I had similar experience, I noticed that I spent more time to setup and debug issue than on playing. 2 years ago I bought SD LCD, luckily it was easy to sell it. Was sold in few days. Also pretty small screen and poor resolution, hard to play in any games where need to read text. Some games can not be run if they are from Epic store or repacks, sometimes it is playable, sometimes not, somwtimes need to reboot device, sometime reinstall... Sleep mode drains battery, so SD should be on charging all time. I would be happy if something changed, but overall experience it is not like it is advertised, it is more like I disconnect SD from charging, verify if my game could be easily playable today and maybe play 30 minutes, but not in bed, because it is hot and pretty loud. Once I started played F.I.S.T. on SD, noticed that battery can give me 40-60 minutes with max possible settings, than I continue playing on PC on big screen with ultra settings and was shocked how awesome picture is and how many details I lost on SD. Maybe I will buy Steam Deck 2, with better performance, better OS, software, less compatibility and instability issues and better screen. But now only PC.
nice
I do hope Retroid does not discontinue their 2S. I think that's a bit more ideal model to take around with you on the go considering the price point and having up to perfect N64/Dreamcast emulation is really more of a bonus for me. Additionally, I think the price has reduced a bit on the 2S, so it's definitely an easy recommendation from me now when it comes to 4:3 Android based handhelds.
So did they solve the sd card reader heating up problem?
I don't think they fixed it for the first generation ROG Ally. However, If I'm not mistaken the ROG Ally X no longer has that problem.
I’ve been hearing that they fixed it for the ally like if you were to go the z1 extreme they fixed it apparently I heard something about them fixing the fan curve in an update . Some other people said if you do have an older one and it hasn’t gone out you can save it by adding more paste to it . This is what I’ve heard don’t quote me
steam deck is for more advance players who like to have extensive control of their games , people who like indie games ,old titles and RTS over the new stuff. i know ppl who use both the SD and ally .
ally handles newer non steam games batter and yeah the deck is much better for RTS.
Thanks , good review and without silly background music and nonsense. 👍 Shame it appears to be more graphic than gameplay oriented, like a lot of games now.
Good video with reasonable arguments. I personally have no interest in the RP5. Mini all the way for me. I love my Mini. I wish it had a wider screen personally, but I wouldn't be willing to take that at sacrificing the form factor. That small size is key to me! With the above in mind, you and I obviously see things completely different. I will attest to agreeing with you one point however. I also feel hesitant to bring my Mini around with me. I love it so much and want to bring it to work with me, but I am so afraid of breaking it.
Saw the shirt. Can i assume you are a batman fan as i am?
@@TheTechUpdate-ui1fh caught me red-handed with the name of the bat on my shirt … so yes, you could say i’m on team batman too.. just without the cape (for now 😉 )
@ZeitgeistHomer awesome man. Good to meet a fellow fan😁
Awesome video man. You covered aspects that many don't well done and keep it up.😁
Would you consider it better than the rp5 if A. I already have an OLED Steam Deck and 2. I mostly want Ps2 and GC, and something I can put in my pocket easily.
The Sticks may protrude a bit but yes, if you want something pocketable and want to play ps2 catalog (even the harder to play games like ratchet and clank) on a small device, this device is excellent. I would suggest to get the screen protector though, since it will be rubbing in to whatever else you have in your pockets.
@ Ah thank you ill buy one as well!

Always happy to improve my language. I'm not a native english speaker. But please go ahead and suggest the correct pronunciation. Happy to learn.

Don't sweat it dude, the review video is fine. English is one of the most controversial languages there is. (Gone, Georgia for example)
@ZeitgeistHomer it's a hard g like in goat, not a soft g like in giant
@@SchizoDad I will try to remember. Thanks for the tip 🙂
I like OLED since the PS VITA cane out!
why would u buy a mini and complain about the screen size? Get RP5 then.
DID YOU SELL IT ALREADY? ILL BUY IT
It's already sold. Thanks though!
Why do you buy the mini and then complain about the size? I don't get it, this should have been obvious. For ex as I'm searching for a device that can play up to PS2, the RP5 is a no brainer compared to the mini.
Odin 2 mini is 🏆.
I don't get all the screen arguments. It plays up to ps2 generation which is 4x3 generally anyway. Most of the machines with bigger screens are 16x9 which means black borders to the left and right and the playable area comes out as roughly the same? Unless its psp someone is wanting to play i just don't see the issue
Yeah but you can still play modern games these things. Android games, cloud games like cloud, GeForce now. Worth getting the proper size that comes out this week
@@craigshandworld if that's the angle sure the rp5 is a better fit. If it's just retro gaming up to gen 6 then I really think the mini is the better fit, with the relative lack of borders. I think both machine fit a different criteria
@@treknobabble1701 a lot of people think PS2/Dreamcast are better on wide. At least the reviews and comments I see.
Whats wrong with borders on the top and bottom. I think a mini powerhouse is right up my alley. This Video made me buy one tonight…
@@rdizzo1313 itd absolutely a test unit. I'll r playing android games too Ike The GTA remasters as an example. So I think the bigger one will be better for me. But if somebody is strictly only playing up to PS2 then this could be perfect. Looks just a little small for me though. I'll wait for pocket 5 to reveal and decide between the 2
The problem for me is the screen, is just too small to appreciate PS2/GC/Wii and DC games. That generation of games have beautiful and detailed graphics, even more if you upscale them and that screen doesn't do justice to them.
Exactly!
This pointless video may have helped to sell a few more RP Mini's
not worth a video
Replace the SD cards with Something reliable, they will fail really quick
Can't you just turn the screen down?
Can you send it to Mexico? I want one 😢
Other than not being in your budget, most of the other reasons seem silly. Who complains that a device is too powerful? And worrying about taking care of it- retroid sells full front screen protectors, you can get a case, etc.
I appreciate your opinion. You make a valid point on the full front screen protector. However, being too powerful is only part of the argument and referring to only that part takes things out of context. The RP5 has the same chip and there I would probably not say it's too powerful.
Zeitgeist Homer Don't brag Iam pissed you fool
Boooooooooo!
Top performance is always not efficient. By being overpowered you get efficiency boost at lower performance level that you actually need
Does this mean longer battery life?
10 dollars max,lol on ebay.
I have a steam deck OLED but wanted something more portable, I was looking at the pocket mini but lots of people saying the same thing about the small screen. May go for the RP5 though I liked the idea of the 4:3 screen, but maybe the RP5 can do PSP and others better.
@@Vozael the rp5 still relatively small… and significantly smaller and lighter than the steam deck. on the verge of being pocketable, but not quite… if you want a 4:3 screen that can play psp then maybe opt for something cheaper like rp2s. I think it can play a significant portion of psp catalog.
@@ZeitgeistHomer The screen would be even smaller on a rp2 for psp.
ps2 games look great on this device. the screen real-estate takes up about as much room in our vision as an old tube tv we would have used back in the day. i love mine.
Exactly what I'm doing. These PC handhelds are great but I want a smaller dedicated unit for retro games. Pocket 5 will be very good. This mini still got great reviews. Proper size is still small and will be great for bringing more often and full of retro games. Plus, the ease of worrying because it's still a cheap unit. And we can still play all our modern games on the cloud services with it and android games
$100 usd
Buy the rp5 then
@@hakman239 I might 🙂
How about $50 cdn? Let me know :)
Lol
Sell it and get the Ayaneo Pocket Micro which is not "overpowered" tststs
i love mine 30$ best !!!

I use my Deck out of the box, no tinker, no external store (yet), I haven't encountered most of the issues that you mentioned here. 1. Gamepass has always been a Microsoft thing, I don't think it will ever work out of the box. You'll always have to tinker. Either get Legion Go, or Ally OR you install Windows on the Deck. I heard WIndows on Deck is good on LCD models, not so much on OLED. Haven't tried myself, so I don't know. 2. Ergonomics. Coming from Switch, I think it's good out of the box. I still struggle with the bumpers and the weight though. Otherwise, I think it's good; not excellent, but good enough. 3. Playing on TV. I heard the official dock has those issues, maybe get docks/USB-C PD hubs with HDMI output. They tend to work better. I use one from JSAUX without any problem. 4. Hassle-Free gaming; I admit I have only played No Man's Sky, Kingdom Come: Deliverance and Bear and Breakfast, only 3 games on the Deck so far (I got it in September, so not much time yet). I've seen people complaining about tinkering all the time but my experience on those 3 titles is pretty much hassle free. I'm curious what games you are trying to play on Deck. I'm planning to dual-boot with Windows for those games that's problematic, but so far I haven't found a reason to among my game libraries.
That’s pretty obvious that Steam Deck is not for Game Pass Games… Maybe you should have look out for it before buying it and then complain in a video… Just my opinion
😂❤ sounds like a you problem bro i love my deck
Can you use the ps5 controller to its full potential? Or is there any feature that doesn’t work on the steam deck?
I've only tested the xbox controller with the Steam Deck, so I'm not sure. Allthough, I doubt that the haptic feedback will work.
Steam deck is great but really it has so many things to tinker with that we end up not playing so much haha 😅
After seeing the pocket mini preforms I definitely want the 5 the mini is just to small..
Fair, but for a compromise and from a company that hadn't made these before a couple years, it was impressive
Absolutely impressive indeed!
I do agree with the ergonomics part, if I need heavy use of the R and L bumpers I have to get awkward with the grip, and I don't have tiny hands.
Glad to read I'm not the only one. Personally I would love to see a Steam Deck mini. Same specs but a bit smaller and lighter and a bit more grippable. You?
@@ZeitgeistHomer Depends what tradeoff we would have to do to get this SD mini, I'm not entirely sure they could cram touchpads on a smaller form factor. But sure, I could see myself using something smaller. It has to hit a specific footprint though. Having a switch size doesn't really make it more portable in my opinion. I'd rather have something more PSVita XL size. That being said : I think the shoulder button issue could be solved by making the triggers a bit shorter vertically starting from the top, allowing the shoulder buttons to go a little more in the back of the device. I frankly don't get the shape of the R and L bumpers at the top. They only make sense if I hold the steam deck with my ring and pinky fingers on the back of the device, and put my indexes at the top of the bumpers, and middle fingers right behind on the triggers. Otherwise it doesn't make much sense, but this grip isn't suitable for such a heavy device imo.
The same, also dont like position of right stick, for me it should be lower than button (like xbox or ps4).
Of course any hand held gaming device is a compromise. Nothing beats the comfort of a xbox or ps5 controller. Nothing beats the precision and flexibility of a keyboard and mouse.
And nothing beats the raw power of a high-spec gaming rig. But to have even a modicum of all those features integrated into a handheld package? That is a banger of a selling point and revolutionizes how--and where--we can game. Especially for those of us with hectic lifestyles.
No it's not hassle free, you need to be pretty tech savvy to get this shit working right.
Don't do it if your'e lazy. Tutorials render your comment invalid.
I'm not really that computer savvy and 95 percent of my games ran without issue by just downloading them and running them
I bought a steam deck and I'm wondering why it would be best to play Steam games on it DUH 🤔 😂😂😂😂
The steam deck probably slides out of your hands because you have some of Diddy's baby oil on them 😂😂😂
AMD APU was a great choice and a 800p screen. 25-45 FPS at 720p on Cyberpunk with FSR is very playable. Bottles Linux app for me is useful for playing FitGirl repacks and PC game ports. And PS3 emulation is quite viable as well. My only issue was making a desktop-gamepad configuration layout. Heroic Game Launcher lets you import your Epic Games and GoG library. Desktop mode is a big upside to people who are on a budget (yar ho ho) or like to jailbreak
Thanks for the tips. Personally I try to avoid installers that may compromise my systems. Whats your favorite game for the steam deck?
I'm considering buiying a Steam Deck and this video gave me a lot of usefull information and things to consider.
I'm happy to hear that! Hope you can make an informed decision.
Everything he said you can't do, you can easily do following a few youtube guides. Emudeck is easy to install for emulators and decky plug in loader let's you install any game store or things like game pass you want.
steam and the deck are completely open. You can install any store game, any OS. Either way Valve cares about the gamers and no other does.
Yes, it's a great platform!
Emudeck and decky plugin let me do everything he struggled with easily
Unfortunately, making something open does not mean they care about gamers and "nobody else does"... it just means its completely open.
This is just what I was looking for, thank you!
My pleasure!
If the RP5 was originally going to be 6GB what the hell of advancement would there have been of the RP5 mini apart from being a little smaller 😂
It was going to be the same internals, but just a different form factor. The price difference is also only $20. Do you think a lot of people are willing to pay $200 for a device with such a small screen (RP5Mini)?
@@ZeitgeistHomer hm not sure about that! But I've just ordered the RP5 ...wish me luck!
@@tinklegaming2298 Offcourse, Good luck! I think it can be a fun device to have!
