expansion tank is filled to proper level (half of it is just regular air to start with). the majority of bubbles are normal air as the coolant is naturally expanding due to heating up. slowly more combustion gases are mixed in and eventually the fluid turns yellow, which means the head gasket is bad.

there should be no air in the system, expansion tank is filled to the brim with more water on top by using this jug. at the time i had a bad cylinder head gasket and those tiny little bubbles that you see (view fullscreen) are most likely an indication of this problem. i have not repeated the test with a good head gasket, so it's not 100% conclusive but it can be a promising indication :)
