John Cassavetes' Husbands - Deleted Scene
Переглядів 6 тис.13 років тому
This deleted scene from Cassavetes' Husbands has one of my favourite Cassavetes moments. This is from a BBC "Making of" documentary on the film, which features more deleted scenes, the cast at work and interviews. Yes, I'll be uploading the entirety of it soon. This deserves to be seen publicly but hasn't been given a release, nor was it brought out as a special feature with the recent Husbands...
John Cassavetes - "Television Sucks!"
Переглядів 171 тис.15 років тому
In this outtake from a 1978 television interview, Cassavetes discusses his film Opening Night for a while, and builds into a terrific rant on movies and movie audiences. This is a great example of Cassavetes' way with words, his dislike of people who live only for the approval of others, and his anger at the low popularity of his later films (especially Opening Night and Killing of a Chinese Bo...

Cassavetes explains why not everyone likes his film-making style. Filmed while promoting Opening Night. Apologies for the big text in the middle of the screen. Don't blame me, blame MacDonald! Check out www.notfilmschool.com

Cassavetes was a genius. When I started NYU film school in the early '90s, most of my fellow students knew nothing about Cassavetes. Granted, most of his films were not easily available on video then, but he was well-known as an actor and they hadn't seen any films he acted in. This led to an expression I often repeated: "This is what they let into NYU?" I also noticed that the other students had no fire in their bellies - film is art and artists are passionate. Look how passionate Cassavetes is here. Did he have a few drinks in him? Perhaps but he was totally lucid and coherent and obsessed with art. TV sucks now but back then there were actually a lot of good shows on the air. And he was right about "Opening Night," which is his best film after "Husbands."

Apparently this moment (right after Opening Night bombed) was Cassavetes at his most depressed. He was basically convinced that he lost and that he would never be able to fund another movie.

5:15: Different Time. A guy says he likes 10 yr olds. Shocking? Duhh Yeah! But not as quick as to compared Now: Just Wrong! + That's Right! But right or wrong for whom? 10 + 13 yr olds? Interesting? We need less anxiety/pitchforked + more nuanced approach to dialogue in this very important subject. But, Cassavetes was just making a very facile remark, I think. What do you think?

Cassavetes resented the time he spent in television, even his own series "Johnny Staccato". While the critics acclaimed it, "Staccato" only lasted one season. For the most part, he thought doing TV was a necessary evil, allowing him to make enough money to move over into directing his own films.

One man can make difference. Finally one man tells hollywood what it is and now we can see more of what he was talking about. Tv sucks movies suck everything about the business sucks. You will meet the most uncreative people in the business. It’s all bullshit. And that’s why most of them need to get the fuck outta there and start putting in some people who are qualified to get into the minds of the people for two hours and enlighten them in some way. Some people think it’s just movies no it’s shaping the minds of the young so I think that’s an important profession which should take lives more seriously then just another behind on the seat.
