Karri (1947)
(Silent film) In the Pemberton area of Western Australia, we are shown the selecting and felling of giant Karri trees, many of which are hundreds of years old. These trees are among the largest in the world. After felling, the huge logs are cut into more managable lengths, then dragged off to the mill to be cut into useable hardwood timber. We see the logs being cut into planks and sections of all sizes, to used mainly in the building industry in Western Australia. While it is distressing to see these old growth Karri forest cut down, the relatively small usage of this resource at the time paled into insigificance in the 70's when wholesale destruction of these magnificent trees began for the production of woodchips for the cardboard box making industry in China. To see these ancient trees turned into cardboard boxes is nothing short of a tragedy.
This film was shot on Kodachrome "I" film, and is quite contrasty, but the color has stood up fairly well. The soft focus is on the actual film, not due to the capture process. According to a printed label on the inside of the film can, it was made by the Education Dept. of Western Australia. Though it was quite a bit amateurish in production, it was probably made by teachers on a zero budget one long weekend :-)

I believe the location seen in this film is Barrow Island. This 16mm film was produced by WAVE (West Australian Visual Education) in 1969.

Wow I thought those bus stops were from the 90s as I'm an '86 model and remember them vividly from having one a few houses down on my road. My cousin ollied off one of those on his skateboard and snapped his deck, almost his ankle. Ahh the memories.

Those were the days when this country was once self sufficient in petroleum products with Barrow Island and the oil rigs in Bass Strait and we had our own merchant ships to carry it, I can remember such ships, Australian flagged and crewed: CELLANA, BP ENDEAVOUR, MOBIL AUSTRALIS, ESSO GIPPSLAND, AMANDA MILLER, R.W. MILLER, NANCY HEATH, P.J. ADAMS, JOHN HUNTER, EXPRESS, H.C. SLEIGH and SOLEN to name a few, all gone now, foreign ships doing the work and we pay for all this at the bowser!

How I long for these days. No sign of the barren tasteless wasteland of the souless nanny state it has become. Only one policeman in sight. No mounted cameras watching the people and number-plates of the cars. No signs with rules upon rules we are now forced to adhere to. A bygone relaxed care-free era where freedom was enjoyed and no police breathing down your neck.

No way! In 1972 we moved to Perth from the farm in Dalwallinu for school. We had the first house built in Greenwood. Back then it was known as Greenwood Village and the bus into town was 359. Prams on the back of the bus, kids used to stand for adults, the sound of the old ticket machines, bus drivers carried cash. We all knew each other back then. Have we evolved?

I agree that the Perth in this video is gorgeous, just keep in mind that the people reminiscing over and missing the 'good old days' (and how it's better than the present day) are the same people who were around for or even driving those changes that have lead to the modern Perth. You can still find beauty and community in Perth today, and I hope there will be more efforts for preservation and restoration in the future.

Aha, so those guys in uniform who shooed people away from sitting on forbidden ledges or stopped people enjoying themselves were around back then too. I remember in 2004 they were around everywhere, if you swung on a bicycle rack as a kid, one of those guys would appear all of a sudden and challenge you. Don't get that these days thankfully, the world is more free. I wonder where those guys went though?
