    Dear Helma, could you please also perform pieces by Armenian composers of the 20th and 21st century. I have discovered Aram Khachaturian, Arno Babadjanian, Eduard Mirzoyan, Edvard Baghdasaryan, Gazaros Saryan, Togran Mansuryan, Levon Chaushyan, Avet Terteryan and others. I am amazed by their music and admired by their Great Talent. ❤ Would love to hear your performance. Many thanks.

    It's interesting to me that in this early piece there are trademark rhythmic and melodic motives that you still hear in his very late works. Overall, the style here is gracious, elegant, and rather spare. It's not ridiculously difficult. I love the way the harmonies "tighten" into pretty sharp dissonance, and then "loosen" into an almost tonal feel. And while there may be a 2nd Viennese School presence here, there's also some Hindemith and an undefinable "American" feeling to it, like Jack Beeson or David Diamond. Nice piece!

    The first movement sounds similar to mid-stage Liszt and late Medtner in style and expression imo, even though the actual writing and techniques used are quite different. Beautiful, grandiose, and very dramatic. The intermezzo, however, sounds very British, like, e.g., John Ireland.

    York Bowen is an amazing composer. Have his viola sonata on LP - a recording by Soviet violist Georgy Bezrukov on the USSR state label 'Melodiya' from 1978, with Ernest Walker's equally amazing viola sonata on the other side. I find it refreshing to hear composers born around the same time as Stravinsky, and posessing a similar amount of originality, who stayed true to the Romantic style all their life.

    Thanks for making this available with score! While I was happy to hear it, I have some mixed feelings about this piece. There are a lot of nice elements, yet I really cant say that I think its a good composition. Also it leaves me feeling rather annoyed, irked and impotent in a way.

      I'm curious... why don't you think it is a good composition, and why does it leave you feeling annoyed, irked, and impotent?

    • @andrewtrovato1828
      @andrewtrovato1828 10 місяців тому

      Happy to try my best to elaborate. It will take me a little time to put together and point out examples beyond explaining a bit more in detail those overall feelings originally mentioned. I will be fairly busy the next week, so hopefully will be able to answer in more detail in the next 10 days or so. To explain just briefly those feelings which I expressed, or an example which evokes those similar feelings that the piece did, would be those dreams one has where you are trying to reach something or say something, but for whatever reason as hard as you try you cannot actualize your intention. Nothing seems amiss, you are not missing your tongue so you cant speak, your hands are not bound so that you can not handle the object or puzzle which you are trying to put together in some way, but as hard as you try with seemingly nothing wrong, you are impotent, more and more annoyed and irked. In the most general sense regarding the piece, that is not the musical elements in and of themselves, the high piano technique, beautiful at times and interesting harmonies, use of wide ranges of register and dynamics and so on, but in the overall combination of these elements to achieve a higher goal, a common phrase the whole is greater than the sum total of parts, I find myself highly frustrated. That the piece like in those dreams mentioned above, cannot say anything, cannot achieve what it is reaching for, if it even knows what it is reaching for. That the combination of these elements does not achieve a greater weight than the sum total of those elements. It will take a little time to point out specific musical examples, I will try soon to write again and hope this is somewhat clear, what do you think? Thanks for your curiosity and look forward to further discussion.@@MJE112358132134

      @MJE112358132134 10 місяців тому

      @@andrewtrovato1828Thanks for your reply, Andrew. I find your comments interesting, yet quite baffling, as I don't think I've ever heard any piece of music that gave me a feeling like the dreams you mention where you want to do something, but can't, even though there is no reason visible why you can't. I'm not sure I've had that kind of dream, either, so that does perhaps make it very hard to feel what you mean. Another thing you mention was the idea of something being more than the sum of its parts - so you feel that York Bowen's sonata may have many good parts, but they don't add up to more than the sum of them - presumably in contrast with music you would consider truly great, which I assume you would find to be more than the sum of its parts. While I intellectually uinderstand what you mean by that, I'm not sure I can feel it, though. I am able to enjoy quite a few styles of music and I can often get as much enjoyment from some pieces by totally obscures composers, therefore probably ones not many would consider to be great, as I can from indisputably great music by one of the handful of composers everyone informed in classical muisc would consider great. Yet I've never really felt that a prominent feature of music, great or not so great, is the question of whether it is greater than the sum of its parts. While I intellectually understand the concept, I am not actually able to apply it to music, because music doesn't seem to strike me that way. I have tended to make a speciality of exploring very little-known composers, which was probably inspired in my late teens by my regular habit of visiting shops that sold second-hand music, and going through the stacks, and pulling out and buying anything that looked interesting. Used music was very cheap in those days, so I was able to acquire many hundreds of items of sheet music, mostly by unknown composers, yet being music I found satisfying to paly. York Bowen was one of many composers I discovered in this way, and I was immediately attracted to his style of lush romanticism. It didn't include piano sonatas, but mainly shorter pieces, often of the sort that seem intended for advanced students. I'm not sure if this really illuminates the way I appreciate music, but it certainly does explain why I had a bias toward little known composers. If, as you say, you may have further comments when you have the time, it might possibly inspire me to say some more. MIchael Edwards. (If you ever see music comments by a Michael Edwards followed by a number, that's me also. I seem to have acquired two UA-cam identities, without ever intending to, and it seems I have used the two at different times, almost indiscriminately. The one in use now is my initials followed by the start of the Fibonacci series. I think it comes down to which e-mail account I have checked most recently.)

      Great to see your response! And I am very glad there are people like you and others here who are always exploring new and lesser known composers! I will try to address or elucidate my points with musical examples from the Bowen sonata itself in the coming days. I recently spent all of my musical energy highlighting some thoughts in a new composers piece on his channel which was pretty long and I am spent (what am I doing starting to write in these comment sections so much!!). But anyways I have some examples from the sonata in mind and further thoughts which I think may explain my thinking more clearly, hopefully by end of week I will get it all together in another comment.
