Why I wish I never bought the Hollyland Mars M1 Camera Monitor

The monitor has a fantastic build quality but the software is a mess. Skip to 6:07 for the features that drive me insane: - Long boot up times - Slow connectivity when connecting video feeds - The color button is off for sub pages in the menu - The Peaking value measurement is weird - The Peaking doesn't work when you 2x or 4x in (so what's the point) - The false color chart blends in, and does...
I guess you gotta eat 🤷🏼♂️
Those white balance numbers are actually pretty common in other monitors. Almost every monitor I’ve had has that feature. I just keep it on the temp that matches my camera
Thank God I saw this video, I almost bought this crap.
Tbf mostly all reference monitors are calibrated to 6500k
You just talking about nothing.
I hope you get 1 million views bro you’re the only one covering this. God bless you.
amazing review !! and it's crazy how many features are way off the mark !
Subbed #44
good video but way too long. you could hace compressed that info a little better. thx though
Thanks for the tip! I really appreciate the feedback and makes a lot of sense. Filmed this without planning and more on the fly, but I would have been much better if planned ahead and streamlined 👍
wuquestion, is this for the enhanced version?
I appreciate both your original video and this follow-up. I had a chance to look at the Hollyland products at a trade show in the fall. Now that the M1 Enhanced has been released, I think that many of the software concerns have been addressed, so I might test it out. I'm also curious about the latency. The 4K Tx/Rx combo with the stubby antennae certainly has a better form factor than the other models with larger antennae. Having said that, the Mark II version of the 400S Pro was just released and it supposedly improves the latency. I might try it... or I might wait to see if a Mark II variant of the 4K will be released. Any thoughts you might have about this would be appreciated.
Hey man, Great video. I’m in a doubt about the m1 and just buying an ipad to use it as a monitor for the client. What would you recommend based on your experience?
interesting we have 3 of these as well as the 4k transmitters, Never had any issues pullying focus, we use the SDI out from the Canon C500MK2, intresting how you say you cant pull focus.....
Thanks for the review. You saved me from buying this.
Glad I could help
Can you do a review of the enhanced model?
I’ll have to look into it I didn’t realize they released one
Did they update the firmware?
what monitor do you recommend for someone who films weddings? I currently have the ninja v but it's giving me problems, do you have any good recommendations?
SmallHD all the way
It sucks, it has a terrible delay even through sdi and you cannot flip the screen without looking at a mirrored image when flipping the monitor upside down which I do all the time on gimbals. The range is pretty bad too actually. I,be had this for a couple of months now
There was a lot I liked about the MarsM1. The concept, the build... sweet. BUT I had to send it back. The signal kept dropping. I tried different cables and power. Nothing. I wanted to switch out all my monitors to M1's but that didn't work out. Bummer. Back to Shinobi's.
haha it was a little annoying... and then it was SUPER ANNOYING!
I wish hollyland did release a 90 degree bracket or something for the 400s pro ,
This is a textbook example of what NOT to do as an "influencer." I watched your first video and was intrigued; after seeing this, your credibility is circling the drain. I'm not going to believe any of your equipment reviews, ever again. Won't watch, won't subscribe.
He lost my trust also.... But influencers love to be influenced with money. He proves it.
His review of the monitor itself never changed, he talked about how he was personally treated and yes he talked about the free stuff.
The SDI input is dreadful - I’m the same, I bought two under the impression that it could be used as a Focus puller monitor. They’re terrible. Great screen and build. But they’re not for focus pulling.
Hi, Im interested in the product for focus pulling. Is there any better option at this price?
Even type C power input would be great. You could get any right angle type C cable of any length or quality. And it's surprisingly secure.
You call it great customer experience. I call it having a marketing team trying to influence the influencer marketing by bribing you with free gear, regardless of if they managed to do so or not. If it's not something they are willing to do to every customer, it is not a reflection of their service quality and should not be claimed as a positive on what should be an impartial unbiased review on your part.
Exact this. The guy is to positive now. That's a shame. (and influencers work)
You make a good point about this should be done for everyone, but he can only talk about what they did for him, not everyone else. As far as his overall review he still said the monitor wasn’t good and he didn’t change that stance at all. He only talked about how he was treated personally and the free stuff.
Bribed 😂
Bought this monitor and had all these same problems - the SDI lag is a dealbreaker for me all on its own (luckily sent it back in the return window). What's more insane to me is so many UA-cam reviews of this monitor don't mention any of this stuff lol
Good to hear you had a good customer experience with Hollyland! I purchased the Mars M1 a few months ago and then returned it because I wasn't happy with the screen panel quality (lots of banding and colour fringing). The transmission to my iPad was really choppy as well and not useable for client work. I then recently got the Mars 4K transmitter and tried streaming it to my iPad and wasn't happy with the quality either. I then got the Mars 4K receiver and was happy enough with the quality going to a dedicated monitor (not an iPad). I then found having the receiver and the monitor together was a bit too big of a footprint in my camera bag, so wanted an all in one monitor and receiver... so I just purchased the Mars M1 again, knowing the panel quality wasn't as good as my Shinobi, but it is quick and convenient! I use the M1 as a client monitor and so far clients have loved having it on set to check shots. I'll probably keep the M1 in my backpack so it's at all my shoots, but I'l probably set up a dedicated director's monitor kit with another higher quality screen and have that live in it's own bag to take to shoots that I know need a bigger screen and a nicer image panel.
Good to hear this. I’m in a doubt at the moment of buying an ipad or the m1 monitor and connect it with the 4k transmitter or even the 300 pro versions. I want to use it also as just an external minotor for a client. What would you recommend?
@@JarahGartenerSimons Since my orignal comment, I've sold the Hollyland and gone with the Teradek Serv Micro. It streams to my iPad Pro (12.9). There's a video on my channel showing the setup! Clients love it and the quality is good enough ;)
UPDATE! Mars reached out after seeing this video and their customer support was amazing! I just posted a video about it. Don't get me wrong, this monitor still has it's issues on the software side of things but based on my experience working with their team I am very excited to see what the M2 will look like!
I just purchased the the m1, but can't wait for the next gen. Camera tech is getting kinda crazy.
omg thank you so much, when you were talking about the lag i was like "yeah thats ok wireless from a cheaper monitor, thats to be expected" but omg when it clicked that it lags when its wired. you just saved me 500 bucks
Thank you for the honest review.
Thanks for being a real reviewer, really enjoy content made by people who have used the product in their own workflows. Keep it up!
Thanks, will do! Also I should state that Mars reached out after seeing this video and their customer support was amazing! I just posted a video about it. Don't get me wrong, this monitor still has it's issues on the software side of things but based on my experience working with their team I am very excited to see what the M2 will look like!
Damn 😞 sad to hear that. Do you think the Vaxis Atom 5 could be better?
Not sure I'll have to look into it. I will say though, Mars Customer Support team is next level. After they saw this video they reached out and really went above and beyond in trying to fix the situation. Just posted a whole video on it. This monitor still has it's issues but I have a good feeling that the next iteration of this monitor is gonna be a game changer.
@@kantolafilms Aside from the things you mentioned I wish they can also add a second battery plate for hot swaps
@@ArturoLauren Yeah that would be nice, especially with the slow boot up time
