Community Leaders and Beneficiaries Express Gratitude as Foundation Marks Eighth Year of Free Medical Outreach

On August 23, 2024, the Marcel Ofomata Foundation held its 16th Bi-Annual Free Medical Mission, marking another milestone in its unwavering commitment to providing essential healthcare services to rural communities in Nigeria. The outreach, held at three locations-Ozalla Primary Health Care Centre, Isuofia; the Palace of HRH Igwe Godwin Ezeadusionu in Nanka; and Landmark Hotel, Igboukwu-served over 2,000 beneficiaries, offering free medical consultations, treatments, and various health services.
Dr. Marcel Amaechi Ofomata, Chairman of the Marcel Ofomata Foundation, expressed his deep satisfaction with the success of the event. In his address to the press, Dr. Ofomata emphasized that this outreach is not just an act of charity but a personal calling and an obligation he is committed to continuing. "As long as God gives me life and the enablement, this free medical outreach will continue," he affirmed, reiterating his call for partnerships to expand the reach of these critical services, especially given the pressing health challenges faced by many rural dwellers.
The medical mission, now in its eighth year, has become a bi-annual event aimed at ensuring consistent medical follow-up for participants. Dr. Alphonsus Ekanem, Medical Director of the Marcel Ofomata Foundation, highlighted the comprehensive nature of the services provided during this mission. The team, comprising medical doctors, nurses, pharmacists, medical laboratory scientists, and volunteers, offered a wide range of healthcare services, including the treatment of chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, distribution of deworming medications, free eye checkups, and the provision of free eye glasses.
Beneficiaries also received medical education, professional consultations, and access to essential diagnostic tests, including urinalysis, malaria tests, hepatitis B and C screenings, and pregnancy tests for women of reproductive age. These tests were crucial in ensuring accurate diagnosis and effective treatment plans tailored to each individual’s needs.
The 16th edition of the medical mission marked the conclusion of the Foundation's 2024 outreach efforts, building on the success of the 15th edition held earlier in January, which also featured surgical interventions such as fibroid removals and lump excisions. Reflecting on the journey so far, Dr. Ekanem expressed gratitude to Dr. Ofomata for his relentless dedication to improving the health and well-being of rural communities.
The impact of the medical mission was felt across the participating communities, with many beneficiaries expressing their heartfelt appreciation. Emmanuel Obiekwe, a 73-year-old beneficiary from Igboukwu, shared his gratitude and prayers for the continued success of the Foundation. Similarly, Mr. Samuel Okoye of Nanka, a regular participant in the outreach programs, lauded the Foundation for its consistent support and healthcare provision.
The event also garnered the attention of community leaders, including HRH Igwe Alexander Ejikemeuwa Azike (IDU III), the traditional ruler of Igboukwu Community, who was present at the venue to encourage the people. Speaking to the press, Igwe Azike praised Dr. Ofomata for his relentless efforts in providing free medical services and called on well-meaning individuals and government bodies to partner with the Marcel Ofomata Foundation to further extend these vital services to more people in need.
