Glider : Avian Puma
Wind : W to SW, 15-20mph
Two flights - mostly fighting to get to a decent height for top landing. Some thermals coming through, but only good for a few hundred feet before they broke up. Nearly caught by the wind gradient on the first top landing, but managed a good quick flare to land on my feet.
Apologies to anyone who is looking for an exciting video :)

Glider : Avian Puma Wind : light, S First task in the Sports class, British HG Nationals at Chabre, France. 35km task through several waypoints landing at the competition camp site. Started very nervously for me, but as the day progressed it became great fun. Learned a whole lot of lessons about competition flying. My first goal flight (in fact first time I've made it passed more than one turnp...

Glider : Avian Puma Wind : 25mph at takeoff, easing to virtually nothing later Not much ridge lift, but some thermals. Took one thermal back behind the ridge to about 900ATO (2200ASL) before I fell out and tried to return to the ridge. Didn't make it so top landed some way back.

Glider : Avian Puma Wind : 15-20mph, NW Brave pilots took off earlier into light wind and thermals and some managed to make it away from the hill. I waited until the wind increased so soaring the ridge was easier, but the thermals were broken up and I wasn't able to gain more than about 600-700ft above takeoff. A pleasant flight non the less and I top landed after a few spits of rain.

Glider : Avian Puma Wind : 25mph, W Waited all day for the wind to ease, then 5 gliders flew. One made it down the Mallerstang valley and others managed up to 2000ft ATO. Pretty smooth air and good thermals. Massive wind gradient very close to the ground on top landing which stalled me and I dropped a wing just a fraction of a second before I was about to flare - no harm done, but took me by su...

Glider : Avian Puma Wind : W, 15-20mph At this windspeed, the site should have been excellent but instead was variable - a couple of decent thermals, then several minutes of sink and needing to scratch for anything on the ridge. After 25 mins, the sink won out and I bottom landed. No idea what all the gurning was about as I came into land, but the lesson learned is to keep the neck warmer aroun...

Glider : Avian Puma Wind: SW, 20mph Plenty ridge lift but thermals were small and choppy - not much to work with. 3 flights so good takeoff/landing practice. Tried to extend the angle of dangle lines - got me closer to the basebar but struggled stretching my neck to get a good look around.

Glider : Avian Puma Wind : 25 mph, NNW on takeoff but probably nearer WNW when in the air. Very rough conditions, choppy thermals and strong wind. Managed about 35 minutes then top landed.

Glider : Avian Puma Wind : 20mph NW, rising to 30mph Plenty punchy thermals which got us to 3500-4000ft. Some battery issues on camera and phone, so lost some video and track data - maybe due to the cold (especially above 3000ft).

Glider : Avian Puma Wind : ESE, 22mph turning more SE on landing Smooth takeoff, but quite choppy as altitude increased. Cloudbase was probably around 3000ft but I bailed out around 2300ft when it became very rough. Battery on the main 360 camera failed before landing. The landing field slopes down in a S/SE direction, so I had to land crosswind. More rough air coming into land nudged me downhi...

Glider : Avian Puma Wind : WNW, 20mph Couple of flights in ridge lift. Both landings were not the best. First landing I made a quick decision which meant I had to turn over 180 degrees to get into wind (did this to avoid sinking air). Second landing I struggled to turn on the downwind leg (turbulence) so went further back than planned. That far back the wind gradient was massive which caught me...
yup, that's a crash
that glider looks sweet
Yes, the Avian Puma is excellent.
Hi Doug, does Pete Helliwell usually compete in the British Nationals? He quite often comes to New Zealand to fly in the N Z Nationals. Great to see your videos thank you.
@@robertneale5835 Yes, Pete was at the nationals. He was competing in the Class 1 comp. I was in the Sports class. I think he said he was working in Switzerland over the summer.
No audio vario?
@@ralphjohnson4041 No decent microphone on the camera!
Man looks like you had a great flight. You probably already know this. If you can work on getting that chin down to the bar then you will have more room for inputs in your arms making it eventually less effort. Greater input Authority. Cant complain about that take off looked far better than most around here. Cheers for making the video.
Bravo :) Greetings from Greece 🪽
Well done! Looked like a really enjoyable flight.
Another successful task, well done
Brilliant, well done, such a shame about smudge, just going to watch day 2 and sub
Been a while since I've been to England. But that dies not l look like. ENGLAND. Where was this?
@@The1KDog1 it's the Charbre takeoff, south face. A few miles from Laragne-Monteglin in southern France.
Well done Doug ,,seems like all those Tailbridge flights have paid off,,dont know how you do it,I cant get away from family taxi,.shopping, drains blocked, car repairs,I need to put my foot down.
@@tbrownhill Thanks, got to say there were other things I should have been doing last week, but this was booked months ago.
Well done Doug brilliant ❤
Fantastic Doug ! Over 10grand😮 ...a memorable flight 👍
Awesome
Nice! What was the wind? Looks pretty strong!
Probably about 20mph. Strange conditions though, could have been some out of phase wave messing with the ridge lift.
Looked like you out climbed everyone Nice flying
That first swoop on launch looked a bit hairy! I have taken the lazy route, just finished building a Sub70, Ill be launching just around the corner at Edisford... Not in 25+mph winds though :)
Yes, I launched into some bad air there. It was much the same for the whole flight but certainly not much fun when it's that close to the ground. Good luck with the sub70 - there are quite a few based up at St Michael's airfield near garstang
@@dougneil3431 I have looked at St Michaels... Not sure how kindly they would take to a somewhat rouge pilot. I have 20+ years Paragliding and Paramotoring but very little experience hang gliding (nothing with power) Need to cut my teeth at Pilling (make sure I can accurately place my landings) I might head up there if I find the sport reasonably trivial... Experienced pilots are worth their weight in gold for inspiring confidence in mixed conditions.
Nice one Doug, and well narrated. You never forget your first XC, they're something really special!
A good day Doug nice to meet you
👍👍
ooops
Ouch! Hope all ok, you enjoying the space ship?
Ah yes, no problem. All my stuff is covered with smelly mud though - it's taken all afternoon today cleaning my electronics. It was always going to be a tricky landing in that wind direction, but after 6 weeks without a flight I wasn't going to miss the day. Puma is great, getting used to it now.
Well done on getting out Doug,,,looks like one of my landings, nice to see youre ok,,,
Back in the day, I had a similar 'nose a little too high, stall after takeoff' crash only it was a 40' bluff launch with 15kt wind and I was a little higher when I blew over and landed upside down back in the set up area. No injuries, only a broken leading edge on my glider, and tiny tear on the sail of someone else's glider. I was very lucky and the lesson was learned.
Well done Doug,,,looks like you hit a bit of sink on that 2nd landing,,,,gotta get up there and get back flying,,,with some help from your good self,, Regards Tony Brownhill.
Yes, a bit of turbulence stopped me turning into wind when I wanted so ended up further back. Virtually no wind down at ground level back there. You're more than welcome to come up - that telegram group is where the good days are mentioned first.
Looks like a great location. Does it get crowded with PGs?
Great location for landing practice, really big top and bottom landing space. It can get busy with PGs in a lighter wind. The ridge at Tailbridge isn't massive but if you get high and fly over to the Mallerstang ridge then there is tons of room (6km ridge).
This terrible takeoff/crash was actually salvageable, but a pilot with the skills needed to do that would have never ventured into strong conditions without launch assistant or moving to the actual launch point without being hook-in. At .39 seconds the pilot is actually so far out of shape that he is actually accelerating the crash. Pro tip. If you don't have an assistant, move to your launch position and hook-in there. If you can't safely hook-in then conditions are screaming at you that you shouldn't be trying to launch.
LMAO
such amazing view
Great footage Doug youre gonna have to help me get back in the air not flown for 3 years covid, lack of drive, old age,,will you let me know when you are going again,,so I can tag along, Regards Tony.
Yes Tony, best to watch the Pennine hangies telegram group - if we go it's always discussed in there. You'll be more than welcome.
Hi just out of interest what camera type and camera rig did you use to get those panning shots was it remote operated?
I have an insta360 x2 camera. It shoots in 360 degrees then after I have landed I use the phone app to pan and zoom the video.
Thanks for sharing Doug, you managed to get to the cloud base at Mynd. I was frustrated to endlessly punt along the ridge so I went down to the task when I was still well below the cloud base, I was in the decent thermal and didn't want to lo lose it though. It paid off. I was in the cloud base and on the way to goal shortly after.
Cheers Maciej. Yes, if I had just flown straight after getting to cloudbase I'd have got much further. Been checking your track and you did really well.
Thats a 50 min drive from my cabin Doug I am to do my first xc,,,landing outside my home thats about 50 miles ,,ps I dont expect to do it first time, next time youre down this way let me know and I can help with retrieve,or just phone me and I will take you back to your car.
Ooooh, now thats tempting. I've not done an XC since my first one last year.
well done Doug you sure are getting about, and hours airtime .I must start getting back, into it,,even though money tight now I have retired.
Yes, I've been lucky this week. Free time matched good weather days.
its good that the crash happened in the very initial stages. In fact it never really took off.
Nice one Doug,,,hoping to get up soon,,,once I got these Peregrine chicks feeding for themselves,Regards Tony.
Looked great from the ground as well. I think you had the best bit of weather today.
Thanks Pete, it was a hard workout but I was lucky to take off when I did.
The pilot did the editing too.
The title is misleading. The wind lifted the hang glider before he attempted to takeoff. All of the comments suggesting how to correct his flight in the air aren't hitting the mark.
Cross wind take offs are never a good idea!
I've seen two people die doing similar. Thanks for sharing - that way everyone can learn from mistakes in a less painful way.
Thanks for sharing. These videos are an inspiration to those of us who are embarking on their journey into learning to hang glide.
Thanks Justin, its not an easy thing to learn how to hang glide but absolutely well worth the effort. There is no better feeling than reaching cloudbase using just the power of nature.
Perfect take off and text book landing. Great flight mate. Wish i was there.
When in doubt pull in and level the bar
I've done that a few times, those little chicken legs can't run that fast.😅
Poor instruction and poor airmanship
thats just stupid do it again
If the left wing is lifting, point he glider to the left. If the right wing is lifting, point the glider to the right. When the wings are level and the direction your pointed isn't good for launch, don't launch.......
Doesn't even look like the pilot attempted a take off run, looks like he just got hit by a strong sideways gust before he even attempted to launch.
Ice launch and the site looks so nice. I prefer to stay on my base tube until the last moment as I think it gives better control authority.
