrounds you stay in look like (I assume they have facilities for showering and doing laundry? Another lovely video, keep up the great work and happy walking.

    • @onthetrailnz
      @onthetrailnz Місяць тому

      Yes it was beautiful! The campgrounds are very basic compared to NZ ones - they have toilets and showers and usually some kind of shared area to socialise. But the majority don’t have kitchens, which is very annoying and I wasn’t prepared for. They are more expensive as well (usually about $35 NZ a night). It’s been pretty easy to find vegetarian food in that area as well, but where I am now in Montenegro and Albania, it’s much harder…

    Obviously the cold didn’t bother you Jared! It would be interesting to return in summer as a comparison. BTW what are you using to edit your videos? Presumably you took along a laptop and download your iPhone videos onto that for editing? Anyway, the quality is excellent and as a new GoPro user I appreciate how time consuming editing is, and you’re on the move too which must make it even more difficult! Will you be returning to the UK at all? I was interested to see an earlier video in the Surrey Hills, a stone’s throw away from me! I was in NZ whilst you were here…would have been a surprise to see you wandering around Box Hill or somewhere in the area!

      Haha, I definitely don’t miss the cold 😂. I would love to go back when it’s actually hiking season and do a few more trails - the landscape would look so different. I am just using my iPhone to edit the videos - I would use iMovie on my laptop if I was at home, but I didn’t want to bring it with me for this trip! I use LightCut and iMovie on my phone - there are features I like about both, so every video goes through both apps 😂. I am not planning on returning to the UK at this stage, but my plans are pretty open still, so anything could happen! It would have been funny to run into there! 😀

    Good to follow your progress! You certainly jumped in at the deep end, leaving the end of a NZ summer and heading right up to the north of Norway! Hope you have a big budget...I know Norway is ridiculously expensive unfortunately.

      Haha yeah, it was definitely quite the temperature change. Norway is very expensive - I would have liked to stay longer, but my bank account wouldn’t have 😂

    Thank you so much for these videos. You are answering all my questions about remote NZ trails, especially about finding the tracks where the original forest is still present. I'm from Oregon in the USA, my partner is a Kiwi, and we're both enjoying your Te Araroa series. We were doing the same thing last year in NZ but by car from Cape Reinga to Bluff and Slope Point. Love your production qualities so much!

      Thank you so much!! It’s great to hear that my videos are helping! I’ve also done Cape Reinga to Bluff by car a few years ago - there are some pretty amazing spots on the way! I’m actually going to be moving to the US for college this August, so I might have to experience a few of the American trails soon!

      The first section on the very left is counted as 0, so the fourth section is referred to as the number 3. This is so there are no two digit numbers possible (ie. the section on the right is 9, not 10) :)
