Hopefully some of this will interest and excite others to collaborate ideas and experience.
Hewing Bigtooth Poplar - 2020 Axe Cordwood Challenge (with a Harbor Freight Axe)
Hewing a 6"X6" timber from a Bigtooth Poplar log (Populus grandidenta). Once again using the Harbor Freight "Pittsburgh" brand 3.5# axe that I've used for all of the 2020 Axe Cordwood Challenge.

2020 Cordwood Challenge Rick
Переглядів 9294 роки тому
Once again participating in the Axe Cordwood Challenge. Decided to use a horrible axe from Harbor Freight to demonstrate that an axe will chop if it is sharp, no matter what you pay for it. This year I am limiting my cordwood cutting to a single rick, but I intend to participate in the hewing and axe-cut joinery challenges as well.
Goats! Farm Update
Переглядів 4294 роки тому
First video in a while, thanks for the folks who still remember Oxbow Farm! 2019 was a big and busy year for the farm and we made big progress and big changes. Unfortunately we didn't get much of a chance to document any of it on UA-cam due to hardware, software, and enthusiasm issues. One big change we made was to move away from raising cattle and switch to trying to raise some homestead milki...
Planting True Sweetpotato Seed
Переглядів 23 тис.5 років тому
In addition to growing potatoes from true seed (TPS) this year we will be growing some sweetpotatoes from true sweetpotato seed for the first time. Sweetpotato (Ipomea batatas) is one of the most nutritious and high yielding crops, right up in competition with potatoes themselves. Becoming self sufficient in sweetpotato production has been a goal here at Oxbow Farm for a long time. We have succ...
Flash Flood Cleanup
Переглядів 2895 років тому
Last fall the remnants of Hurricane Florence gave us a significant flash flood in the middle of the night on September 18th 2018. While our home and the farm fields were remarkably undamaged, the flooding in the creeks and on our road moved an astonishing amound of gravel, boulders and sediment. Along with all the natural debris there was an astonishing amount of man-made garbage that was washe...
First Harvest of 2019
Переглядів 7865 років тому
Harvesting our first vegetables for 2019, pac choi, senposai, mizuna, and horseradish. Its great to be harvesting fresh food again. I also mention that we typically only harvest horseradish on a few markets each year right before Passover in April. I should probably explain that sometimes we don't harvest or sell horseradish at all, since due to the irregular nature of the Hebrew calendar, Pass...
Early Spring 2019
Переглядів 4805 років тому
Just a quick look at what is growing around Oxbow Farm. Lots of stuff in growing in the greenhouse and one high tunnel is full of Senposai, Pac Choi, Kale, Tatsoi, Lettuce, Mizuna, and Komatsuna. Things are moving a little slower this year as the weather has been cool and cloudy for most of the late winter till now. Time to get fired up for the growing season and new projects on the homestead a...
Planting Onions for Seed - Seed Saving
Переглядів 1,5 тис.5 років тому
In 2018 we discovered a really useful open pollinated yellow onion variety called Dakota Tears. After our initial onion seeding turned out to be a terrible disappointment, we purchased seed of Dakota Tears from High Mowing Seed in a late order with some other things we needed, almost as an afterthought. This meant the onions weren't seeded into trays in the greenhouse until April, almost 2 mont...
Hewing White Pine - 2019 Axe Cordwood Challenge
Переглядів 2 тис.5 років тому
For the 2019 Axe Cordwood Challenge, Ben Scott has added several new “challenges” in addition to the firewood chopping challenge that has always been the primary focus. One of these new additional challenges was to do some hewing. Since hewing is one of my favorite activities to do with an axe, I was eager to do some. At some point in the last year a double-stemmed white pine fell across the cr...
A Bucking Strategy for the Axe Cordwood Challenge
Переглядів 2,9 тис.5 років тому
Since Steven Edholm from Skillcult.com started the Axe Cordwood Challenge, a lot of good videos have been created regarding axe usage and technique. I don't have a lot to add to that discussion typically. I did think that it would be worth demonstrating this log handing technique I find useful for controlling the log as it is being bucked, as I think it allows good control when you are bucking ...

Video documenting my rick of wood for the 2019 Axe Cordwood Challenge, plus a little discussion on why I don't want to make axe related video content anymore and my general frustrations with the "axe community". Making a Simple Campfire Tripod Rig
Переглядів 8585 років тому
This is a very basic blacksmithing project to make a simple set of hardware for quickly rigging a tripod for campfire cooking. There are many campfire tripod videos on youtube, and they mostly fall into two styles. One is a fully metal version with iron stakes with rings on the top for forming a tripod with a chain or trammel hook for the cooking pots. The other is a bushcraft style that uses t...
Grafting Apples- Successes and Failures.
Переглядів 1,8 тис.5 років тому
Over the past three years i have done a considerable amount of apple grafting. Starting as a complete novice grafter I've added several varieties to several wild trees and I am also in the process of topworking over some varieties we planted when we originally purchased the farm. My experience with grafting has entailed some successes and lots of failures. One early mistake I made was not pract...
TPS Tuber WEIGH-OFF with RECORD YIELDS !!
Переглядів 1,6 тис.5 років тому
This is a follow on video to our last potato reveal, in which the Sarpo Mira cross F2 seedling row was dug. It was clear that many of those seedlings were very high yielding, and likely to exceed the previous Oxbow Farm record for yield of a potato seedling grown from true potato seed (TPS). With the weather conditions being so wet for the second half of the summer and all the fall, the tubers ...

Yall PLEASE don't kill me. I happened upon this video in search of a way to make a healthier version of the store night tortilla hard shell. I've haven't watched the video completely. Can it be done using a blender.
❤❤VIDEO ❤❤great information ❤
Mine are purple? 😕
This would change the potato varieties wouldn’t it?
Felicitaciones
Got one tps out of 6 pots this year , I presume they have been grown with pollen inhibitors, so must have been one variety that was not altered. Pray for me , hope I can get good plants next year when I will get the next chance to try grow from seed for the first time. This video was good and helpful. Many thanks
General Mills Inc Why do you use TSP (Trisodium Phosphate) in some of your cereals? We appreciate your question. First, trisodium phosphate is a water-soluble salt that is used in a wide variety of food products. It is approved as safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. We use small amounts of trisodium phosphate in some of our cereals to help improve the texture, making every bite crunchy and delicious. Actually, the trisodium phosphate does its work in the dough stage, and then mostly dissolves as the dough is made into cereal, so very little - if any - TSP is present after the cereal is made. Do NOT use this in food or with food products. be informed!
12:00 is that an old galvanized water trough? Or is it tin? I am curious what kind of metal you used and the kind of refractory clay i see it lined with. Thank you
What a good eye. And this is only one beam, I can imagine building a barn
That's awesome
You should look into growing edible wild yams from bulblies
Grow like you would grow tomato or eggplant transplants first, then transplant the plants in the field. Mulch with straw or old hay. Fertilize the soil of cause. Sure the plants will spread on the mulch, but its not an issue.
I tried to get pollen from both a purple and Loowit seedling and found no pollen. I will try later in the day, but may have to find another variety for my limited space. To answer a question below: Crossing two varieties is done to get something new and unexpected as well as combining two or more desirable traits. One may produce larger potatoes and another have better flavor or texture or disease resistance etc., so by crossing the two some of the offspring may have the best qualities of both parents and none of their weaknesses.
Thanks and great work!
Well done with a standard axe and not a hewing axe. The only question I have is that it looked like you started in the think end of the log and not the thin end? Starting with the top part of the log gives less unwanted weed that goes in to the log and gives less even surface. Fresh cut log as you have is to prefer. I use to use a standard axe sometimes for the first round and then use the hewing axe for the final surface. If you want you can check my videos and see the very nice hewing axe I use.
Its like Meditation doing that all day
Superb sir
Great presentation.. AND accurate 😂
Just started to hoe my yard and hit into what i thought was a rock surprise surprise rusty axe head true temper perfect kelly works Jersey cant wait to restore it
Boer Jan is another potato breeder I enjoy watching.
Native plants are not invasive....the reason they are where they are, is because native people used them there... the process continues.....
Thanks for letting me know not to waste my time with TPS.
Planting from a tuber will produce a clone.
lol! Love the sock feet!
Two favourite moments here are 4:42 "this nonsense", and the part 9:52, relatable to any man, where in any situation we just start thinking about how we'd survive the apocalypse.
Doing this now Trying to transplant before they start doing that 😩
I've just ordered Rebsie Farholm book so will be looking forward to that..Thank you for sharing and this video..
Sorry Timmy, your tricycle has gotta go. 😉
That purple skinned, white flesh potato - market it as a "kitchen pot potato" if commercial growers aren't going to be keen on mass production. "kitchen pot potato"; a potato variety that people can grow in pots or grow bags at home, even in an apartment, for personal kitchen use.
Wished i was right there with you brother i loved that kind of work im too old now but keep it long as you. Can build a dozen houses like that
TSP 4 TPS 😎
I’m planning the same kind of thing, thanks for the footage. 😂 just manpower here.
Not sure if your even still on here but thanks for this, and your other "strategy" type videos. I tend use a boy's axe and more conventional bucking techniques but leaving a branch/brace to keep the tree from rolling around, and the log spinning technique when the situation calls for it, has definately improved efficiencey and made my life easyer.
How Paris?
I also really appreciate your discussion of the "low vernalization requirements" of Asian greens. Explains issues I had with seedlings bolting(!) when I tried to grow them for the first time last spring.
I bought seeds for senposai last year and haven't found as much info about it as I'd like so I really appreciate this video!
It’s truly sad that I found this channel years after he quit posting. Your content is valuable. Wish there was more of it.
Absolutely outstanding.
So many videos are ruined because of an overabundance of explaining safety. Regardless if you are talking about bushcraft, canning, fermentation, distilling, woodwork... that said, your approach to people saying it isn't safe is genius. Sir, you need steel toes or some other safety equipment just in case... I'll show you, I'll do it barefoot. Take the warning labels off. Everyone works at their own comfort level, enjoy what/how you are doing and allow others the same.
I cannot wait to plant these seeds

There is no need to use hay. Any organic material that will break down and provide nutrients, water retention and weed resistance is the way to go. Hay was what she had at hand but anything will work. If you want more detailed info try to find her books to get the full 411.
Want purple centered sweet potatoes
Thanks a lot man this video helped me a lot when making my own box bellow
If you use glass inside, the glass is a dielectric material, depending on what you piston use for a seal l, you can build up a static charge in the glass do to it being dielectric( it’s basically a capacitor. Inside the capacitor there are two metal conductive plates and a dielectric that insulates them from each other. When dc current, as applied the dielectric will polarize, retaining the charge for a given time, AC reaction on a capacitor is very different!) any how the point is be careful it could possibly effect sensitive life saving devices implanted within the body or attached to the body l!
Never even considered growing potatoes this way. Very interesting. Thanks for the video
I love watching these videos but why is it you just want dry potatoes... The waxy potatoes are the best all round potato because they don't fall apart and for me, they even taste much better... The thing about dry potatoes is, they soak up all the liquid or butter like a sponge causing you to have to use so much more and for a cook, that is not good. but to each his own. Thanks for sharing your potato journey.
I'm a little bit late for this video, but I'm realizing some of my tps seedlings are stress because are tuberazing and the stem are just about 1 inch height.
Doing TPS for the first time, from some potato berries that popped in may garden (rare). Very helpful info!
