Green Island Ficus Repot
Repotted this Green Island Ficus. In 2022 I cut this back from stock material to make it a shohin sized tree. Getting closer to the goal every year.

Kishu Shimpaku Juniper Repot (2)
Переглядів 6368 місяців тому
Repotting this Kishu Juniper that was initially repotted two years ago. The pot is a little small and had already become rootbound. It was becoming difficult for water to pass through the soil so I decided to repot this tree and take a little off the sides and bottom. You can see the original video of this tree by looking at the playlist below for Kishu Juniper #1
Future Bunjin - Shimpaku Juniper
Переглядів 3518 місяців тому
I got this tree last year. It was severely pot bound but I had received it in mid-summer during one of the hottest years ever. I did a quick slip pot into larger soil to try and get it healthier. It responded with a lot of nice green growth. Now that it is vigorous I've reduced the roots and fit it into this small pot. If all goes well I will style this tree this year once it has had some time ...
Mini JBP - A Tight Squeeze
Переглядів 7108 місяців тому
Jamming this small and simple JBP into a handmade pot. This tree was stick straight when I purchased and cut to the lowest branch. More of an experiment for my future pines to see how well this reacts to such a small amount of room to grow. Let's see what happens :)

Itoigawa Juniper Reduction and Shari Work

This is the continuation of work on the same tree from this video last year ua-cam.com/video/oOcq_iVptNg/v-deo.html and the video prior to that ua-cam.com/video/Wuo6zU_seyQ/v-deo.html I had originally left this long leggy branch on in an attempt to prevent the foliage from going juvenile on the tree. It seems to have worked a little. Now reducing the branch doing a little shari work and trimmin...
Willow Leaf Ficus Cutback and Repot
Переглядів 125Рік тому
Cutback this Willow Leaf I've been growing out after a trunk chop in 2020. I placed it into a cut-corner pot I made last year. It's not the greatest looking pot but it will be fun to use for this. The camera overheated during filming and I lost a section of footage.

A quick walk-through of the 52nd Annual Austin Bonsai Society Show. A great selection of trees were displayed this year.
Spring Pruning
Переглядів 212Рік тому
Trimming up some of the spring growth on this maple and some zelkovas. I let the maple push this year instead of pinching buds. Next year the buds will be pinched before they extend. The four zelkovas were cuttings I struck. I'm pruning now to encourage budding and branching. My hope is that these will become brooms down the line.
Trimming and Striking Cuttings - Corkbark Chinese Elm
Переглядів 148Рік тому
This tree was in need of some trimming to prevent the top branching from becoming too thick. I thought I might strike some cuttings to create some tiny corkbark elms in the future.
Japanese Maple Thread Graft

This was a twin trunk project but alas one trunk withered and died. In this video I'm attempting to thread graft two more trunks in an attempt to make a triple trunk project.

Repotting this itoigawa juniper. This is the tree from an earlier video. ua-cam.com/video/KPa2s4OEJh8/v-deo.html I think eventually I will make this tree from 2 of the smaller branches on this tree removing all the rest. These upper branches got fat quick!

    I purchased a motezuma cypress bonsai a couple years ago and the growth is starting to get a little out of hand. I’m just scared to prune/style it. Thanks for the inspiration!

    I just watched your follow-up video with the little seedlings coming out of the 2 pots with all those great roots. It seems like a young guy could go into business just starting these little trees like you have done and wiring them in the first year. I'm inspired to do the same, but at 70 years of age I know that I'll be lucky to ever seeing a "finished" bonsai tree. But, hey, it's the journey isn't it? Good luck, buddy.

    If I am going to use the pot, do you think I need to gold leaf the inside and bottom of the pot ? I have a Bigei that was broken in transit (replaced by seller) and I used gorilla glue to piece them together. I am thinking of putting another layer of JBweld on the cracks to fill up some missing parts. Can I use the JB as an adhesive to the gold leaf? Is it wet enough for the gold leaf to stick?

    • @GertsBonsaiLog
      @GertsBonsaiLog 8 місяців тому

      Sorry for the late reply CTREBC123 -- I think I would put gold leaf on the inside as well, just for a more uniform look. It is definitely cosmetic and doesn't affect strength at all, but since you'll already be placing the leaf elsewhere I would just do it at that moment. Would love to see the result w/ the Bigei pot!

    • @GertsBonsaiLog
      @GertsBonsaiLog Рік тому

      Thanks Cesar! These were in two different soils. The first was just lava and pumice - the second was in 100% pumice both soils seemed to do well. I've found over the years that if you can cut an old 1 gallon can down to about 3 inches and then stuff the cuttings in together tightly it works really well. I cut these from the mother plant in May 2022 - so they were in these containers for just about 7 months. It was actually included in this video if you want to see the process ua-cam.com/video/oOcq_iVptNg/v-deo.html
