Awsome trapping vid awsome catches. Thanks for taking us along
I appreciate the kind words and I am glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching. Stay tuned, there are some interesting things to come.
Could you please you post a list of measurements here so it can be printed? Thanks
I did go thru the measurements in the video but is there something that I missed or didn't give clear enough measurements? I will look into how I can try to post something in the comments but a chart may not show up. Thanks for watching.
Great to se you at it again this year ! Did you ever determine what turned your skunks orange last season ? My guess was too much hydrogen peroxide in the mix to take the stink out …
Hydrogen peroxide is a whitener does nothing for odor removal. It's the baking soda, dish soap combination that removes the odor of the skunk.
That is an interesting theory as well. I don't have a conclusive answer. My best guess and working theory is that after removing them from the trap I place them in a plastic grocery bag so that they don't stink up my gear or other animals in my truck. In the past I have stored them in the bag for as long as 2 days in the shade before skinning them and would do a few days worth of catches at once. I think that leaving them in the bag may have lead to the staining, especially the ones that had sprayed recently or in the trap. I also have been doing a better job making sure that I am rinsing out the peroxide mix and letting them dry before freezing them. I only had a couple so far (have put up about half of this years catch) that have showed some staining but nothing like what I showed in the original video. Thanks for watching.
You may be right. I am not a chemist but it seems the chemical reaction between the peroxide and baking soda is necessary make the proper lather to make the odor removal process work. I did a better job rinsing out the mixture this year and I think that has helped as well.
Good job for the first day of the season. Hope your luck continues!!!
Thanks for watching. There are lots of things to come.
Things look great, hello from West Virginia
I appreciate that. Thanks for watching.
Nice fur good job putting in up
I appreciate that, I am proud of how they turned out. Thanks for watching.
Looks like u did well for catches. Do u set any cable restraints for yotes and fox with snow the rest of the season?
I didn't set any snares this season. The weather was too warm when I was running the line that I was afraid they would spoil and I haven't seen any good trails yet this winter. The snow has been coming and melting about every week so it is hard to find fresh tracks. Chances are I won't set any this year. I plan on doing some calling for coyotes after the new year. Thanks for watching.
I see some very nice put-ups for sure! No problem with too high of humidity? Years ago (NAFA was still alive) I made new coyote stretchers to the new Canadian-taper when Ryan gave the measurements. I spoke with a NAFA agent in Winnipeg and he advised me not to use the new style but keep to the measurements NAFA ask for, which I did.
I take a lot of pride in putting up quality fur so I really appreciate the compliment. Most of the summer and all fall I run a dehumidifier in the basement and as soon as we turn on the heat it gets almost too dry down there. Like 15% humidity. As for the stretchers, I prefer the "Canadian-taper" because it doesn't stretch the neck as much and it seems most buyers look at the neck first to see if the fur is thin there. Is it helping my price, hurting my price, or graders don't care, I don't know. The country buyers I have dealt with have never said anything about it. Thanks for watching.
It should work, can’t wait to see results, hello from West Virginia
They did work out rather well. Check out my Out On The Line Series starting right after the new year to see some catches and stay tuned next summer for a detail analysis of how they worked and my thoughts on using them. Thanks for watching.
Good luck this season , trapping is just a blast. Our season starts in a few weeks, and I can’t wait. Hello from West Virginia.
I appreciate it. I am only a couple days away and I think I have everything ready. Thanks for watching. Stay tuned around the new year for the out on the line videos.
Knees and back problems. You are too young for that. I don't think you will ever give up hunting.Am I right?
I will keep going as long as I can keep moving. My knees are bad, it just hurts when you are kneeling on hard dirt lumps for an hour.
I normally don't ask others what they got for their fur unless they share it. I noticed that you mentioned prices on everything but coyotes... I'd be curious if you would be willing to share what you got for an average on your NW Mn coyotes. I got a $10 nose count last year- put up, good coyotes. Far below production cost, but it is what it is.
I trap in West Central MN near the ND/SD state line so the coyote is a bit different than NW MN coyotes that you mention. I have averaging in the mid teens the past couple years. Not great but I will take what I can get. That is for put up coyotes as well. Thanks for watching.
Color resembles the "essence" from the glands. My thoughts are it's chemistry and it's in the fat cells/skin. There's gotta be another way to preserve the nose without folding. Give it try and see if you if it makes a difference. My vintage, non skunk fur coats have this same problem changing color. I bet getting your hands on purple (blonde hair care) washing shampoo would fix this. Or at least make them look better. There's gotta be some you can do to take out the brass. Hopefully affordably.
Sorry, it's late here and apparently they removed the edit function from YT? Hopefully you get the gist of what I was trying to write
I posted a reply to your post on Trapperman explaining my working theory. I have had several top lot awards for the same skunks that were discolored at the FHA auctions so the buyers must also realize that the staining can be removed after they tan the skins. Thanks for watching.

This was western Minnesota. Thanks for watching.
Thats why its called hunting not killin😂
That is 100% correct. The point was just don't be so hard on yourself and trust the process and don't second guess yourself all the time. Thanks for watching.
Love early goose when they're dumb yet. Great solo hunt!
It's a good thing they are dumb because it seems to take a couple days for me to get in the swing of things as well. It does make it harder to try to film as well and I probably miss out on a few birds because of that. Thanks for watching.
What nice surprise 😜!!! I thought that was the same week end Nick was hunting too. You did a great job 👍 .
This was the second weekend of hunting and I was by myself. Thanks for watching.
Have you learned anything from mistakes?
I learned to make the catches for the doors so they can't push them open. Otherwise I don't know that I have made to many mistakes with colony traps. Thanks for watching.
As usual, very informative, and you explain everything in detail. Love your show. Hello from West Virginia .
I am glad you like my videos. I may talk too much for some people but I want to make sure people know why and what I am doing. Thanks for watching.
Put two side by side on the first and last space
I am not sure what you mean. Can you explain what you are talking about?
@@SchmattzOutdoors If you put two clips in each end space, that would limit the distance the wire could slide.
I thought about that but I really wanted the corner to be tightly pulled together because if it is loose at all, it doesn't want to stay as square and could foul up the door. Thanks for the suggestion and for watching.
Great video new to trapping and this was very helpful
I'm glad it was helpful. I hope it helps you get a few extra dollars for your fur this up coming season. Thanks for watching.
thank you for such a great video it is by far the best fleshing video ever you helped me so much
I appreciate the kind words. I hope that it might have been beneficial and you got a few pointers. Thanks for watching.
I like the videos. I posted one trapping video, going to do more. I moved from Iowa to New York, so there will be a learning curve. I hope people will enjoy. Check me out.
Thanks for watching. Any new location can have a learning curve but the basics are a good place to start. Good luck with your channel.
Good info, can’t wait to fill them stretchers, hello from West Virginia
Hopefully they are full for several at least several weeks each season. Thanks for watching.
Yep I’m in the process of getting all my Duke 550s 650s and MB 550s ready good luck on trapping season
I will be getting those done as well probably mid September as well as a few new traps. Thanks for watching.
Try Matt Carlson, hes very fair and runs almost the entire state.
I had looked him up a few years ago and the timing of his route that got close to me didn't work with me trying to also send furs to the FHA auction as well. I will see this year what his routes look like and if it works out, I may try to see what he offers. Thanks for the tip and for watching.
How does the fur turn out in the summer, I never skinned one in hot weather. Hello from West Virginia.
The hair was pretty thin and the guard hairs were sort of patchy. I have never trapped them in the middle of the summer until now so I was curious as well. Thanks for watching.
I have seen this alot but never knew why.
I now am wondering if it has something to do with me putting them in plastic grocery bags after dispatch and not taking them out for a couple days sometimes before I have enough to make it worth skinning them. I am going to try a few thing to see if it improves. Thanks for watching.
Good idea on inserting the board down in the table, hello from West Virginia
It is a good idea but I can't take credit for the idea. It was part of FHA's design. Thanks for watching?
How many completed beaver boards do you own?
I have 4 now. I had 2 and I built 2 more for this video.
So glad I found your channel… great content 👍
Glad you enjoy it! Thanks for watching.
It is hard to de-program the word stretch to say the word forming . Leon from Top Lot does make some good boards. One mistake I had with a plywood board was a knot caught and ripped the skin and on a marten it was a 100$ mistake
That's a bummer about the martin. I probably would lean towards a different wood choice than plywood for them. For raccoons, skunks, and Badgers, I haven't had any issues so far. Leon does make good boards but is belly boards seem to be way taller than they need to be. Thanks for watching.
@@SchmattzOutdoors Rally's H. dad (RIP) made some good marten boards we got 400 from him once. No the belly boards have to be seen = longer
Love it, can’t wait until September, I make my own out of basswood. Hello from West Virginia.
I just can't justify the cost of basswood when cheaper wood will do the same job. I am willing to sacrifice a few pins. Thanks for watching.
Pretty informative! Do you memorize everything you going to say.
I generally have a few points I want to make figured out ahead of time otherwise it is all of the cuff and most of the time shot in 1 take. Thanks for watching.
I've only washed my skunks in Dawn ultra, peroxide, and baking soda and never had the stripes turn color even after freezing. It almost looks to me like it could either be oil from the fat discoloring the fur or the Dishsoap your using.
Those are the things that I think as well. I will continue to try a few things and see how things turn out. Thanks for watching.
I've never put up skunks so not sure whats going on! I'll be interested to see what is causing it! Good luck with everything my friend!
I few ideas to try but I still don't know. Thanks for watching.
Do you have to clean the skulls an pecker bones ?
My buyer take them raw and they do the cleaning. Thanks for watching.
Reach out to some taxidermists and see if they have any ideas to help!
I will have to give that a try if I can't figure out what is going on. Thanks for the idea and for watching.
We used to use dawn dishwashing detergent on baby ducks and had no trouble with color on the feathers. It's worth a try. Good luck.
I used Dawn dish soap this year and had the same issue. Thanks for the idea.
Maybe it has something to do with the essence in a skunk.
That is what I am thinking as well.
How did this work out ? did the Y on end work ok?,great idea, was going to make one.
It works very well. I only wish I had shortened my cable by about 2 inch so that cable bottoms out before the clamp is fully extended. It works well for coyote but the cable has stretched a bit over the years and doesn't always work on fox. The Y works very well, better than both coming straight out the end. Thanks for watching. I hope it work well for you.
an option instead of your pocket pipes- use a piece of PVC pipe. 2" is a good size and a foot long or so- lay it on the shore, and cover it with cattails/ muck, etc. You can paint it black if the white bothers you- it didn't seem to matter for me. Have the edge of the pipe over the water, bait/lure as you wish (btw, mink lure deters muskrats as much as coyote urine deters fox)and trap directly at lip of pipe. I assure you, you don't want the trap back 4-6" on any mink set. Mink aren't working it straight on, they will be working it from the waters edge, or the shore. A trap 4-6" back from the "hole" will miss most mink. Also, a foot of water with a light trap (ie #11) won't drown a big back foot male mink consistently. I've had a mink toenail a time or two but never a wring off. A tip on the RR plates (works on old brake rotors as well) is to put a couple carriage bolts through, a couple from each side- this keeps te plate from sliding as easily on the bottom.
Have you ever tried poly under your pans? I started with poly decades ago, went to pan covers of various types- waxed paper, cupcake papers, toilet paper, etc and cotton under, fiberglass under, foam under- and finally stuck with screens for many years. but I felt I was getting a few misses because of the screens that out weighed any gain in more kill area, so went back to poly 5 or 6 years ago and wondered why I ever quit using it. Most people that use poly use way too much and it can freeze or interfere- just a small piece spider webbed out a bit is all you need- doesn't freeze solid, no odor, and no digging as other under pan things I tried had- and no pan cover to mess with. You can even use it in water sets where sand, muck getting under pan is a concern.
I have never used anything but muffin wrappers and testing paper towels for pan covers. I think that most anything will work if used right but I have my system down pretty well. If it starts getting to be an issue I will look to change.
Thanks for the ideas. I will keep my traps close to the end of the pipe. I didn't think about them coming from the side. I am not worried about the light trap as I won't be trapping in water that is that shallow that if the trap goes to the end of the drowner that won't be able to get to the surface. I am not using the weight of the trap to do the drowning. I like the idea of the bolts but that is going to really make them a hassle to stack in the off season. I only have a few sloughs where I would ever be worried about my plate moving with a coon catch. I will just stake the deep end instead of the plate.
Enjoyed your video.Good luck when you go mule deer hunting. You must have really enjoyed going last year. Take pictures and stay safe 😁 Rose
The Mule Deer trip I was talking about in this video was the trip from this past fall. It will probably be several years before I get a tag again.
Regarding the male vs female ratio. This is what I believe: After pups are on their own, neither male nor female defend territory, but they do have dissimilar ranges. Males tend to have a bigger range than do females- so if you are setting primarily on travel routes, the % would favor males as there would be more males passing by. As the season progresses, you take out some of those males, now allowing more females present, and as habitat decreases from the season (harvest, field work, hunting, weather) the females travel more. Now the 2nd thing is why more older males as a pattern- in a depressed population, you have less pups, less mother survival, etc and you just have more adult males survive. On this same note, and also bringing in lure usage, your fall population in a good or lets say average year, should have 60% or so YOY. Your lack of females and pups might well be the result of the drought. As to lure. I understand your position and thought that way as well, keeping notes on lures and always reluring with same lure. but over time, I started to think the opposite might be more helpful. Maybe I had a couple coyotes walk by before 1 was caught. Would those same lures now interest those same coyotes? Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe new smells might do the trick. In any case, I use two main lures- a sweet lure and a real skunk lure. With 2 sets at a location each get 1, and the other lure is random from 4 or 5 others, plus a different bait in each set. Remakes reluring is random, don't care what lure it is. And changing up lures- if 60% of the population is YOY ? Plus I caught 4 of my collared coyotes on same lures and same sets. Just food for thought. Oh yes- on the ratio thing....when I was collaring in the late spring, I thought I would caught more males. With 10 collars, I caught 10 females, a couple lactating. This was interesting, and I asked my mentor what could it mean? He told me " it means you caught 10 female coyotes". I think of that often.
correction- I recaught 4 of already collared coyotes in same sets, same lures.
I agree with the first part of you comment about the males moving more and what happens as I catch some but I have some issues I have with your theory. This year the YOY were quite a bit smaller than the adults. I had a couple Large graded coyotes so telling the YOY from the adults was pretty easy and I only had 5 that I could tell were YOY and the rest would have been adults. I also look at the teeth once I get home. So that is less that 33% catches and they should be the easier ones to catch. I do tend to send a lot of what I think are travel corridors so that is an interesting theory as well. The reason I put the same lure in a set over and over is that next year I will change to a completely different bait and lure on almost all sets to maybe catch some I may have missed the year before. I agree with the types of bait and lure when using 2 sets but I have plenty of spots that may only be good for 1 coyote every other year so do I really want to put 2 sets there every year. No. I have been putting 2 sets in more locations that seem to produce more consistently and then I do use two completely different bait, lures, and sometimes different sets. Part of it is after making a couple catches in a single set, adding another set in that location that year to help pick up those other animals that don't want that bait, lure or are shy of the catch circle has helped on my line as well. I also don't have enough traps to even get every spot I would like to trap much less get double traps at every location. Also having enough time to check every thing is always an issue. As for the 10 female thing, Catching Males first at high numbers is something I have tracked for 5 years so it isn't just a 1 year thing. For both coyotes and raccoons.
@@SchmattzOutdoors I'm enjoying our discussions, I can see you like thinking/talking about coyotes as much as I do. Let me throw this out there. I've gone back and forth on a clean set. So a couple of seasons ago, I did this for 2 straight seasons: Any time a location had a coyote in each set. I' d leave them but add a fresh set. This didn't apply to incidentals- if all sets had incidentals but one not a coyote I wouldn't set fresh. I kept records for those 2 years, running 80 or so raps for 4-6 weeks. I found that the coyotes I caught in the fresh sets over the remakes, was so low, meaning almost never, that I concluded it wasn't worth the time and money. So why did I get those results when others find just the opposite to be true. The conclusion could only be they found remakes more appealing over a fresh set, for an unknown reason. Could it be that the attraction of the remake itself, combined with a whole bunch of different odors, made the difference? I don't know, but that could be a fair assumption. In any case I never set a fresh set unless to much mud, etc. I do however believe in the 3 day rule that the Leggitts promoted with rust- after a catch, if no new catch after 3 days, I change the trap out. While I agree old rust doesn't deter coyotes, I know fresh rust, combined with the whole set construction, raises alerts and they will step everywhere except over that fresh rusted trap. if you are getting 33% YOY, then you have a stressed population. How does that % compare to the last few years? About the same? If so, it would explain the pattern. I had several good locations where 4+ coyotes was the norm, not having a trap touched or catching 1, an adult male, and then nothing. Another indication of a stressed population (meaning unnatural distribution of ages, classes) is when you catch a pup the 1st night- then nothing. Pups are still often running together or in the same area, so in a normal year, catch 1, catch a bunch. A word of caution though on aging, When I did the collaring, we took measurements of size, girth, length, etc plus ear and teeth inspections, general well being. Both the tech and myself, thought we were predominately getting adult males based on size and teeth. Some big boys. But when posted, most were YOY. Teeth can be tricky based on diet causing different wear patterns, and that here the average age of the coyotes is low- in the study the average of the posted coyotes was 2.5 years, and so not much difference between YOY and a yearling. What will be interesting both for you and me, is next year- will this non winter cause a boom in all populations? I would think it would with food sources as good as they could get.
looking forward to your "lessons learned' video- always some of my favorites. On check day #9- did that coyote have lice? It kind of had that look. Either way- is mange or lice common by you? Fairly uncommon here- I think maybe every 3 or 5 years I get 1 with mange, and get 1 or 2 it seems every year with lice. Also a question- how common are cows in your area? I see that 1 dairy is one of your better spots, and I find myself setting very few locations that don't have cows on the property, or at the very least next door. Cows and coyotes just go together. I too enjoy your videos, keep them up.
My coyotes rarely have lice. I think they get a little mange once and a while and I think what some people call shoulder mites. The hackle and the top of the neck will have no under fur and the fur is almost oily. Usually my animals with mange aren't to bad like you see pictures of sometimes. I get more just plain rubbed coyotes than anything. I trap only a few spots with cattle around. Some pastures but the cows are removed before I will trap or my traps are outside the pasture. It isn't actually a dairy in my videos, it is just a feed lot where they raise male dairy calves and beef cattle. I do agree that cattle can lead to coyotes. I think it has more to do with rodents that tend to be around the cattle that the coyotes are after.
@@SchmattzOutdoors agree- rodents, grain, etc....even enclosed dairys attract coyotes and manure piles esp good. I've seen them following manure spreaders to glean what they could. Yes, shoulder mites are what I was meaning. I only have a couple spots with cows in when I trap- such good locations it's worth the pain. Two things I've found work pretty well to avoid cows tramping on sets. If its a rocky or littered with sticks, etc- you can block them in pretty good, almost surrounding the set with rocks or bigger sticks....looks stupid, and I feel like a fool, but it works. The other option that I prefer, is making a deep trench set. I need to say these are big pastures, wooded areas, ponds, etc so I can make sets out of sight of cattle. I also take a big skull, and put it out in the open in good view, and give it some good squirts of urine. That seems to keep their attention when they do wander by.
I agree that distracting them does work as I have used the urine trick as well and not making the sets in their view will slow them from messing with your sets. I am lucky that a lot of the guys haul their cows home just before the season starts so I don't have to deal with them.
@@SchmattzOutdoors that would be nice. Here I'm faced with the opposite- a couple of my beef guys, several in fact- have most of their land fenced, or the put up a temporary electric fence, and let the cows be in the harvested fields most of the winter. So its crops, harvest, cows in a few days. I do like the places where its summer pasture- those old trials, etc are good locations.
Great job on the video. I hope you continue. I think there is a lot of people interested.
The plan is to keep filming. At least for the time being unless I start getting no views on videos.
Good job. Glad to see your Dad with you. Take care, Rose
He doesn't like to be filmed but I do it anyway just for me.
Use your county GIS to look at current aerial photos (within 6 months) to scout beaver dens…
They don't offer a current map. It takes them over 5 years sometimes to get a land sale updated in the plat book.
That was short but sweet!!!
Didn't need to be to long. Would have probably been a little bit longer had I videoed the furs on the barn.
Glad to see you got 1 on pull day. Thanks for letting us tag along again this year- once I'm done trapping, your videos are the only trapping ones I watch- kind of extends my line a little. Have you gone out after any snow, to see what was out and about?
I am glad that you are following along and commenting. It is good to get others perspectives on what I can try to be better on my line. There are a couple bonus videos coming so stay tuned for those. I do some scouting mid winter but there wasn't a lot of sign around this year and it was tough as we had a very mild winter with very little snow. I will take winters like this every year. Thanks for following along.
Good Job!! very nice Mink.
Thanks for the compliment and for watching. I am glad you enjoy my videos.
