You can also IP limit the API key so even if it leaks you at least have some sort of protection until you change it.

Thank you for the thoughtful and insightful video! I am involved with two apps, one as a solo developer that just released this week, that are in the music creation space. We are generally priced in the average of the top selling apps in our category. One app is free with a few options (sub/lifetime) to unlock all features and the newest is just a one time purchase through the app store. It might be too soon to tell but the one time purchase through the app store is doing better on revenue so far on revenue.

Don't lock existing features behind a pay wall. Just add premium AND add new special features for this premium in app purchase. Existing users don't lost anything, but can now spend money to get more features. And they will spend money because they like the app. Why they like the app? Because they using it already. 🙂 Result: No bad reviews

I wonder why you did the experiment in the first place? It's quite OBVIOUS that wouldn't work and people would be angry. People form "parasocial relationships" with things they consume, with companies they support and they consider these relationships as friendships etc. The moment you start to ask something in return for your"friendship" anyone would be confused and disappointed. If your best friend went "i won't hang with you anymore unless you pay me a burger meal/burger meal monthly" that wouldn't fly now would it? As you stated at the end: reward loyalty, reward people who've used your app and given you a steady platform to stand and then monetize those who come after OR think about monetization from the get-go. Make it so that there's always paid functionality at the beginning of the app, but something that's not required but by those who are professionals. Then slowly improve the program, adding paid and UNPAID features and make sure you take feedback from UNPAID features into considereation as well. People will pay for the features when they need them and if the app in general is well taken care of, even upaid features, that makes people trust you, so they're more willing to buy a program because they know it won't be abandoned or gone after they do.

Yeah but Nico had the most clickbait scam video title i've ever seen. You have to decide, do you want to cultivate this audience based on real, rock solid advice or do you want to make every video where you're screaming in the thumbnail, have a lambo in the background of the video and title it 'How I would market my AI SaaS in 2024 to make $600,000 MRR as a indie tech founder (my story)'? It's up to you mate but these guys are selling the dream of easy money, he literally put in the trifecta of 'AI', a specific amount of money and prmoises the secret of how it's easy, after all he built it in 24hours! If he could replicate it he wouldn't be shilling on UA-cam. He's just using a story that might not even be real to drop a course.

On one of my latest apps where I did free->paid transition, I even went one step further and showed grandfather/legacy users a „thank you“ screen on first startup TELLING them they will have free premium features for ever. Resulted in very positive mails and reviews giving love back. You should try it :)

Really interesting 💡 It'll probably avoid disasters for me too as I've been planning to follow your strategy! In future apps, rather than using an onboarding flag you could use analytics to track the version installed and keep one cohort of users as "never show paywall". You could still show them ads so you're monetizing them.
