Reclaimed Engineered Wood Flooring Restoration and Installation Update
The restoration of the reclaimed flooring is nearing completion and so is the installation. Hand sanding will take place in situ but the dirty and noisy sanding has taken place in the garden. I am concerned as to how it will look when the wax oil is applied. It certainly will be a lot darker.

    For the last planks that meet the architrave you could cut off the tongue on the adjoining board to allow you to just drop the final plank in downwards. Then glue that joint to keep it tight.

    Hello Mr Jones, i always thought closed fires needed a vent to ventilate the chimney? personally think the white would look better painted in the same blue as the walls to knock it back a bit 👍

    • @MrJonesDIY
      @MrJonesDIY 14 днів тому

      Good morning and many thanks for the comment. I do believe that you are right and I should repaint in blue but first I need to convince Mrs Jones. The subject of chimney ventilation does seem to be complicated and some of the arguments for it don't stack up (sorry for the unintended pun). If there is a cowl on the top to prevent rain ingress and a small amount of air able to enter from the room then that should take care of stagnant (moist?) air. It does seem that to meet the holy grail of ventilation in all ways prescribed does result in letting cold air back into the space you have just sealed and insulated in order to keep the cold air out. When I moved, in all eight chimneys in the house had been sealed at the bottom but no doubt leaked some air but there is no damp. In the case of this bedroom, I used mineral wool insulation up the chimney because it does allow some air to pass through and I will not seal the top and bottom of the panel to allow a small amount of air to flow. With a Victorian three story house and tall chimney stacks an open chimney or even one ventilated with an air brick would result in considerable wind noise and cold air down draught. Ventilation in building is a fascinating subject and one that has to be taken seriously, but there are significant differences of opinion even between the so called subject matter experts. I believe that my halfway house use of mineral wool and allowing a trickle of air will be sufficient. Great point and one that I would love to explore further in a video if i ever manage to find the time.

    My take is that the second you introduce time constraints to a job that involves investigation and redesign to get a job absolutely right, you immediately compromise the outcome. And time constraints are always in place for contractors. Especially for bigger firms. If you want a job doing 100% correctly, the only thing to do is train yourself up and have a go. Then at least if it goes wrong, you learn and have the specific knowledge of how to put it right on the second pass. The best tradesmen I knew would sit and mull over a job for half a day or more before touching it. That's a great way of approaching it, but not profitable. And some clients don't appreciate it.

    As a proud eco-warrior I completely disagree with your terrible introduction saying we need nuclear power, gas power etc because we don't have enough solar, wood chip, gas or wind power; that is emphatically NOT what we are saying, or any person in favour of dropping fossil fuel has EVER said. It is a gross tabloid misrepresentation of what we want. It's a lie. You shame yourself with this drivel. Dropping gas, and all fossil fuel power generation, is a *TARGET* that we must aim for immediately. ADDITIONAL fossil fuel licences for the extraction of fossil fuels are completely unnecessary and immoral - we have more than enough for our future. Note, this does NOT say we should drop oil & gas extraction completely, it never has; we need it for drugs and other necessities - we do not need more for power generation. Renewables in the form of wind, solar, wave etc are all cheaper and quicker at getting up and running than any fossil fuel or nuclear alternative. "How would we store enough power for seven days?" What makes you think that is necessary in Europe? Have you seen the continental-wide links? Do you think if it isn't windy in Scotland, the sun isn't out in Spain? Does nuclear power from France, which you quote, not count eventhough it is carbon free? Don't be stupid, don't repeat what The sun and Daily Mail say. Stop encouraging BP, Exxon, Q8, Shell etc etc - they don't need your misinformation, they produce enough of that already! You score zero

      The stated aim of Mr Milliband is energy security and he has repeated this many times. Which would be most secure whilst we transition to green energy, using our own resources or importing fossil fuels? Using gas from our own doorstep or transporting it half way round the world in ships? At the moment we definitely need both gas and nuclear plus imported electricity and yes I did mention France and nuclear power. Importing power is not energy security and recently a number of French nuclear power stations were out of action for upgrade and due to design faults. The gloomy windless weather affected a large swathe of Europe. The sun may well be out in Spain but until they have a surplus of solar energy to sell and until the cables are run/upgraded and until we sort out our own national grid, it is all rather meaningless. Strangely I do not read either of the papers that you mention because the information they provide is of dubious quality and all about headlines. I hate the oil giants with a passion, I hate the fact that they profit when world events curtail the availability of both gas and oil. Their profits are obscene and the money is made from some of the poorest people in the country. In my own way, I am also a proud eco warrior, installing solar, cutting my energy usage, trying to insulate this big draughty house and wearing outdoor clothes right now because my office is cold. The difference is that I believe that we need to transition as quickly as possible but not turn our backs on the energy resources we have in order to remain energy secure during that transition. You refer to me as being stupid. Stupid would be to follow a policy that results in power cuts, putting lives at risk, whilst dependable storage or other sources of renewable energy come on stream. I don't think you are stupid, I think you are passionate about the environment but non technical members of parliament could lead us to a situation where the lights really do go out. Remember it is our wonderful governments over decades that failed to invest in clean energy and the national grid infrastructure. My faith in them making the right decisions now is minimal.

    People rely too much on electricity, I am off-grid and manage, the last week or so of cloud has been a little tough and I do not run a fridge in winter, but to run lights and a laptop for a bit is no problem and maybe I am over cautious with my scrap found Lead Acid batteries, they are my babies and they are spoilt, below 12.4 volts and all loads are disconnected. To get heat, I light my wood burner, but then I enjoy the cooler days anyway and I am perfectly comfortable at temperatures as low as 8 degrees. Well done. Using less electricity is rarely a part of the discussion, but it should be a key focus. I also enjoy those cooler days, just by putting on some warmer clothes or using a blanket ("heat the person, not the space"). Many of us could also use less lighting just by going to sleep earlier and waking up earlier. (Lighting can be very energy efficient these days, but this is just another example of how we can adjust our behaviours to reduce our reliance on electricity, often with no real sacrifice).

    I got as far as "eco warriors" and thought "fack off!" but watched the whole thing because it looks quite nice. We do import some energy (much less than local gas gen) from time to time, but what chance is there it's nuclear? Nuclear runs flat-out (look at any country's online energy monitors) - it's not dispatched. Why would France hold some nuclear gen back in case we want some? There's a Europe-wide energy network, I suspect several European neighbours crank up their hydro, gas, oil, and coal when we import. There's not nearly enough acknowledgement of the fact that UK VRE can have long outages and that when it does, gas shoulders the load. Easy-to-dispatch gas is what makes UK VRE work. We should make gas NetZero: e-NG.

      I have been interested in the lack of capacity in the national grid because it is a ridiculous situation to have wind power available but not be able to use it. The government said in May this year "In a report published today, the Environmental Audit Committee concludes that many planned renewable energy projects are being hampered by persistent problems accessing the electricity grid. These include slow connections, limited capacity, inappropriate planning regulations and market uncertainty." The report also states that net zero is at risk due to the limitations of the grid and th length of time it will take to install pylons and a subsea cable. In 2023 the National Grid paid wind farm operators £215 millioin to shut down turbines due to a lack of grid capacity to accept the power generated.

And yet when you look at the power produced it's negligible on a country-wide scale. The Severn barrier has not being built despite being considered for nearly my entire life (60 years) because it will cause massive damage and just doesn't make sense from an energy producing point of view. Far better to install 10x the number of turbines in the North Sea - each one, btw, is creating a new habitat for sea creatures. All suitable buildings the the UK should install local solar PV. It's so cheap and such a no-brainer. If you do the calculations on gravity energy storage systems you'll find the physics doesn't really work. The formula is E = mass x height x gravity. For example, you can estimate the mass of your house, use 10m/s/s for gravity and work out how high you'd have to lift your house up on stilts every day so that when it drops you could generate electricity. Your house (on average) weighs (has a mass of) 50 tonnes so 50000(kg) * 10 (g) * 1 (metre) - 500,000 joules. Sounds a lot but that's only 0.14kWhours. So to get a day's worth of energy (shall we say 14kWhrs) you'd need to drop your house 100 metres.

There are no mistakes made in politics, it's all going according to plan, making people more dependent then ever. Those in power (behind the curtain) are not interested in practical solutions that make people independent. hell no. I have started my own DIY solar adventure years ago and learned a lot. To cover your energy needs with solar panels during the winter is almost impossible for most. Let's say you need 10kwh every 24 hours, you can cover your needs with an area of 6Kwh solar panels and a battery of 10Kwh. But in the winter you would need an area of 60Kwh solar panels to make enough power on all those dark days. I have a big enough garden to install 50 panels, but, that's not allowed by law. By the way, in my area almost everybody has his roof covered with solar panels, but they all sell their power. It happened already several times the grid went down, they all are sitting in the dark with their candles 😂 Not me, I have two Island systems, being independent as much as possible is my goal.

We will also fast track awarding contracts for mini nuclear power stations ensuring RR are one of the two chosen." Instead we are turning our back on our resources and buying them elsewhere and causing even greater polution. The LNG we rely on is carried on ships that also pollute and of course there are the losses and refrigerants that have to be used. This is something that I will cover in a final video because it is not necessarily the method I will use for the other side of the roof. The seal at the top is created by self adhesive EPDM under the tiles and almost up to the ridge and inserted into the groove meant for the Viridian flashing. The exisiting rubber seal needs to be removed but this is an easy process. I also ran a bead of black adhesive sealant along the top as belt and braces. Most important is to cover all surfaces with the EPDM primer because the adhesion is then incredible. For the joint between panels and it is a small gap, I ran a bead of translucent silicon (unibond) and that would probably be sufficient but I will be covering it in a strip of thin ,uncured EPDM as well. The garage is totally dry and because the panels are close to the ridge the water does not build up an flow over the panels and it escapes either end.
