The premise and character-building in Death Note are unparalleled and the ingenuity and innovation it brought to anime cannot be overstated. It was well-defined for its time, and it had a very unique setting and plot. Tsugumi Ohba's masterpiece of writing deserves more credit than it often receives. Many overlook the story for its old and oversaturated themes, but it was ahead of its time and had a very unique setting and plot. The character-building, in particular, was exceptionally influential in the world of anime. I know some people dislike Death Note and anime as a whole, and that's fine, but it's important to not judge a story based on biased generalizations stemming from ignorance of Japanese culture. Anime is a world-changing medium, and along with Death Note, there are many other brilliant pieces of writing in anime. For me, anime has had a profound impact and has changed me as it has for many others. For a long time, I didn't know that media could be expressed in this form. People should put aside dismissive sayings like "It's just an anime" because they are simply misguided. Anime can be just as impactful as any other medium and it's important to find enjoyment in what speaks to you. It's the same as saying "It's just a sport" or "It's just a game." Although they might think they are being helpful or realistic, in reality, they are stripping the enjoyment out of something by saying it doesn't matter. Anything can matter if you make it so. You should find enjoyment in anything you want. Don't listen to the societal frames that tell you otherwise. We all die in the end, all the same. You might as well enjoy breathing air and consuming food. Perhaps while doing so, you can entertain your mind with external stimulation through media and storytelling, which has been around since cavemen. "Have you ever enjoyed an experience or interaction with a pet? Or appreciated a moment with someone? Or really enjoyed a good meal or sight or sound? Have you ever lost someone? Hurt yourself? Felt really hungry? Been angry, sad, proud, or glad, or any of it? What about stories or pictures? Within your mind, do they form into something coherent? Something meaningful? Are these not all, at their base, forms of creation of "meaning"? It is only within the context of minds that the concept of "meaning" has its foundations. And it has always been that way." (A quote from something I couldn't find, comment if you know it.) So what is so different about anime? If people find something meaningful in it, I see nothing wrong with enjoying it. It's an old thing to say, such a close-minded perspective, to say something doesn't matter. Of course, nothing matters in the grand scheme of things. But why should that stop you from finding meaning in things on your own? I hope I haven't talked too much. I just needed to get it all out. TLDR: Death Note is a masterpiece of writing with a unique plot and well-developed characters and I argue that anime as a medium should not be dismissed based on biased generalizations. I encourage people to find enjoyment in whatever speaks to them and try to remind people that the concept of "meaning" has its foundations in our minds.
