Blacksmith/Bladesmith Heavy Equipment Mechanic. Born and raised in Alaska the last frontier! Aspiring Wootz smith. I specialize in forged tooling and edged tooling such as knives and axes. I emphasize on forging and forge welding to make these tools.

Check out an excellent article on niobium alloyed knife steels from Larrin Thomas at www.knifesteelnerds.com Btw made a mistake which I figured something would slip by me when talking about the iron carbon phase diagram and the other alloy graphs. My nomenclature for eutectoid Carbon content was incorrect. I was saying eutectic but proper term its eutectoid.

Would a 3/4” coil spring work if I don’t plan on making anything over a 3lb hammer?
Fascinating. In theory this would be somewhat similar approximation to ApexUltra, no? Also, beyond wootz, what other alloys have you experimented with? Might be interesting to try to re-create long forgotten alloys like Munschet Special.
@@mikafoxx2717 apexultra is a completely different chemistry. Crucible steel process is a crude process. I’m not sure I’ll continue making alloys other than just simple plain carbon steels and Wootz. Thanks for watching!!
@HeavyForge Fair enough! I just thought apexultra was a niobium low alloy crucible steel. Wootz is the real rare gem, so definitely keep perfecting them!
The Petersen Type X hilt is on the latest (or newest) Ulfberht sword ever found. I don't know if you knew, but you almost made a replica of the last Ulfberht sword. Those swords were forged in today's Germany. In Austrasia, the homeland of the Franks and heartland of the Frankish Empire. They first appeared in the Carolingian Era under Charlemagne the Great.

@@HeavyForge The original Ulfberht swords were made fully of high-carbonated steel, that's what made them so much better. But there were attempts to copy or fake them with swords that only had steel edges.
I don’t think that’s actually 100% true, I’m not gonna act like I’m an expert on the subject but after talking with many credible European smiths such as Peter Johnsson and Tord Bergelin who have examined these swords the edge was high carbon wrapped around a core. What we know of the swords in the west is skewed apparently. Seems the pieces Allen Williams examined were only of the edge. I suggest looking into the study by Ingo Petri.
@@HeavyForge As far as I understood it the blades are all steel, but definitely of different quality in different parts. You're absolutely correct. Alan Williams heavily skewed the view of these blades. He claims that they were made from crucible steel from the Middle East imported by the Vikings. But he only checked the carbon content. Ingo Petri is actually not that informative in this regard. He mostly quotes Alan Willams. A newer and much more thorough investigation of an Ulfberht sword at the University of Hanover done in 2015 by a workgroup around chemist Robert Lehman has shown that the manganese content and slag inclusions both are too high for it to be crucible steel. They found that the blade is made from hardenable manganiferous steel and that there are iron ore mines in Germany itself that match the manganese content.
one hand weapon is aimed to weigh 3lbs and 6lbs for two hand weapon. 4lbs is a nice compromise if you have the strength. Feel the power 😂

@@HeavyForge do you have a store page? I've been working with a standard knife and I've been really wanting to get a Damascus knife, wether wootz or something like it but comparable harness and edge retention to something like a Dexter kitchen knife which is what I've been working with it. Decided that after I get good at knife skills and sharpening I wanted to get a nice knife with a nice looking handle and while reading around I originally was under the impression it was no longer possible to make this steel for some reason

@@Rhymer3 I did not buy it but was given a bunch by a friend that worked in the foundry industry. There are some decent finds on eBay.

For some reason when you mentioned that your spring stock was from an engine, I heard Paul Hogan's voice saying, "That's not a valve spring, THIS is a valve spring!"

Great job! I’d say that mace absolutely fits an apocalyptic theme. Quite durable as well. I like how you used it on a cinder block and forged from a semi truck axle shaft is awesome!

In the video when you were doing your testing on it I could hear the sword vibrating you need to fix your handle😢
