Calvin is a great guitarist. I was introduced to his playing at the shell in Memphis tn. Sadly I never got to see him live again. He will be missed. RIP.

Lost my cousin Calvin Newborn today, he was 85 years old, may he rest in peace. Years of great talent. He played with his father Phineas Newborn Sr, and his brother Phineas Newborn Jr. first, and then most of his career with Hank Crawford his best friend he told me.

So beautiful. Calvin is a class act.

Flying Calvin! Did some fine guitar work with his piano virtuoso brother back in the day.

That is some of the most musical guitar playing I've heard in quite a long time. I was very fortunate to catch Calvin playing at "Bradley's" the piano bar/jazz club in NYC on University Place some years back when he visited Manhattan and he is truly one of the underrated greats of music, not just as a guitarist, because he is much more than that. Outstanding and full of taste, soul and a hell of a sound on the instrument. Truly making that guitar sing! Bravo!!

Some of us play guitar and quite well and then a few of us set the standards for playing guitar. Calvin is in that anointed second group that shows us the way. He's simply a revelation-tone, phrasing, feel, taste-you can't play the instrument any better than this.

I think you're confusing him with Calvin Keys.

That's right Calvin. No one will ever admit to the Memphis contribution to jazz music. There are a lot Memphis haters out there. Do it yourself. Tell your story running. All the myths about classical training saving you have proven to be false. Play the blues all day in all the ways! I get it.

This is GORGEOUS...PURE soulfulness. It's up there with Jimmy Ponder's version that he did in the 1970s.

Around 30 years ago I bought the Jimmy Forrest album that featured a guitarist that grabbed my ear out of a great lineup of musicians. We had to check out the liner notes on the back to see who was making such fine music . Now all this time later thanks to UA-cam we get to see and hear more great music from Calvin Newborn. Still enjoy it so much. Thanks for posting.

This guy played at our cocktail party between our wedding and dinner and he was great. When we were in the limo going from the wedding to the dinner I told my wife All I wanted in the world was to see him playing -- and he was. This in Memphis at the Peabody Hotel...

I think this was the first song I ever sang with you, Mr. Newborn. You were playing at The King's Palace on Beale Street and you let me sit in with Charlie Wood's band. Just an old sweet song keeps Calvin on my mind. Good to see you on the UA-cam.
