I began learning to play fiddle late in life, after never having played an instrument before. I knew at this stage in my life, I would never become a great player; I just wanted to be a competent player, and to enjoy making music. I'm now in my 14th year of my fiddle journey and that inner shame critic has always been a constant and mean companion. After years of lessons and diligent practice, I can play in tune with correct rhythm (I play mostly traditional Irish tunes), but I still have trouble gathering up the nerve to play with other amateur session participants. I've finally gathered the courage to get out there and play more frequently in social situations (for years my teacher has been encouraging me to do so), and "the liar" is finally beginning to lose its power. Thank you for addressing and giving insight to such an important topic.

Suzuki Violin Method Books work great with Mandolin. It's tuned the same way but it's easier to play because of the frets and you get to use a Pick.

Thank you for this message. I needed this today. I love singing, but I live in a place where people value silence on a unreachable level. I am never quiet enough, but I release stress through singing and I even sing and make noises while I sleep 😂 I would really love to move soon, so I can unlearn the patterns of thoughts, feelings and behaviors linked to shame. I would love to free that inner musician, and I will. Thank you for this reminder to work hard for that, and to stop shaming my inner musician in the meantime 🙏🏻🎶✨
