Making a knife out of a computer
I made a knife out of a computer! All thanks to my good friend Nathaniel Klemm (who also has an awesome UA-cam channel, go check it out!) who's idea the whole thing was and he was also the one who made the scales I used, so if it weren't for him I definitely wouldn't be doing this. It went better and worse than expected but you'll have to watch the whole thing to find out why! Enjoy!

I carry and have modified various Cold Steel large knives. I didn't care for the Grivory on the Rajah II, so I made my own out of aluminum. Now I'm looking at my Vaquero XL Voyager. A bit too thick to carry in my back pocket (front pocket is for a Manix 2XL). I like the thickness a Recon 1XL and it uses the same hardware for the G-10 scales as the Voyager Vaquero, just shorter screws. Looking to put thinner aluminum scales on the Vaquero to get rid of the thick Voyager scales using the Recon hardware.

I want to build one for myself and I’m a 50 y/o woman. In fact i want to build a sort of “adult jungle gym.” Can i ask how to choose the rungs with the greatest weight support? Do you think I should take a crossbeam 4x4 and insert solid steel round stock in them (kinda how you would do with a wooden dowel? And unrelated. I can’t sharpen any blade whatsoever. I don’t get the concept. So do the majority of blades have a single bevel angle or a “v” shaped edge (i think they call this a Japanese edge?)? And how do you know what you’ve got? Do you use a magnifying glass? And i found a cool sickle saw in my shed yesterday and want to sharpen it. Do you think it should have a single beveled edge or a v shape? Lastly, and thank you so much for any help you can provide, I’m an absolute beginner. But i have a ton of tools. Can/should i use a bench grinder to sharpen my blades? Or do you recommend a tool that i can buy for sharpening blades that works? Is a stone sharpener the best method? I’ll buy anything you recommend but sharpener I’ve ever owned actually dulled my blades. Oh, and what does the leather strap people use to sharpen with do? You’re awesome and i subbed 🙏🙏🙏🙏

Well for the monkey bars, the only thing I can think of that's widely available is that black pipe they sell at Lowe's and Home Depot, it's used to make shelf brackets and table legs, stuff like that. I'm pretty sure that would work fine, just don't use conduit. The pipe I used was just laying around and I have no idea where you could buy more. And for sharpening, the vast majority of blades are "v" ground, or dual bevel, I know of one knife brand that does a lot of single bevel, but those knives are few and far between. As far as telling how sharp it is I would recommend watching a video on this (maybe I'll make one too) but you know how a cat's claw feels? That kind of sticky sharp feeling? That's what an edge should feel like when it's sharp, the only problem is, if there's a burr, a little wire of steel along the edge, it can feel that way and actually be hiding a fat edge underneath. That's where technique and a strop (piece of leather) come in. The technique is, no matter if you're using a bench grinder, belt grinder, diamond stone (which is the best) or a real whet stone, don't act like your buttering a piece of bread, dragging the blade, push the blade, if that makes sense, it should be the same motion as cutting but you just hit the edge of the knife or whatever blade you have, on the stone or grinder. But for a sickle saw, possibly a properly sized file would work? It depends on if it's a finesse tool or a brute force tool, if brute, file, if not, a fine diamond file (I bought one on Amazon) or diamond stone, I use one from Sharpal that I really like. It's a 325 and 1200 grit, works great. And as far as the strap or strop goes, that is specifically for cutting off that burr, you run the blade over it like you're sharpening and voila! Your burr is gone. If it was sharp enough BEFORE you stropped of course, made that mistake a few times. Hope that helps!

@@caleb-ray YOU RULE! I can’t thank you enough for your detailed explanation. YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY DO A VIDEO ON THIS AND MONETIZE IT. The problem with nearly all of the sharpening videos is that they are marketing a product either by getting an Amazon kickback or direct payment/free sharpener from the manufacturer. UA-cam has really become a very opaque platform in terms of reviews lately. UA-camrs are killing it and making tens of thousands a month. I had a channel in 2011 making at least $2,500/month. But now anyone can make triple that. And your content is preferred by UA-cam so you make a significantly higher ad percentage. UA-cam “how to” videos are “safe” for advertisers. UA-cam doesn’t have to worry about you saying something political or controversial that the brand paying UA-cam for ad placement might be angry about. Plus “how to” videos get TONS of viewers. Commentary channels are personality dependent. But How To videos draw non-UA-camrs like grandmas or grandpas who only want instructions and not entertainment. I no longer monetize because my channel is oriented more toward my art. But occasionally I’ll do niche how-to videos like how to build high power diode lasers or analog synths and i get significant viewers. If you want some advice just reach out to me. Thanks again 🙏🙏🙏🙏

You don't want a hair shaving sharp edge on a maul anyway. The sharper the edge the better it is at cutting but weaker it is to impacts. Which will deform the edge requiring sharpening more frequently. Mauls work by introducing shock into the wood at the edge to get it to crack apart. The wide wedge are just to assist in pushing the wood apart after it's cracked. A sharp edge like on a traditional axe is for chopping and cutting through wood. I would only go sharp on a traditional axe and use it to cut through woods that have a lot of fibers in the wood. Wood with a lot of fibers in the grain are resistant to impacts so you need to cut them. Since the axes your working on is a hybrid it comes down to personal preference and what you plan to use it for.

@@caleb-ray the variable speed is a great feature. you can buy an arbor extension if you need to push your wheels/work further away from the machine. On that note I actually swapped out the flanges(washers) and spacers, they are stamped steel and not balanced. Most hardware on these “cheaper” grinders are. You won’t notice it with a polishing wheel, but with wire wheels or stones you starts to pick up the vibrations from the runout.
