Savage 220 | 50 Yard Ammo Shoot Out
Last range day I was able to get the new rifle out for a quick shoot. The process of fine tuning it for the upcoming season is in full swing, but before I can begin to dial things down - I need to test a few slugs to see how they group. Sending three round groups down range in a variety of ammo brands to see which ammo will come out on top.

why are you shooting rifled slugs out of a rifled barrel? Shouldn't sabot's be used? Just curious. Hope to learn something new
I would like to get a savage 220 shotgun
Odd, so many complaining about using foster slugs in a rifled barrel. Why not??
You really need to do your research before you share the wrong info on the internet. No rifled slugs in a rifled barrel they are rifled to give the effect of rifling in a smooth bore barrel.
WTH would you shoot a rifled slug from a rifled barrel?
Try the 3" Accutips. They are more accurate than the 2 3/4
What scope is that
What scope is that?
Can u shoot rifled slugs in that?
Just sold mine. Had a stainless camo I bought new over a decade ago. Didn’t shoot the greatest till I floated the barrel and bedded it. After the accuracy mods. I could get Remington 3” accutips to all touch at 100 yards pretty consistently. About a 3/4” group. All other saboted ammo at the time was around 1 1/4” to 1 3/4” groups after bedding. I'd tell you to do the same. It will definitely tighten up your groups. I got better groups at 100 than you did at 50 after bedding. Before bedding I was WAY over 2moa...closer to 3
Nice review. Where did you get those target holders ??
what scope are you using?
firefield rapidstrike 1-6 x 24 great scope btw
You are running rifled slugs through a rifled barrel? That is a big no no. Always match your ammo to the gun you are shooting
You are supposed to use sabot slugs in a rifled barrel not rifled slugs those are for smooth bore barrels
This is what you get if you're in a shotgun only area for deer but want to get a bit longer range than a smooth/normal shotgun barrel with rifled foster slugs. The 300gr sabots also shoot very flat at 200 yards. After sighting in at 50 yards the hornady SST 300gr sabot slugs shoot dead on at 200 yard. This will group like that last group all the way out to 200 yards with the right sabot. We got a group with all shots touching/nearly same hole at 175 yards. A deer was taken at 230 yards and that's pretty darn impressive for a shotgun! My neighbor (cop) told me one of his coworkers tookan 8 point at nearly 300 yards with a 260gr sabot slug. Yeah the sabot slugs are best for this. It still does foster slugs ok but it's rifle like accuracy with sabot slugs. brenneke black magic slugs do very nice out of this too. It would have been nice to see grouping with one type of sabot slug instead of switching since they will all shoot slightly differently.
Flat at 200?
You didn't do any groups. This information is useless
Did he not say rifled barrel? Yikes, shooting rifled slugs and not sabots. 😮
One shot doesn’t determine the ammo the weapon likes need to fire groups
The way Stafford threw his hat
Dude quit calling it a rifle. It’s a bolt action shotgun. It being a bolt action and having a rifled barrel does not make a 20ga a rifle.
Why is he using rifled slugs through a rifled barrel. Rifled barrel is for sabot slugs .
Great review, man. I've been browsing bolt action shotgun videos, and so far, yours has been the best and most informative. 😁
I’ve noticed over the last 20 years or so that you will find all your groups with all your brands will tighten up if you clean the barrel every 3 shots. The plastic fouling in the rifling will cause your groups to open a bit.
100% correct! The rifling is not that deep and gets fouled quickly by tye plastic sabots
That’s what mine likes. Remington ,sub 1 1/2” @100
Are you shooting 2 3/4 or 3 inch?
I shoot the copper impacts through my 500 rifled slug barrel and shoot 1 inch groups at 50 yards. Not cheap, but a devastating round
Do not use rifle slugs in a rifled barrel. Sabots only!!!!
Did the 2 3/4 accutip shells feed and extract fine? People are saying only the 3 inch shells are extracting and feeding
Lightfield sabots are my go to slugs... why did you run a rifled slug through a rifled barrel??
you dont shoot rifled slugs out of a rifled barrel. sabots. you seem like a nice guy, educate yourself before making another video. just sayin.
Yeap, That was my question, why is he shooting rifled slugs out of a rifled barrel? but he shot it and hit the target, and the barrel didn't explode, so I guess in an emergency you should be able to shoot either slugs
The hornadys sucked in my 220 , i had best luck with federals an Remington accutips
I thought your only supposed to use sabot slugs in a rifled bore and rifles slugs for a smooth bore
Yup.
Your right lol buddy about to mess up his new gun 😂
220 and remmy accutips were designed for each other, literally. Still the best bullet for that gun despite being a little lackluster on knockdown. Barnes expanders were the hardest hitter for that gun before they disappeared. Almost as accurate as accutips too.
You keep calling it a rifle. It is a shotgun with a rifled barrel.
It's still a rifle
It was NEVER a rifle. It was always a shotgun. Putting a rifled barrel on it doesn't make it a rifle. It makes it a shotgun with a rifled barrel. You can ride a horse on a road but that doesn't turn the horse into a car.
@@azzir325 Sure. It uses single-projectile " _shot_ " 😂 If you insist on being a pedant, at least call it a slug gun.
A slug gun it is, and a slug gun is a shotgun, not a rifle.
Any leads on where to purchase the Remington ones?? 3’ or 2 3/4
In my area - I have had better luck finding them at Fleet Farm or Scheels. The 3” shells has been harder to find. Right now they’re no where to be found due to the deer firearm season. It’ll be awhile before I will see them back on the shelf.
Ive grown so tired of not being able to find Accutips so I tried Browning BXS sabots. I first shot a couple of my remaining Accutips. Then, shot the Browning BXS sabots. I cant speak to expansion or speed. But, I can tell you I had the same accuracy results. And the Brownings were about $7 cheaper per box.
What scope are you using? I use a Nikon slug hunter
Federal premium trophy copper 3" 275 grain are pretty damn good too! I tested them back to back with the remington accutip 2 3/4 and grouping was just as nice if not better. I actually prefer federal because scheels in eden prairie has a bunch of them and they're not as expensive, $17.99/5 slugs. So if you need a secondary ammo, give them a shot!
I love my 220, i do not love the price tag of over $5/round though! Tack driver of a slugger!
Accutips are most accurate but do not penetrate as well as other choices. Still adequate but this gun would benefit from a 24" barrel
To bad i seen they recalled all the accutip ammunition. Can't find it anywhere. According to remington they could have the wrong sized slugs in the and could explode the barrels.
You can find them online all day I have plenty to last
They did recall some lots but not all.
I wish someone would make a quality sabot at a fair price. He probably spent close to $50 in ammo on this session.
Might try Reloading. BP Ballistic Products
If you getaway with $50 sighting your slug gun, consider yourself lucky. I’ve been there & my wallet still hates me 😀
I HATE WHEN PEOPLE CALL GUNS TOYS!!
Great Video. I bought a new Savage 220 20gauge this summer. I'm doing the same. Same results. I'm using 2 3/4 inch shells. I used sabots from Winchester, Federal & the Rem. AccuTip's. The AccuTips performed the best, they are also recommended for the 220 by Savage. The action on my 220 is stiff. It also has difficulty ejecting the empty cases after firing. I was told to oil the action, bolt, and the bolt slides (inside the receiver); then sit and work the bolt many times. I've been doing this while watching TV and its helping a little. I'm concerned that it doesn't eject spent shells well. Is anybody else having that problem? They tend to just hang in the chamber. I'm going to try tipping the gun to the right before ejecting. That should help. I'm worried that I'll have the problem when I need to get off a fast second shot when hunting. I'm using the same exact targets in your video (Did you get them at Fleet Farm)? The orange bullseye is 2 inches wide. I'm shooting about a 3 inch group at 100 yards. Thats good, but I was hoping for better. I plan to shoot targets at 200 yards next time I'm at the range. Not trying to be a prick, but a guy should measure the bullet group from the center to center of the bullet hole. We know the Orange bullseye is 2". It looks like the 2 bottom holes from the Accutips are just under that - say 1 1/2". This should translate to about 3" at 100 yards. That is about what I'm getting and other guys I know report the same with their 220s. I'm anxious to see what I'm going to get at 200 yards. If its more than 6" I wouldn't feel comfortable shooting at a Whitetail at that range with the 220.
Does not have ejector slide bolt faster it will help
@@baby2002 Yes, I did notice if I pulled the bolt back faster, the empty shell cases do eject better.
Run the bolt like you mean it and you'll be fine. Lol
I own this weapon, and many others. I know you are new to shooting, or at least new to accuracy and repeatability. Good video, but you should never take a free-floating barrel and strap it to anything. A good tripod or a sandbag and a couple deep breaths would be better than restricted balance
Also, if you can get 3" Federal Premium 275gr sabot @1900fps, I'm sure you will be satisfied. I've tried Hornady over and over for this weapon, but the Feds shoot better groups at 100m+ and in temp differential from +110F to -20F
Agreed. I been hunting with same Savage 220 for the last 8 years and the best ammo for this gun is Federal Trophy Copper: 1 inch groups at 100 yards. My longest shot with my Savage 220 was 150 yards. And that was without a rest.
1 more ? fot you..saw that you strapoed down the gun in front of your scope..any particular reason? I was under the impression, that nothing should be touching the barrel..i shoot from a sled rest too..what will be your final zero at ..100 yrds?
You are correct. Nothing should touch the barrel. It will mess with the vibrations & harmonics of the barrel. I can cause the slug/bullet to exit the gun unevenly - leading to less accuracy. I'm getting about a 3" group at 100 yards using the 2 3/4" Rem. AccuTip.
Virtually impossible to find the Remington accu-tip slugs..went with the Hornady SST ..pretty accurate at 100 yards..anyone try reloading slugs ? ..at 15-20bucks a box ,its expensive
Did you try loading the gun one in chamber and two in magazine to see how it cycles?
They cycle fine ,but you need to do it with authority..no sliding bolt back and then easing a new cartridge in..no gentle bolt action for this rifle..but it accurate
I purchased a 220 like yours but in stainless. When I took it out of the box and looked it over, I noticed sloppy workmanship in the receiver and returned it and picked up an older model that doesn't have the adjustable stock. I saw one of the newer model 220s with the right hand thumbhole laminated wood stock and, if I didn't already have a 220, would have purchased it because the plastic stock is cheesy. What I noticed about my 220 is that the magazine sucks. I read about problems with the magazine which rattles and is best loaded with one shell, making it a two shot shotgun. The gun is accurate, I have to say. I too started off with cheap foster slugs to get on paper then went to more expensive sabots for the final zero. I have fired Litefields 2&3/4" 7/8 oz lead hollow points, 3" Remington Accutips and 3" Remington copper slugs which, are the most accurate.
I don't have any issues with my rifle (knock on wood). Will be taking it out this weekend for the first hunt, so hopefully we'll get it done.
@@JackT81 Any luck? 🦌
I took a doe down on my last day. Plenty of does. A few smaller bucks came through, but nothing worth taking.@@cloudbase7799
Thank you for sharing. Good luck this season and please follow up.
What stand and scope are you using?
This scope was the Rapidstrike 1-6, but I just swapped it out to a Vortex 4-16. Stand is a Caldwell.
