A Walk in The Heart of Stockholm
Starting at Odenplan, named after the Norse god Odin, is a central square in Stockholm with a vibrant urban character. Historically, it has been a bustling hub since the late 19th century, surrounded by elegant 19th- and 20th-century buildings. The area is home to Gustav Vasa Church, an impressive neoclassical structure completed in 1906. This spot reflects Stockholm’s development during the industrial era.
From Odenplan, head south along Drottninggatan, Stockholm’s iconic pedestrian street. This historic thoroughfare was first laid out in the 17th century under the rule of Queen Christina, hence the name “Queen’s Street.” It’s a vibrant stretch filled with shops, cafes, and landmarks. Key spots include Strindberg’s Intima Teater, a small theater once used by playwright August Strindberg, and the Kungsgatan intersection, a crossroads of historic commerce marked by the grand towers of Kungsgatan. In winter, the street is often lit with festive lights, adding to the cozy Nordic atmosphere.
As Drottninggatan winds down, it leads to the bridge Riksbron, offering stunning views of the Swedish Parliament (Riksdag) and the Royal Palace. Crossing into Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s Old Town, is like stepping into history. Gamla Stan is one of the best-preserved medieval city centers in Europe, with cobblestone streets, narrow alleys, and colorful buildings dating back to the 13th century. The walk through the Old Town feels timeless, with landmarks such as Storkyrkan Cathedral and Stortorget square, site of the historic Stockholm Bloodbath of 1520.
Reaching Lilla Gränd, one of the charming, narrow streets typical of Gamla Stan, you’ll find yourself surrounded by history. The small alleyways evoke the medieval past of Stockholm, a stark contrast to the bustling Drottninggatan. In January, the crisp air and early twilight cast a serene atmosphere over the city, making the walk a blend of history, culture, and Nordic charm.

Wow what a beautiful and serene place! It looks like something straight out of a movie. I imagine in the spring or summer when the trees are full and flowers blooming it's even more stunning to see. 🥰🏰
Thank you so much! It really is a magical place. We’re planning to visit again this summer and film, it will be amazing to see it in full bloom! ☀️🌿✨😍
@SwedishSolesAdventures Wonderful, I look forward to seeing that video. ☺️
Your videos have great potential but are facing challenges in reaching a wider audience. But here are some problems: 1. SEO score is very low 2. No title - description - tags are SEO friendly 3. Not sharing on social media platforms. I can help with that. My info is on this very channel.
Fantastic, very nice walk 👌🤗
Thank you so much! 😊🌟
The snow falling, the glow of the beautiful city lights, gorgeous architecture, church bells chiming and the Royal Palace Guards marching through the streets of Gamla Stan (what a treat to see them marching ... very cool)! Another wonderful walk ... thanks so much for sharing! 😊

Beautiful! Södermalm is a favorite of mine. The look of the red buildings/houses with the snow and glow of the lights from the windows & street lamps ... it really is just a perfect scene ... I love that! 🥰
Thank you so much for your kind words! Södermalm truly has a special charm, especially in winter, it’s almost like stepping into a storybook. The cozy glow from the windows and street lamps against the snow just adds that extra magic. Those red houses are such a classic touch. I’m so glad you love it as much as I do! 🥰
What a peaceful walk ... you literally had the entire Old Town to yourself! 😊 The historic buildings, cobblestone streets, and variety of shops and places to eat is wonderful in Gamla Stan you could spend an entire day there exploring everything. It is like a maze though .. haha .. easy to get disorientated if you are not familiar with area. We ate at Restaurant Tradition close to the Royal Armory ... excellent food and lovely little restaurant!
Thank you for your lovely comment! Gamla Stan truly is magical, especially when it’s so quiet, you can almost feel the history in the air, right? The cobblestone streets and charming little alleys are such a treat to explore, even if you do get a bit lost (but that’s half the fun, isn’t it? 🤣. Restaurant Tradition sounds like a fantastic choice, I’ll definitely have to check it out next time! So glad you enjoyed your visit to this gem of a place!😊
@SwedishSolesAdventures You are very welcome! Yes, getting lost (especially when traveling in a new place) is all part of the fun and experience .. I do agree! I hope you do try restaurant Tradition we really enjoyed it ... perfectly cozy, delicious meal and great service too. BTW I forgot to mention ... did you see that little mouse or critter scurry across the ground in Gamla Stan when you were in the center of town? haha It ran right under the big lighted tree in the center ... go back and watch around 6:50 in the video and you''ll spot it! 😁🐁
@@vondakirkpatrick348 I’ll definitely make a point to try Restaurant Tradition, it sounds absolutely delightful. You have such a sharp eye, I love that you caught that detail with the critter. Thank you for pointing it out, it made me smile! 🐁😁

This was fantastic to see ... especially the display shown on Stockholm City Hall ... beautiful! When we visited Stockholm The Nobel Prize Museum was the one place we didn't get enough time to squeeze into our already packed itinerary and we were quite bummed about missing out on seeing it. Thank you for sharing this it looks like it would be a wonderful festival to attend and see in person. 😊
Thank you for your wonderful comment! 🤗 I’m delighted that you enjoyed the video, especially the light display on Stockholm City Hall during the Nobel Week Lights festival. Oh Central Station ... I recall getting off the Arlanda Express and stepping into the station and just thinking WOW we really are here in Sweden and just taking in the atmosphere especially the hustle and bustle of everyone going here and there and everywhere (haha) and just the whole moment of it all ... I even have a photo I took from that top of the escalator where you panned the station from above ... I loved it! WOW ... the ceiling inside St. Clara Church is stunning ... so beautiful! Berzelii Park where you ended the walk at is next to where the lighted moose display is, right? I loved seeing those in person ... another beautiful sight in Sweden! All your walks are so enjoyable especially ones like this that bring back such great memories of our wonderful visit to your beautiful country ... thanks and have a great day/evening! 😊
Oh, what a heartfelt and beautiful message! I can just feel the joy and nostalgia radiating from your words. Central Station truly has that magical, bustling energy, doesn’t it? The feeling of arriving in Sweden for the first time and being swept up in the atmosphere, what a special memory to cherish! And yes, the view from the top of the escalator is something else, a perfect spot to capture the spirit of it all. St. Clara Church is such a gem, it’s ceiling is like stepping into a masterpiece of serenity and beauty, isn’t it? And you’re absolutely right, Berzelii Park is right by the lighted moose display! Seeing them glowing during wintertime is pure magic, one of those little touches that makes Sweden feel so enchanting. I’m so glad the walk brought back such warm and vivid memories for you, it sounds like your visit here was truly special. Thank you for sharing all of this, it put such a smile on my face! @@SwedishSolesAdventures Well thank you so much .. watching your videos is like stepping back in time to our little trip to Stockholm but add in seeing new things/places we would love to visit on our next time in Sweden. Yes, the church ceiling is amazing ... I'll be honest I'm not a deeply religious person but something about these churches (especially the older cathedrals) really moves me and I always make sure to at least visit one church when traveling just to take in the beauty. When we visited Westminster Abbey in London I literally got goosebumps and teared up a bit when we stepped through those enormous doors .. .haha.. probably silly of me but it is true. Those are the feelings and memories that last forever from special trips to far away places! Anyhow ... thank you again ... I'm having a catch up day on youtube videos and so glad your videos are in the mix to watch. 😊
@@SwedishSolesAdventures Oh and we took a photo of ourselves in front of the lighted moose display when we visited ... the snow covered ground was an added bonus ... one of my favorite photos from that trip🥰!

I completely agree with you, even though we’re not particularly religious ourselves, there’s something so powerful and moving about old churches and cathedrals. St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, for example, is absolutely breathtaking to step into, it’s an experience that stays with you. And your description of Westminster Abbey is so touching; it’s not silly at all! Those are exactly the kinds of feelings and memories that make trips to faraway places so unforgettable.
