Why Air Traffic Control Is The Most Stressful Job In The World
"And this is one-two thousand feet" Twelve thousand feet. That's what it should have said. Watch your videos before posting them.
One two thousand is correct in altitudes. Not sure where you got the twelve.
I was an ATC IN the USAF (64-68), FAA, 1970-2003) and a USN-R ATC (82-91). Worked at USAF Towers, GCA, MRAPCON, FAA TOWERS ALB (70-78), ORF 78-91, Tng officer PIT Twr (91-98) @ ATC controller Manager Manassas Twr. Worked every USAF Fighter, F-105s, F-104's , F-4's, F-14, F-15's, C-5's,C-130s, F-117s, B1s and every civilian airliner except B-747 and I can say ATC was NEVER stressful and controllers loved to work complex, busy situations. Life can be stressful, esp if you live in an inner city. ATC was an adventure.
Once you get up to speed with things how your ATC unit works AND you know what you're doing, then yes, it's not stressful at all.
@@DrTom1946 so many think it’s stressful but it’s not it’s like playing a video game everyday that you get paid six figures for. (At least in today’s money)
I like to correct the video there are 192 flights per day but a controller is only working about 5-6 hours a day so it’s more like 48 flights per day for one controller.
Depends a lot on the airport. Many international hubs are running hourly around 30 to 60 flights. If you work let's say 5 hours on your shift, you will handle more than 50 flights a day.
@@liveandletflyatc I was just pointing out you made ATC sound a bit more stressful than it actually is. Sure I guess it can stressful at times but it can also be very boring at times. I think people over think ATC because you have so many lives in your hands. But no controller thinks that way. They are just playing a game on their scope keeping the dots from hitting each other. That’s what it all boils down to. The job is very repetitive so you pretty much sound pretty confident when you say “turn left heading 300 cleared for the visual runway 28 left approach” for the 10,000th time. You eventually get the entire scope memorized down to each heading, fix, Star, Sid, every airport in your area with their runway heading. The aeronautical map of your sector is literal seared into your brain.

Aviation is still a minor contributor in global CO2 emissions. Last two years the emissions from aviation has been about 2-3% on a yearly basis.

Great! 👍
Don’t be surprised when your flight is flown by a robot in the future.
It may still take a lot of time before this happens. Not sure if that’s going to happen during our lifetime.
Promo sm 💔
🤓🐻
Uhhh, you're wrong, Bub. Airline call signs are spoken in group form, "United Five-Twenty-Five, American One Eighty-two, etc."
According to ICAO that is incorrect. Should be numbers individually. Only if there’s a similar callsigns on frequency, you can change one of the callsigns like that.
“Nine” is “niner” in RTF
That is actually true! It just sounds so weird, same as fower. 😃
Don't forget "tree" and "fife" :)
Yes true!! 😃
the EU and UK changed the flight levels for whole numbers to hundreds though..
That is absolutely true! It could be a global ICAO standard just as well.

Is a trainee responsible for the safety of traffic on his exam day,or are that the assessors on the exam?Like in any other job or duty,is a student/trainee responsible for the safety of traffic till he/she gets her/his own licence,or is it the ojt instructor?
The trainee is responsible for the safety only after they have received a valid ATCO license, not before. OJTI is always ultimately responsible for the safety during the training. During the practical examination it depends on the ATC unit, how the responsibilities are divided. Either the examiner is directly responsible, or there may be the OJTI assigned as a "safety officer", who is still responsible. In this case the examiner has only the responsibility of assessing the candidate, and there is this OJTI who makes sure of the traffic in case something goes wrong.
@@liveandletflyatc fantastic answer, thank you very much!I suppose it's that way in the whole world because we have all been beginners at some point of our lifes so it would be unfair to blame students since they are there to learn yet. Thank you again!
@@liveandletflyatc and can you tell me pls how many chances the trainee has to pass the exam, only 1 or 2?
Yes exactly! Safety is always the number 1 priority in our work. It would be just completely reckless to let a beginner be responsible for everything right from the start. The training is a long process, where you develop the skills to be eventually capable of handling all of the situations safely, and then be responsible of the safety on your own.
This is a tricky question, since the answer may vary. All ATC units have to come up with a Unit Training Plan, which specifies the training process, and the procedure what happens if the validation examination is unsuccessful. I cannot speak on behalf of all the ATC units around the world, but I would guess that in most of the cases there is some sort of remedial training to be done, some extra training shifts with an OJTI, possibly focusing on problem areas. Having only 1 attempt in the Certificate of Competency (COC) examination would be a complete waste. Both the trainees time and the ATC units resources. They still need the employee, so they don't want to start the recruitment process all from scratch because of one failed examination...

Not many people know that a job like yours even exist. But when a accident like happens, what you do makes a difference if people live or not! 👍🏼
ummmm it landed on top of a dash 8 .. soo thats what you forgot to say a couple times.
The collision with the coast guard dash 8 was only mentioned in the beginning. Yes the explosion was of course because of that. Still the investigation is going on how did the dash 8 end up on the active runway, where a landing clearance was already issued to the JAL.
Apparently the dash8 didn't stop short of the runway, and nobody noticed @@liveandletflyatc
gotchya great video tho.@@liveandletflyatc
Yes I think that is the most probable reason. Luckily in many cases that type of runway incursion can be spotted early enough to prevent the incident. Unfortunately not this time...
Thank you! 👍
Wouldnt a chopper be cheaper couse of how new the tech for this is
Very good point! I was thinking about the same. Maybe one reason is the push for electric vehicle society and staying on the cutting edge of technological innovations - even if it’s not the most cost effective solution in the beginning.
All the existing communication data could be used to fine tune a model to assist ATCs, it’s about making their jobs easier and more effective r, not replacing them. I work devops (software engineering), and learning promoting has given me a huge advantage over my coworkers to learn different orchestration stacks and optimize its CI/CD pipelines, imagine if there’s a specific fine tuned model that can assist your work? I feel positive about this even in aviation. Excellent video btw, you deserve more views.
Thanks for the input! Yes we are still far from replacing humans with AI in aviation, and probably we don't even want to go that road ever. AI is still a good tool and can be used more widely, to assist in different tasks.
Within two years? It’s gonna cost a lot to get the infrastructure set up. But being awash with oil money, that won’t be much of a problem.
If they have the right motivation, I think they can set up the whole thing by 2026. But yes it will require a LOT of money and effort to get everything done by that time.
I remembered during my training...... QNH v QFE.... NH = nautical height. FE = Field elevation
Yes I remember exactly the same. Not sure if that's officially correct according to ICAO, but it sure is a damn good and easy way to remember the difference!
Very good briefing 👍
Thank you! We summarized the whole ICAO concept into a 6 minute brief UA-cam lesson. 😃
QNH and QFE are provided by air traffic control. Air traffic control will provide QNH to pilots when they take off or land from an airport. QFE will be provided to pilots as they approach the runway.
Not all pilots need the QFE. But true about the QNH, that is required before commencing the flight and has to be adjusted correctly when approaching the destination airport.
QNH and QFE are two important altimeter values in aviation. They are used to adjust the aircraft's barometer and calculate other flight parameters.
Yes you are right, without those flying is quite difficult.
I also really want to learn about jobs related to the aviation industry. Thank you for sharing that information
You’re welcome! Stay tuned, we have an aviation podcast coming up!
This is so interesting. It would be cool to hear an interview from an air traffic controller to see what their daily challenges and job is like in general
That is being planned…
This video is brilliant!
