Bandit Camp, Basilius, Durlag's Tower, start of Cloakwood.
Please excuse the weirdness with my microphone, lately it's been... just weird. But it self-corrects later on in the video, so enjoy!
We’ll be playing with quite a few mods to enhance the experience, including the Sword Coast Stratagems (SCS), the Tweak Pack, NPC Interactions, and Rogue Rebalancing!

U can soll the lick of kirinhale. Every Other option comes from a mod
Since you specifically pointed out your grievances with the added Avenger spells, I thought I'd mention how Spell Revisions fixes those as well: Chromatic Orb in Vanilla indeed has a problem with wonky scaling. Cast by your party early on it usually won't stick due to the massive +6 save bonus (and enemies generally being higher level than you), cast by the enemy it can instakill you. There's also the meme/gimmick tactic of debuffing a really powerful enemy (like a dragon) with save penalties and removing magic resistance and then killing them with Chromatic Orb's Slay effect... Spell Revisions removes the save bonus (so it's a standard save vs spell), and in return smoothes out the effect scaling curve so you don't top out at instant death, but rather paralysis (color is also randomly selected per casting). This makes it a viable alternative to Magic Missile, sacrificing damage for a useful effect. Lightning Bolt is an extremely swingy spell in Vanilla (though there's certainly people that like that), if it bounces outside of your expectations, or enemies move the wrong way, it can completely miss everything (or worse, fry your whole team), if it bounces just right it punches far above its intended damage for a 3rd level slot. The SR version is a single target spell with a big save penalty to make that damage really likely to stick. Honestly, I feel that it's one of the few spell reworks in SR that's underwhelming (as it's just very...basic, compared to the original), but as least it fills a niche (reliable single-target electrical damage), especially for the Avenger. Finally, Chain Lightning is just lackluster for a 6th level slot, no way around it. SR doubles the damage for the primary target (max of 20d6), keeps the damage for the secondary targets (10d6 max) and introduces a -4 save penalty.
See, with those, Chromatic Orb and Chain Lightning are actually pretty good with SRR! Definitely making a good case…
I started a new character after the disaster at Firewine Bridge. A Dwarven Defender No reload Core rules Npc kicked on death (only Rasaad managed). I got 10k xp so recruited Baeloth. Will give daggers to Jaheira with Bow Khalid, CLB+1 Morningstar Kivan, Stealthy Quarterstaff Imoen (55/55 OL/DT so with potions 90/90 at Cloakwood). Had to write down all my abilities on a piece a paper so I will remember them. Got Sleep, Fireball (Ulcaster), and Cold wand.
The original Paladin kits (so all except for Blackguard) differ in their rankings/effectiveness depending on which game you are playing. For example Icewind Dale has metric craploads of Undead, so Undead Hunter is better than it would be in Baldur's Gate. Cavalier is comparatively worse in turn, because in Icewind Dale all Paladins become immune to Fear at level 3 and there are barely demons/dragon type enemies around. Inquisitors are even worse off, since Icewind Dale features *far* fewer high tier spellcasting enemies that the BG series does, neutering their greatest advantage.
@@xFallenAngel Oh yes, Inquisitors in IWD are not useful at all! I learned that the hard way! Undead Hunter is great for IWD and pretty good for BGEE.
Congrats on the baby. Mines 17 now and 6'2. I am playing a Gnome barbarian, unusual but fun. Watching a lot of BG3 and wondering how much fun he, Tiax and Jan would have, changing the Duergar mind on enslaving Gnomes! Another fun vid, thank you!
@@fredblues7175 Yeah, the trippy thing is seeing this tiny little baby and thinking in 15 years he may be bigger and taller than me! Absolutely wild! I’ve said it a few times, and you are proving the point, there is nothing to stop a Gnome from being a great martial character in BGEE, including a Barbarian!
The only criticism I had against both Dav and WesJ was that they didn't rate all spell triggers/contingencies as S tier. The opportunity cost is none, zero, null. Its just free spells, extra spellslots with zero downside.
@@DinkSmalwood Right, I would say one way I see their point is that a caster might or might not use spell triggers all the time due to limited spell space. At max level, a General Wizard would have five slots for each spell level, which might be needed for other immediate spells. However, being able to have a one-click defensive power-up with a trigger is a pretty powerful tool! Having a one click triple or double offense or control action is very powerful!
There's still some ways to tell that Barbarian wasn't "supposed" to be a Fighter kit bur rather a seperate class. For example, Advanced weapon specialization is a keystone feature of the Fighter, all of its kits can go beyond Specialization (even if weapon selection may be limited or grand mastery exchanged for more staying power, depending on kit) ...except for Barbarian, who, as originally "just another member of the Warrior class group" is limited to Specialization. Less obviously, since the Barbarian technically isn't a kit, but a special class (like monk is a special class in the Priest class group) it can't dual-class.
Due to SR(R) buffing the Animal Summoning series, as well as making it much more consistent as to what it summons (summons fixed instead of random creature type, with number based on level), the Beastmaster is at least a bit better off there than in the base game. Still not gonna win any prizes though. ^ ^;
12:42 hamsters get +1 to movement while occupying a forest tile, which synergizes well with their natural camouflage bonus when their scouting for strategic resources during the early expansion phase.
Hi! It could be wonderful a series of equipment guides for all classes! (LOVE CARSOMYR)
@@VeraPhilosophia-ve7sz I absolutely should but it’s based so much on playstyle and kits. For example, Carsomyr is an awesome weapon but if a player is using two weapon fighting then it’s still good as a side weapon for a Paladin but it might not be the main tool in the toolbox. BGEE is so great in the versatility players can use, while I wouldn’t mind tackling an equipment guide for each class, I feel like I wouldn’t do it much justice.
Question: Will a general mage and a sorcerer wind up with the same number of spell slots? I know that sorcerers get very limited selection of spells and they have to live forever with the choices they make. But the number of slots/spell activations during a fight is the same or different at any level? example level sorcerer vs level 9 mage.
All at max level, a General Mage will have five slots per level to put spells into while a Sorcerer will have six castings of spells per level per day. Interestingly, Specialist/Wild Mages and Dragon Disciples flip the script, Specialists get six spell slots while Dragon Disciples get five spells per level per day. As they are leveling up, they will have different rates, for example a Sorcerer will have three castings of Level 1 spells right at the start of the game while a Generalist Mage will have two spell slots at the start of the game. I hope that this helps!
Jaheira and Minsc will forever be my favorites
@@TheOneandPrime Character-wise, they are the most developed and have the longest legs (figuratively speaking)
Just watched the series in one sitting. I'd seriously recommend playing with Spell Revisions. It's (IMO) one of the must have mods for the game and fixes so much that's fundamentally wrong with the spells. Like if we look at Devaeorn's Guide, you'll usually see about half the spells in any given spell level (varies a lot though, obviously) are worthless (C or RP-tier), a third are simply too good (S-tier) and only a handful are "properly" balanced (A or B-tier, always good or situationally great). That...really sucks. Spell Revisions, I feel, brings a lot more spells into this A to B-tier sweet spot, by usually (not always though) nerfing top tier spells and buffing lower tier spells, in effect making more spells viable to use/fewer spells just traps for new players.
@@xFallenAngel My issue with Spell Revisions was that spell balance can be taken the other way. For example, if I cast Protection from Petrification, you would think that I would be protected from being petrified, correct? Nope. Not with Spell Revisions. With that spell up (and with the Spell Revisions mod), you can still get petrified and killed. Maybe being completely immune to an instant death attack at Level 1 is a little broken (as with the base game), but I think that’s supposed to be the case that such a rare and unusual occurrence can be stopped with an early spell. It’s one example of the balance being taken a bit too far. Plus, selfishly speaking, we all know it wrecked early playthroughs! 😅 Mutamin’s Garden just wasn’t the same! Unselfishly speaking, it makes many spells that are usually really good fairly worthless. I have no issue changing tactics for a mod, but Spell Revisions made spell casting unrecognizable and unreliable for me (though kudos to you for making it work!). This is a course my humble opinion, and I will not argue if somebody really enjoys using the mod, it’s just not one of my favorites.
@@Redjoy123 Did you happen to have played with an outdated version? Protection from Petrification does indeed completely protect from petrification still in SR (or at least in SRR, which is what I personally use and can attest to), though I do remember there was talk of some bugs surrounding petrification in general. But yeah, SR(R) even has options to make petrification less harsh in general, there was no intent in making the Basilisks any worse AFAIR. Aside from that, I'd love to hear (always hard to convey this via text, but I mean this unironically, I wanna see your PoV) which spells you feel were changed from really good to fairly worthless. I know spell balance (and balance in general) is ultimately at least somewhat subjective, but pretty much everyone who has played this game to death agrees that there are loads of bad spells and a bunch of *too good* spells and pretty much every tierliest or casting guide confirms that.
@ So it’s definitely a good point that my version was out of date. I’m happy to hear that the petrification issue was talked about in forums. That gives me some encouragement to try it again sometime. To be honest, I don’t remember specifically which spells were made useless or overpowered (I used the mod a bit more than a year ago) but I just remember that I had a few in BG1 that left me feeling powerless. I think another issue I had was too much too soon. I started on my “SCS Hardcore Playthrough journey” with this channel and it may have been a lot too early. I’ll probably try SRR again when I get my head on right with modded playthroughs. So this isn’t as much about the mod itself but for me.
@@Redjoy123 That's fair enough. If you install multiple mods and set the difficulty higher than what you're used to, you effectively have to relearn a whole bunch of stuff while simultaneously developing new patterns to deal with changed circumstances. Can absolutely be too much. I first tried out SR(R) by going through the Black Pits modules with the default parties, which are honestly pretty nice for a good overlook at how a total spell overhaul (or really most extensive gameplay mods) changes things due to the rapid pace at which you level and the comparatively varied challenges you face. After those I felt I had a good enough understanding to play the game proper.
@ That’s an excellent point, Black Pits is a great testing ground for rules and spells.
Aye
Totemic druid is very powerful in BG1 IMO - I like the snake and wolf pets especially for their bonus features.
@@weissblitz100 Agreed, I would like to see how long the critters last in BG2 (as far as being effective) but in BG1 they’re quite good.
@@Redjoy123 They are still good, especially the snake and wolf IMO... at level 10 they do start to trail off a bit, as that's when they stop gaining power. It's more ToB where they can be overshadowed... But never useless
Another thing that sort of counts against the druid in SOA is that you come into SOA with about 500,000 XP and are 12th level. You need another 2.5 million to go up three levels and get to 15th. So the class does stagnate for awhile while other classes are going up 6 or 7 levels more.
18 wis 18 char avenger druid so i can roleplay as a jedi consular named the emperor
"Soon, you shall call me... Master." Not sure how a true neutral alignment would work for him though... hard to believe that ol' Shev was just "maintaining the balance"
@Redjoy123 the force moves in mysterious ways. I dunno *shrugs*
Beastmaster ranger would be fixed if he could dual class into a totem druid
One thing about the he Avenger Chain Lightning, it goes through MR. It's better than the MU version.
That's wild! I had to look that up and this is true according to the Baldur's Gate Wiki, that's one I'll definitely need to try out but if that's the case then that'd be pretty damn cool. Still wish the damage would be a bit better though...
Liked the video, but could you tone down the game music? It is somewhat loud compared to your voice and is also somewhat distracting.
I may try a Totem, or Avenger. If I ever plan on only using a character in the first game. For bg2. I much prefer Fighter/Druid.
Treehuggers and shifty folks, all of them! Still, in D&D Druid-Thief was one of my most favorite multiclass or dual class mixes. 🤗
I've never made a party without Jan. He's the best companion of all time. Him and Viconia really cement this game's greatness, along with all the other things that also do that. Really, you'd need multiple tier lists for this, all depending on the main character class and alignment.
@@leadbones That is a great point, for example if a main character is a Thief/Mage, Jan may not be the best choice, even though he’s an awesome companion. Same with a pure Cleric and Viconia. Gotta build the party around that main character.
Redjoy have you thought about making a guide to mod Baldur's Gate i ask because the ones I've seen haven't been the best at explaining the process to start.
I definitely should, I know that I did a mod review as part of one of my earlier playthroughs but I definitely need to do an entire guide to it.
Three super gnolls outside High Hedge managed to get hits in on Khalid so I had to go to the big city of Beregost to find a replacement. There I found Kagain. Kagain managed to convince Garrick that stealing was for a good cause, so he snitched a cloak from the inn. Minsc and Dynaheir was appalled so I left Garrick in one of the rooms. As was planned Neera showed up to replace him. When going through Nashkel Mines the Stinking Cloud, Sleep wand, sleep spells and Paralysis Wand put everything to sleep. Being outside the Wand of Lightning became useful when Xan replaced Neera to take out the band to the North of the Mine exit.
At my opinion, shorty races are the best for the classes they can be, bonus to saves are too good. Humans are the goat, cause of dual class options. Every class is better with 7 or 9 first levels in fighter, but dual from thief is also fun. Half elves is just a race you go when you going to specific multiclass or just want to roleplay one. Evles are not that great, I'd say, but still have much more class options than shorties that is good. And half orcs + to strength is overrated, in my opinion, dwarf or gnome would be better.
@@dzn9338 That’s a good mindset, though I think that Elves are pretty good for the early game, being 90% immune to charm and sleep and getting a bonus with bows and swords, both bonuses are pretty good. I fully agree with you on everything else!
Do the tutorial u get a weapon u specialize in save character. Start main game u load with wrapon. But game deletes weapon to get around it drop weapon as soon as u load in walk around a few steps then pick it up. Got it
I think so, I’ll try that sometime!
Cleric/ranger get moon doggo. Moon doggo is only reason to be a ranger
I like Chant a lot in bg1ee. I had 4 memorized on my Cleric going through hard. It lasts so long you can cast it after your scout spot some enemies.
True and I find that it lasts long after the fight is done which is great! You don't need to worry about it dropping in the middle of a fight.
I'd donate 1000g to the temple of helm if we could get a cleric or paladin class kit that casts divine spells in the style of the sorcerers.
Ah yes, a subclass like this exists and is called Favored Soul, but in Neverwinter Nights 2.
@Antilluminati thank you. I'll have to check that out sometime.
Right, I feel like this would be an amazing Sorcerer subclass, like the Shaman but with Cleric spells and with different abilities like weapon proficiencies or armor allowances.
I know that this guide is for the base game. But I think that cleric playthroughs benefit from the expanded spell list from IWDification immensely. I’m currently on a Fighter-Cleric dual-class run and having an absolute blast with that expanded spell list. The fact that I rolled a 99 after only two minutes was just the icing on the cake.
Very nice! You are absolutely correct, IWD spells did wonders for divine casters!
Wow a 99 is amazing, I never got higher than 95 (and somehow I thought this was a soft cap that was put in place by the game creators) and I've been spending a lot of time on that character creator over the past 25 years.
Great video! Looking foward for the Mage guide! Btw, are you planing on a multi-class guide?
Thank you! I would love to do a re-do of the multi-class guide, that will probably come late this year when I fully get back with my regular recording schedule.
Are you using SCS with IWD spells? Because if you are then clerics are absolutely amazing! Almost on par with arcane casters.
It's cheesy though.. and I assume you're also using the option that allows you to instantly chain spells one after the other out of combat, like when you use Alacrity. You can't even see the portraits anymore with all the buff icons overlayed on them. 😖
@ Yeah, but some of us NEED our portraits covered... those icons are rather pretty!
Yes, SCS does have the IWD spells installed and I agree, I think they give a huge boost to divine casters. Divine Protection, Prayer, and Recitation are all amazing!
@@AntilluminatiI have that option on but prefer to use as few prebuffs as possible. What I was referring to was the spells provided by the most.
Forgive us, Pater Redjoy, for we have sinned... 😉
Yes, my child, tell me your sins...

I approve of your selections. I'm going to recommend Spell Turning as well, if you're the naughty exploit type. Spell bounced back by Spell Turning are "owned" by the enemy casting the spell at you. For example, You're facing a Lich. He casts Blind (level 1 spell) at you. Spell Turning bounces back the spell. Lich gets blinded. Which should be impossible, due to Lich immunity and magic resistance. But because the Lich "owns" the Blind spell, it affects it. 😈. Do check out WesJ's excellent discussion on Spell Turning. Limited Wish is awesome. Give your entire party Minor Globe with ONE spell. The horde of rabbits can boost your fighter mages to 25 in Strength, Dex and Con, using the SCS added Soul Eater spell. 😳😱. (Imoen casts the spell, and immediately your fighter mage casts Soul Eater on the rabbits) Finally, have Edwin cast Limited Wish. Ask for Protection from Undead Right Now! Use Viconia to Turn the vampires (Edwin has low, horrible Wisdom 😈) into an undead assault force. Also, it resets the world clock, so if you time it right, all the protections cast by that Lich (yes, I'm talking about Vangothe) EXPIRE! Use anti undead weapons for a truly cheap kill. 😈🤣😂
In regards to villains desiring low reputation: I think it would be neat if certain factions locked certain quests behind a rep wall. Maybe an order of paladins look at your rep and say you're too evil to go kill this monster for them. You can still go kill the monster, you just dont get anything from the questgiver. On the other side of the coin, a cult of demon worshippers might look at you funny if you're radiating a holy aura. In terms of game mechanics, I almost always go for high rep simply because discounts are convenient.
Also, I feel like 18 is way too high to be the breakpoint for leaving. Somewhere between 12 and 15;depending on the particular character's personal convictions and how much that character personally likes you. Kagain would probably stick around considering how much he likes discounts, but Monty seems like a curmudgeonly loner type.
What if there was an Npc dwarf who was a gold dwarf: gets 3 charges of gold skin per day. Gold skin works just like a stone skin, but costs 30 gold - reputation score to use it, so at 20 rep it only costs 10g.
@@AndrewRussell-dz8zy I get that! Having a low Reputation (or high Notoriety) should open up factions, quests, or rewards throughout the game. Here’s a story thought, what if you could only infiltrate the Bandit Camp if you have a reputation under 11 (either being low or being relatively unknown)? Otherwise, we’d have to charge in and fight everyone right away. I’m absolutely in agreement with you, there is no reason to go low rep except for evil companions, which you can go up to 17 or so. Take advantage of those prices.
@@Redjoy123 "hey boss, we brought in some new recruits. " *best john Wayne impression * "now hold it just one minute there, pilgrim. We've heard all about how you saved that dryad's tree. We've even heard tell about how you killed those worgs out by the lighthouse. And you really think you oublek wouldn't run his mouth off?" Tazo spit his chewing tobacco into a nearby spittoon and sneered. "No, sir, this bandit camp ain't big enough for the both of us." He reached for his axe, but found himself perforated with arrow fire. He was no match for Quick Draw McGraw and the Do Gooder Gang.
A roman having -9AC vs missile fire is a fine nod to the tortoise formation.
@@AndrewRussell-dz8zy Agreed, though I probably should have had my big shield and gone full sword and board.
Is there a mod that auto sorts inventory items into their proper containers? Pick up a ring and it goes directly into the gem bag, and if your lore is high enough it auto identifies it for you?
Good lord, I would love that! I feel like it could be a bit annoying if it was an automatic thing but if it was a toggled “Sort” button that would be neat.
Pierce Shield is a spell in search of a use. If you want to drop Spell Trap (if you're playing SCS) , you have Ruby Ray, which is a level 7 spell. If you want to lower magic resistance, use Pierce Magic, which you can load on Spell Trigger. Certain bosses are immune to Lower Resistance in SCS, so you NEED Pierce Magic or Pierce Shield. You can only load up Pierce Shield in Chain Contingency, and it REALLY sucks if Chain Contingency fires a triple Pierce Shields at the WRONG target. 🤬. Pierce Magic in Spell Trigger is better! Protection from Energy is highly recommended. A Berserker Mage with the Belt of Inertial Barrier and that helm in Watcher's Keep (with the horns you need to find to upgrade) and Protection from Energy is IMMUNE to ALL elemental damage and magic damage. It also stacks, so a double cast (Chain Contingency) on self as a Sorcerer makes you immune to almost all damage spells. Chaotic Commands, and you're invulnerable to most magic based encounters.😈 Power Word Blind is AWESOME. WesJ doesn't like it, because he thinks Blind the first level spell is perfectly adequate. It's not. You need PWB to punch through Lich immunity, and there are a lot of bosses that aren't immune to Blind. As long as you can get past magic resistance, you can blind them, disabling them. 🎉 Which is great. Similarly, Bigby's Clenched Fist is excellent. Due to coding, a surprisingly large number of bosses are vulnerable. One round of stun doesn't sound like much, but against Demogorgon, (yes, him too) it can be crucial. 😉
I like your appreciation of Energy Blades. EB are actually a workable substitute for Spell Strike. If you're playing SCS, you have to take down Spell Traps and Spell Turning from high level enemy mages. 4 EB will take out Spell Trap, by overloading it, and I think 2-3 will take out Spell Turning (have Protection from Magic Weapons active to tank the bounced blades. 😈) On SCS, you'll face the Battle of Ust Natha. Have your cleric load up on EB. Your sorcerer casts Spell Trap, and Improved Alacrity. As the first wave approaches, obliterate them with Dragon Breaths. (while keeping your HLAs on Quick Menu is a viable strategy for a mage PC, for sorcerers, don't use it!) cast Spell Trap and PfMW, have your cleric throw EBs at you to recharge your spells. 4 blades, and you've just regained 4 Dragon Breaths. Using this evil exploit, you can literally spam Dragon Breaths dozens ( 😳😱🤯 ) of times in particularly bad fights. The Five in Ascension at the final encounter can be obliterated just like that, except Yaga Shura. 😈😈😈
@@User_Un_Friendly THANK YOU! I acknowledge that there are a lot of other spells at that level that are great but EB is much better than people realize!
@ You're welcome. To be fair, I also criticized your mentioning of Pierce Shield, which is an awful spell. 😛
Hi Redjoy! I love your playthroughs but would it be possible to order the playlists correctly? Would very much appreciate it. No worries if it's too much hassle! 💚
Weird, I thought that they would be in order, I will go and fix that. I tried to set it up to play in the order the videos are uploaded but UA-cam must think that I meant differently... irritating. Thank you for letting me know! I'll fix that ASAP.
@@Redjoy123 Thank you! I see it happen a lot so it's definitely not just you.
@ You are welcome, I hope it is fixed now… If it’s not, please let me know, and I will find other solutions… 😏
@ LOL the smirk. Thank you, it's perfect now. I did check your other playlists and they have the same issue, but rearranging all of those does not sound fun.
@ Oh, I’ll take on the task if fixing them, that was my goal all along to have folks be able to watch straight through episodically. Thank you for letting me know!
Monks requiring Lawful alignment was I believe originally meant to reflect the discipline and structure in life required to push their minds and bodies past their normal limits
Redjoy, it is a space hampster!!
I am playing a HM Barbarian CG. Want to take Kaigan and Viconia as I do not want to fall into the same rut. Minsc is funny but his stats are not going to work with magic casters plus his rage is uncontrollable? Thank you, sir, for your work.
Sadly, I believe that Minsc's rage is incontrollable, so he'll be tough to control. When I play as him, I pretty much never use the rage just in case I need to move him around. I will say that he and Dynaheir do make an interesting combo. My plan with them is to have him get Spider's Bane (a +2 Two-handed Sword with Free Action) and have her spam multiple Web spells. He goes in and it's like a butcher in a shop, not bad!
@@Redjoy123 Do you think a Berserker can be a two handed person? Not a tank? Since I agree that Berserker is the best. Love how they can level up fast especially in BGEE. Use any armor and grandmaster in a weapon. Plays a role I think is missing in BGEE. Played with Kaigan and Viconia and they do well. Never tried Edwin.
@ Yes, I do. A two handed weapon Berserker can do very well since the Enrage ability has big defensive buffs as well as offensive buffs already. I think many prefer having more attacks per round for less damage compared to having large damage hits slightly slower (two weapons vs two handed weapons, respectively), the effectiveness is pretty much the same both ways. So yes, going actively on offense with two handed weapons works just fine for Berserkers in my humble opinion.
@@Redjoy123 Well thank you. Percy Buttercup is ready to roll with a new BGEE playthrough. Behave. 😜😜😜
