The Art & History Museum is one of the biggest museum institutions in Belgium and is part of the Royal Museums of Art and History. Among the star attractions are the collections of Egyptian sarcophagi and Greek vases, the great mosaic floor from Apamea and the model of Ancient Rome. Particularly famous is also the collection of pre-Columbian art and another eye-catcher is the colossal statue from Easter Island. Among the collections not to be missed are the Mosan liturgical treasures, the tapestries, the retables, the glassware and the Art Nouveau figures. Indeed, some of the art treasures in this museum are right out of the top drawer.
Onderzoek & restauratie vh Sint-Jorisretabel / Recherche & restauration du retable de saint Georges
NL - Sinds april 2021, na drie jaren van onderzoek en restauratie, is het befaamde Sint-Jorisretabel (1493) van Jan II Borman opnieuw zichtbaar in het circuit Gotiek-Renaissance-Barok van het Museum Kunst & Geschiedenis. Het interdisciplinaire onderzoek, in samenwerking met het Koninklijk Instituut voor het Kunstpatrimonium (KIK), leidde tot onverwachte vondsten en bood een verklaring voor aloude mysteries. Zo kregen de prachtig uitgewerkte beeldengroepen na bijna twee eeuwen terug hun originele plaats in het monumentale topstuk, dat tegelijk zorgvuldig werd gerestaureerd. Dit project werd mogelijk gemaakt met de steun van de Koning Boudewijnstichting (Fonds René en Karin Jonckheere).
