Carol Thanks for the history, I grew up on 23rd St. The Lakeshore Teacher's College was a big part of my life. My parents had many of the college girl students boarding in our home. As a child going to 20th St School we went for teaching sessions at the college. Thanks for the memories!

Hello Casey, We are deeply saddened to hear of your experience and the trauma associated with the site. The Lakeshore Grounds Interpretive Centre is not affiliated with the Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital. Our mission as a heritage institution is to research, preserve, and share the history of the site, which includes the history of mental health care as it relates to this institution. We aim to share the history informed and with respect to the lived experience of the patients and staff, and the built heritage that has shaped the area to preserve history for future generations. We’re always learning. If you would ever be interested in sharing your story as a way to help build the archive of information relating to the Hospital, we can be reached at info@lakeshoregrounds.ca

Monsterous treatment modalities explained and celebrated.

The goal of the presenters was to bring awareness to historical treatments in contrast to popular portrayals. They contextualize these treatments as they were introduced at the Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital, drawing on the available records. We suspect both presenters would be surprised about the "celebrated" portion of your comment since it is not consistent with the approach they take in their research.

Hi Marlene - it sounds like you’re describing the mental health program that operated out of one of the cottages on the south-east of the campus in the early 1980s. This was a separate program that was not affiliated with the Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital - it just used the buildings. The Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital closed in September of 1979 - the official rationale presented to the Legislative Assembly focused on an incident in 1978 in which a patient lost their life in a fire. The argument was presented the the buildings were a fire risk but too costly to repair due to their age. In reality, the move towards deinstitutionalization had begun and Lakeshore would only be the first of many hospitals to close in Ontario.
