Emile Zola first pub...

The qualities that made this legendary ballerina unforgettable, especially...

I knew Ellen Marie was an incredible human being with an enormous gift to call attention to the absolutely necessary awareness for the public to come to a place where we can vote for change, and take action to bring about change for the good of humanity. When I read "What she left behind" I was immensely affected, but when I read "The lost girls of Willowbrook" it truly hit home as there was a cousin in my family who was born severely affected by cerebral palsy, retardation, and other afflictions due to lack of oxygen at birth. His family took care of him at home until his very last months of life never considering institutionalizing him though doctors advised it. Watching this video reaffirms to me the need for universal healthcare. On a footnote, Ellen Marie graciously agreed to be a guest at the book club I was in and she generously answered all questions that she had answers for regarding her knowledge from her research about Willowbrook and her knowing how Dr Bronson was the main reason Willowbrook was closed. There was also acknowledgement of Geraldo Rivera who filmed the atrocity view and publically aired his documentary expose film resulting the the awareness of how people are treated in institutions - focusing on Willowbrook. This along with this UA-cam presentation is a catalyst toward getting us to universal health care and treating all people, especially those with differences with dignity and respect. Thank you to Ellen Marie for bringing this forward and thank you Dr Bronson for being the caring doctor you are who continues to champion the cause for treating people with the dignity and hopefully the care the/we all deserve.

I took her ballet class at Dance Theater of Harlem in 1970, following the move from the converted garage located on St. Nicholas Avenue & 141st Street to the company's present location. There were maybe seven students in the class. The suggestions that Miss LeClercq gave us concerning the execution of steps were individual. For me, she always stressed the correct use of the foot when executing tendu, and the importance of a good 5th position. She would wheel herself over to where I stood at the barre, adjust the hem of her dress, and then demonstrate with her hands. I finally achieved a perfect 5th position while preparing to go to Japan to dance in 1982. The image of her demonstrating in that way, and her tone of voice, had stayed with me for those many years. What a delight it was, watching this video, learning more about her dancing career and what led to her teaching at DTH.
