Septa Heavy Rail, LRV's and PCC's
Septa (Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority) runs a diverse collection of transit routes in and around Philadelphia. This video concentrates on the routes out of 69th st terminal in Upper Darby PA and the subway/surface routes on the southwest side of the city. The Norristown high-speed line gained fame as one of the last interurban lines in the country. This grade separated route at one time hosted the famed Electroliners after the North Shore was shut down. The two remaining trolley routes out of 69th st are on a private right of way with stone station buildings. We will visit the Media line which is the more scenic of the two. The Market - Frankford Subway/Elevated terminates at 69th st as well. The majority of this video will show the subway-surface trolley routes during several PCC fan trips. This system is a traditional trolley system with most track in the street. The routes all converge at 40th st and run to Center City Philadelphia via a tunnel under Market St. The Majority of this video was taken during several West Jersey Chapter N.R.H.S. fan trips and all runbys are photo stops and covered some trackage that no longer exists in 2024. There's a thin young kid that can be seen several times near the camera man (My Dad) that is yours truly. As a 15-16-year-old kid in the 1992-1994 time period when this was taken.

The Arrow IIIs are old, the Multilevel’s are certainly not old, and Bombardier still has the same basic design for sale in there catalogue. 20 years is also pretty young for most railroad rolling stock, so that’s not saying much. 40 years should be the expected lifespan of most locomotives and passenger cars.

Turboliners were fine. Not sure why they had to remove them.

Is the "baggage car" that the FL9's pull off at Albany an HEP generator or something vs an actual baggage car I'm guessing?

@mgzuck It was a HEP generator as far as I know. If you look at the shot In Albany, It seems Rev up, so to speak, as the locomotive throttles up, which is interesting.

The then-new genesis engines appear at the end of video. Unit No. 203. On November 18, 1993, Metro-North placed an order for 30 new dual-mode locomotives which soon became known as the P32AC-DM. Four of these new locomotives would be owned by the CDOT and would wear a NH heritage paint scheme, with white for the top half and a white line going down the front and stops right below the first set of headlights and a spec down the sides and back, black for the middle portion, red for the bottom portion, a skinny white line in between the red and black again for the skinny line just above the undercarriage. The first completed unit, #201, was unveiled to the public as part of a ceremonially unveiling of the new locomotives on February 25, 1995. #201 then went into passenger service on May 3, 1995. Amtrak was receiving a fleet of 18 P32s to run on their empire routes to Poughkeepsie and Albany NY out of Penn Station in Manhattan NYC. These were numbered 700-717. The final four P32s, Nos. 228, 229, 230 and 231, were delivered to Metro-North in September of 2001. The last of the FL-9s were retired in October 2001 after the final P32AC-DMs were delivered for service.
