    I drove a ERF truck with a 240hp 8 cylinder Gardener 2 cylinders were outside in the weather it was that long,now I see lots of 2 cylinder Gardeners in narrow boats they sound awesome a lot better than my 4 cylinder Yanmar that’s for sure.

    We had the 8lxb ct in a Cygnus GM 40 boat with twin disk box it snapped the governor off and revved to 10k rpm it needed new fuel pump and crank and cams got it running again but never ran right again we replaced it with a modern doosan md196ti just shows how strong these old engines are

    I had one that was naturally aspirated, 230 horsepower at 1150 rpm absolutely the best marine engine ever made ,and so economical,it was paired with a 514 twin disc box with a 4 -15 to 1 reduction, never missed a days fishing in four years through breakdown,so bloody reliable, a crying shame they are no longer made, cheers from Tasmania

      The valves and pushrods are manually lubricated. A valve cover would be in the way.

    Nou nee hoor met een schip van 1500 ton moesten we het ook met een 1000MWM doen zonder kopschroef maar een sleper steekt al gauw 1m50, makkie dus met een overvloed aan pks..

    A beautiful looking and sounding engine, but only the British would then install jack shafting that mounts the battery charging alternator directly below the fuel lift pump and injection pump. Guess what happens when you are repriming the fuel system. The dynamo equiped engines have the dynamo mounted much further forward out of harms way.

      Only problem then is that it would foul the marine type engine mounts. They mount visible behind the alternator jack shaft. The marine type engine mounts have a hole in them for the jackshaf to go through.

    I knew a two-cycle could be reversed but didn't know that a four-cycle could. I wonder how the turbo operated?

      Yes, it used to be really popular here in europe from the 30's up until the late 70's. The turbo works just as with a normal engine. The camshaft slides over, as seen in this video, this resuts in the intake and exhaust getting different cam lobes and therefore changing direction. The intake remains the intake, end the exhaust stays exhaust.

    Yes we had one in a Foden S41 tractor unit it was a smokey engine when cold, it was a nice engine though,, this was back in the mid 1970s , thank you for the video Jim its not too often we see a Gardner 240 on stage so many thanks from us diesel heads
