not exactly... I did a cover for thriller and I realized a few things: 1- MJ always star to compose on bass lines! and follows the snare! 2- this bass line walk on a specific music scale so you can add some instrument making chords giving the impression that the bass is changing when never doesnt it! 3- when trying to make something complex... is only 1. for example when you hear "Thriller" you can appreciate how the guitar loop add complexity with the voice line! then is the hats follow by a clap that make you dance in the break down (personally the most impressive part). 4- usually its a very simple contruction, with guitar and a minimoog doing marimbas on thriller, and guitar and string sections in Billie Jean that gives you the spicy stuff!!
