Soundscapes - @kinotone Sparks + Ribbons [feat. Compression vs. Saturation and Unreal Player]
The Timber Owls presents: "Soundscapes" - Miniature sonic explorations using gear, equipment, and stuff I have lying around. Not really a demo, not really a review, just a quick adventure into uncharted aural territory.
In this exploration I pair two potent pairings from the Minnesota-based Kinotone, whose pedals are engineered with precision, tact, and a whole heap of brain power. Just a few quick sounds that can be had from stacking these two without even getting that deep into the features of each pedal.
Prior to the newest firmware update in Ribbons, I had not experienced the Saturation settings, as it required midi messages to be sent to the pedal but now it is available to switch on the fly, so I thought I would showcase it here for any curious companions. There is also a quick sample of the new "unreal player" touch mode on Ribbons.

Rick Turner Guitars Hot Humbucker set quick improvisation
Переглядів 394 місяці тому
A quick improvisation on my vintage Ventura LP copy that's loaded with a set of Rick Turner Guitar Company hot humbuckers. Running clean into the Old Blood Noise Endeavors Dark Light for all the reverb ambience out to the Marshall, and that's it. I tried several structured demos of these, but messing around with no goal for 3 minutes ended up being a better representation of myself and these pi...

TARK AUDIO 144 Tape Machine Emulator Demo - A Preamp/Boost/Distortion/Fuzz and more!
Переглядів 1,3 тис.Рік тому
Today we're looking at the 144 by @tarkaudio. It's "Tape Machine Emulator" and what that means is it's something of a preamp based on the circuitry of an old cassette tape machine. It's got a JFET preamp and an active 2-band EQ that can be pushed into extreme overdrive and distortion, much like overloading a mixing channel strip. In this demo, I briefly run through some of the sounds, and show ...
Asynchronous Loop with @kinotone Ribbons
Переглядів 259Рік тому
Here's a short little video of me experimenting with the asynchronous 4-track looper on the Kinotone Ribbons. Loop 1 was made by simply playing some notes, then reversing the loop, then playing some more so some notes ended up forwards then backwards. Then the loop was sped up to transpose it an octave up, giving it a music box-like quality. Loop 2 is more of the same, but obviously not synced ...

Not really a demo, not really a review, just a quick adventure into uncharted aural territory. Red House Electronics/NativeAudio Mint Drive Overdrive Demo

A not so quick and not so flashy demo of the Red House Electronics Mint Drive. Red House Electronics was the original name of the current company NativeAudio, and the Mint Drive was their first pedal. Rick Turner Guitars Model 1 Mod - Series/Parallel Humbucker

Here's a quick video I made showcasing the mod I did to my Rick Turner Model 1 Guitar. It allows the humbucker to have both coils in parallel, in addition to having the standard series and coil cut configuration. Apologies for the video being out of focus for the entire talking portion. PLEASE NOTE: This mod is not to be taken on by a novice and choosing to do so yourself will certainly void an...
The Timber Owls - Drain Me - NPR Music Tiny Desk Contest Entry 2023

My 2023 entry for @nprmusic's Tiny Desk Concert Contest. An original song entitled "Drain Me" from the forthcoming Timber Owls release, re-imagined for the occasion. Now, almost 3 years later it serves as a reflection on that feeling that some...

NativeAudio Two Medicine Delay Pedal Sound Demo
Переглядів 1032 роки тому
A quick sound demo of the Two Medicine delay pedal by NativeAudio. Two Medicine is a preset-capable digitally-controlled analog-voiced delay pedal. That's a mouthful, but it's an incredibly versatile, yet simple pedal that sounds great in any context. In this video, I run through the presets that come shipped with the pedal and mess around with some sounds. It never gets too wild (meaning no se...

I love this song I’ve been wanting to play it on my guitar, but I couldn’t find out how. Do you mind sharing what tuning you used?
@@kei-2011-d1l hey there, I'm not exactly sure what the actual tuning is, but this was what sounded close to me. I used DADF#AD (open D) for it.
thank you, sir
I tried it sounds just like it thank you!
Dang @thetimberowls! I'm loving these sounds so much. I've never dialed in that flanger sound before - so good. Thanks a lot for making / sharing this!
@@kinotone Thank YOU for making these inspiring devices! It's hard to get a bad sound out of either one.
Damn that saturation update is incredible. I can’t believe how much is packed into ribbons!
I know! I had never tried the saturation before since it required a midi message, but being able to do it on the pedal itself is a game changer. It's a very usable overdrive.
Love that dynamic trem sound!
@@nerdebynature thanks! Sometimes regular trem can get boring to me, so it's super cool to find something that can follow my dynamics.
thanks for this demo!
Thanks for watching! Hope I did it justice.
If you're ever interested in selling it, please let me know! I've been looking for the red model
Well done!
Really good thank you for this great demo
Hey this rules! The separate output for the single string pickups is great! I did something similar with an old Jagmaster I got cheap a while back. I got a two-string pickup from Ubertar housed in a single coil casing, both strings have dedicated on/off switches and then I run through a volume, a tone, and then out of their own output jack. I love how simple your solution is though! Can I ask where you got your single bar pickups? I haven't been able to find many other people out there making them besides Ubertar.
I’m actually eyeing up these myself. Did you play around with orientation of both pickups much before landing on that layout?
I did. I liked the sound of the rail when closer to the neck. It was a minimal difference, but it was more noticeable when running both rails together.
@@davidishizaka7784 good to know! Thanks. I’m surprised you haven’t had more views. I guess not everyone appreciates mad scientists.
I love your playing, it’s super rock+/alternative and I am super into it, The video is also great and I got a very good grasp on both pedals, keep this up! My only gripe with the video is that the text is a little too fast for me to
@@camenskycameron8413 thanks for watching and saying so! I admit text timing is not my strong suit, but I'm going to try and be less text heavy in the future. Appreciate the feedback!
This is a realllllly good cover!
I considered building myself a Telecaster Deluxe 72 style guitar time ago, with a shell pink body, tortoise pickguard, a tremolo and loaded with p rails. I thought I could get a lot of sounds from the p rails but what you did is crazy man, such an inspration. I already have to electrics which can do everything I need but... the GAS xD
who makes that Jag?
I did! It's a Squier Jaguar Bass Body I threw a guitar neck on and some pickups. It's a partscaster for sure.
Sounds very nice. 👍
How do peeps get there hands on a model 1 average price is like $4000-$8000😹
Yup, it's a commitment, but I had dreamed about having one for 20 years, so I budgeted and saved and made it happen. Definitely worth it for me, but I understand it isn't for everyone and that's cool too!
Bro this is so good! How did this have no likes?!😮😮
Thank you for saying so! It's been a minute since I did this, but I'm still grateful you found it. ✌
That's a pretty guitar! I dig your cardigan and SNES in the background too 👍
Thank you! I'm sure my videos are full of easter eggs, which are really just do to poor camera placement. But I'm super excited to hear what Reverse Mode C inspires you to make!
I never get tired of your playing! This pedal does the work of a half dozen pedals I'd have to employ to chase this sound! Excellent demo.
Thank you for saying so! I know, it does a lot of things at once and balances it all so nicely. A hefty price tag, but dang worth it for these sounds.
I love their boost I got it some months back and it sent me spiraling into a kgr hole I now have the compressor and Lollar edition Arare as well. They sound great and I’m a sucker for the construction process as well
Aw yeah! Very cool. I agree, their enclosures are incredibly cool, and only surpassed by their amazing sound quality. The compressor is on my list. How are you liking it?
I haven’t had many compressors so I don’t have a wealth of knowledge to compare it against, but it’s easily the best I’ve used and helped me realize how helpful a compressor can be, it’s definitely sticking around
Complicated as hell awesome though
That was a great tone demo !!. You can understand why Lindsay Buckingham said it was the only guitar he ever needed !!..🎸🎵 🎸
Thanks for saying so! I definitely agree. It can do so much and sound so good. Now if only I could play it as good as Lindsey!
Bruh I was just strolling through covers of my fav songs and came across this, fell in love with it, tried to look it up assuming it was a song then realized you made this holy shit! Please make this a song
That's sick you found me like that. Thanks for the kind words. This pedal in particular has made me want to make some songs like this, so I might just take your advice!
@@thetimberowlsband dude that shit was heaven like fr
What guitar is that?
It's an OOPEGG Trailbreaker Mark-I! Super cool made in Japan offset.
Awesome demo, mate! 👍🏻
That's high praise coming from you!

Loved the feel of this one!
Thanks! Love when the vibe of a pedal can inspire something unique.
sick!
I know you are, but what am I? Thank you kindly!
Great review and absolutely love these pedals! I’ve been collecting effects pedals for years now and of the dozens I own the KGR are by far my favorite! Awesome Job!
Thank you for the kind words! I agree, KGR are amazing and not only are they unique enclosures, but they sound stellar! I'm excited to check out more of their pedals. ✌
Absolutely loving these tones and the formatting of this video is top notch!
Thank you! Means a lot coming from you. 🙏
What kind of pots?
The independent volumes for the neck and bridge are 500k iirc. And the stacked tones are both 1-meg linear but with different caps.
My mind can’t keep up with this, but it sounds really cool
man I would love to hear some dirty fuzz tones on this
Please do a video of you rotating the pickup.
That's a great idea. I haven't actually tried to see if there is a huge difference in tone, but I will definitely see if it does!
Sweet sounding mod ... don't know if I could ever bring myself to drill into my Turner M1, but I would certainly buy one if they came that way. Thanks for sharing ...
It was a harrowing operation for sure, but two coils in parallel is kind of a sound I can't live without. But sounds like a good excuse to get a new M1 with one installed at the factory! 👍
Great sound to wake up to

Cool video!! Thank you so much !!
This fucking rocks hard dude, I lovveeeee this demo! ❤🎉🎉🎉 the T120 use is so tasteful but the two medicine was great too
Thank you! I measure all pedals by how well they work with delay. Lol. Delay4lYfE!
Really liking the playthrough at the beginning! The pedal sounds quite good!
Thanks! That's about as polyrhthymic as I can get!
Sounds so good, David!
Thank you! That really means a lot coming from you. ❤🍞

Nice sounding pedal and nice playing!
sounds so good!
Thank you for watching and saying so! If you and Russ ever want to borrow any NativeAudio stuff, you know where to find me! ❤
i like your jaguar dude, its really cool
I’ve gone for something similar, although I wish I had seen this before! I chose not to have the ’coils in parallel’ option which might have been a mistake. I have the 3 switches 2 set up the mode of the prails and the other controls the phase. Then it goes to a freeway switch to choose which pickup, or both in series or parallel. I was considering adding an active tone circuit, but now I am considering the passive one you have. How useful do you find it? Also love the single pole idea, definitely have to steal that! Awesome work.
Thanks for watching! Honestly, ywah the 2 coils in parallel is probably my favorite sound, especially on the neck pickup. More useful than the passive stacked tone is actually the ability to bypass it completely. I like a really bright tone, and being able to get the pots out of the circuit is useful.
Thanks for the comparison of these, and also what you played with them sounded sooo good!!
Thank you for watching! I'm about to watch your new short too! :D
This might be a reach, but I'm planning to do a very similar mod to my kc jaguar (which is why I looked up "p rail coil split jaguar"), and I was wondering, since you've done it already and seem to be good at electronics (I'm not), if I could send the wiring diagram I'm gonna make up for you to look over when I'm done? If not, that's cool too, just figured I'd ask
I could definitely try, though I myself am not an expert: just do lots of trial and error. But feel free to: email me at the contact in the bio or reach out on instagram. ✌
@@thetimberowlsband Ok I'll try to draw it up and send it later this week. Unfortunately, I don't think it will look as neat as the one you did. Thank you so much
