Hi, I'm Paul Langcaster and this channel features clips, programmes and and features produced by Swindon Cable's local programming team. I managed the channel for many years and also presented and produced many of the programmes but there was also a great number of other talented people who worked for Swindon Cable across the years and many them feature in these clips.
The channel may have closed down in 2000 but the memories live on!

This programme was produced by Swindon Cable in 1985 and charts the frustrations of some of the men that faced the constant threat of closure of the world famous railway works, then owned by British Rail Engineering Limited. The programme was made before the announcement that the works would close in March 1986. It was re-edited to include more archive footage of the works in 2016.

I think that Hanimex building is now in the process of being demolished.
Burmah always called those figures chinthe rather than lions. I think they even called the staff magazine The Chinthe.
Owned by Telecential which were taken over by KPN Comtel/ Coventry Cable than NTL and now Virgin Media. That is one journey I have been through. Areas covered Wiltshire, Berkshire/ Reading and surrounding areas Oxfordshire, Warickshire/ Coventry and Surrounding areas, Northamptonshire, small parts of Hertfordshire and Dacorum Hemel Hempstead. It was expensive compared to the big 4 operators at the time Telewest, Nynex, Bell Cablemedia and International Cabletel, the latter taking over KPN Comtel over to become NTL. RIP Ashley Heath.
Thanks for the memories Ashley never forgotten RIP.
When i was i s bit younger i saw Princess ANN . In the Outlet.
Do an updated version of it now?
Good to see this video. I was trying to remember what was at Greenbridge before. I can remember going to Greenbridge retail park in 1997 and I think, and I can also remember going to the circus at Greenbridge when it was waste land, this must have been 1995ish but I couldn't remember what was there before.
Brilliant video Paul. You, and the other viewers, may be interested to know, my layout has three class 47s, in the GWR brunswick green, for the 150th anniversary of the GWR in 1985. 47484, 47500, and 47628. Although my layout is set in Lanarkshire, I can tell you, those three GWR 47s did visit Scotland, from time to time. In fact, all three visited Inverness, and for two days in 1986 and two days in 1988, all three were in Scotland at the same time! Was god's wonderful railway trying to spread its wings! One other thing, one of the last contracts for Swindon, before closure, was to refurbish some class 411 EMUs, southern region code 4CEP, in preparation for the Hastings - Tunbridge Wells electrification in 1986. These units were repainted as well, and gave another 20 years service. All in all, a very interesting video, on a long gone, but not forgotten, piece of railway history. Many thanks, from a railway enthusiast in Fife! Oh, and, please, subscribe to my UA-cam channel if you wish!
Hotel is there now
Loved Sky in the early days...l got to watch all the best old American shows l missed out on first time around...they also had all the best cartoons on Fun Factory & DJ Kat...l always assumed it was originally based in Holland though.
It'll never catch on.
I got out in 1987 thanks to my Dad. Maybe Swindon will be more interesting in 2080. It needs time to become attractive to people.
😂when I lived in Oxford, the local evening paper had the headline, ‘SWINDON IS A DUMP’!!
Premiere broadcast movies in stereo on satellite.
I had cable in Northampton in 1986, basically 3 itv regions, plus sky channel and super channel. It wasn't fantastic, but it was better than just using the aerial (just)
Magic
Painful to watch. Swindon now is a dump. Get out if you still can.
There should I move to I genuinely want to move but am unsure where to move to that's not as bad 😂
Agreed, town centre is like another world now.
@@InformationImportant-ho7nuIt's another country now. Whenever I go into town I rarely see another white person.
It'll never take off.
I remember when i changed to SKY digital i lost all the foreign channels i was gutted!
Especially the German channels 😉😉🤣🤣🤣
This entire video is utterly bizarre.
A sad loss bring it back!
I remember Sandfords DIY. I lived in Wootton Bassett as a kid. I also remember a grass verge planted with daffodils spelling out spring has sprung. This was on the duel carriageway before Sandfords. The Anchor butter factory was also near here. It's strange what you remember from your childhood. If I remember right the butter factory was a mustard yellow colour.
Swindon had gone the way of so many towns, crackheads and drunks. I was shocked to see the decline on my recent visit . The councils have a lot to answer for .
Locos and trains now built in Italy and Spain whilst this site is now used to sell clothes made in sweatshops, skilled men replaced with fast food staff on minimum wage . The only positive is that a lot of buildings are still there. Its very sad.
Thank you Paul and team for a great video. Really enjoyed watching this. I grew up around Swindon in the 80s and 90s. We loved it. I haven’t visited the town centre in 30 years, but will go back. Despite the inevitable changes (good and bad), I still only have good memories of Swindon now. Thank you
Cavendish Sq was built in the early 60s there was nothing there in the 50s I know because I lived in Welcome Ave and would have to go to a place to buy groceries which was at Lawns or I should say behind Lawns.
Jennings St was the best school I went to it had very good teachers Mr Safford was my class teacher and he very good.
Great video.
Thank goodness someone had the foresight to take this wonderful footage back in 1985.
I worked in David Griegs shop when her maj came to see us , I was on the third floor and looked down on her as she passed by
Tv was mono in 87 :)
the most underground/unspoken kate bush vid there is. kate doing the very first release of satellite televisions existence in the uk. not to mention this being recorded in swindon which was the testing town for it with residents given access, at this stage it was only a couple of american channels that played at early hours of the morning in the uk and was the first time british people started to see television from other countries, it was terrible to begin with but progressed it is now the biggest media company in europe now the majority of family households have sky and it is the reason we have worldwide news. absolutely insane rabbit hole and no one seems to know about it lol
Shame about The Oasis .....Real shame.
Best job I ever had.God how I miss my free rail travel.
The old Aspen House also housed Swindon's Unemployment Benefit Office until 1986.
Would love to see a new one done.
The place is so different again in 2023
For the worst
Rest well, Max.
This is wonderful, history. Thank you.
