What a great debate. Even today, in 2024, we continue to grapple with the same questions and dilemmas. As the current system of Western domination begins to seriously unravel, we see that the reaction in the centers of white power has been anything but pretty. Of course, I admire Dr. Welsing’s brilliance, and in many ways, posterity has vindicated her views. Today, we see Black men and women in positions of power, carpet bombing other non-white people in the name of white supremacy, all while believing they do it in the name of democracy. Many of these individuals, as Dr. Welsing suggests, define Black empowerment in terms of access to resources provided by a system that continues to be one of white domination. They believe that being allowed to enter this system means they belong within it, and they view this as freedom and choice. In my opinion, they are careerists who have disconnected the question of emancipation from the broader context in which the fight for emancipation necessarily takes place. By doing so, they have become useful idiots for a system that still oppresses the majority of people of color, not only in the United States but also worldwide. On the other hand, particularly regarding the subject of sexuality, I think Dr. Poussaint raised some issues that highlight the complexity of the topic. While I definitely agree more with Dr. Welsing’s general argument, I also think that human sexuality and mating need to be viewed through multiple dimensions. I do not believe that the solution lies in preventing people from having sex or relationships with those of other races or ethnic groups. Of course, this is not what Dr. Welsing suggests, but even attempting to remove ourselves from such encounters is difficult to achieve. In the end, we might end up policing people’s sexuality, which would be as repressive as the system of white supremacy itself. Nuance is necessary here. While all relations, including sexual and sentimental ones, are necessarily mediated by power and thus, unavoidably political, there should still be room for free will. This debate could easily be framed within the perennial philosophical dilemma of free will versus determinism, with Dr. Welsing emphasizing-if not absolutizing-the role social forces play in determining our behavior, while Dr. Poussaint emphasizes our capacity as free agents to make decisions. The question of which perspective should take precedence, or how to balance both positions, is a larger-than-life conundrum. However, I believe that whatever we decide to do with our sexual or romantic lives (and we should be free to choose), we will be better equipped to handle the inevitable conflicts if we are fully aware of the power dynamics we are entering. As my father once said to me when I was entering an interracial marriage: “Beware of the fact that she may never fully understand many aspects of your struggle in life, so, in many ways, you will be alone.”
