I'll Miss You Kansas - Solo Bikepacking on the Prairie Spirit Trail
I set out on a solo overnight bikepacking ride from Ottawa, KS and rode 25 miles on the Prairie Spirit Trail to Garnett, KS. I camped at a little lake south of town called Crystal Lake.
This was a bitter sweet adventure and it'll be the last one I do in Kansas for a while as I'm moving to Colorado at the end of the month. I've longed to live next to the mountains and I'm finally making it happen. Kansas has been good to me, I'll miss my friends here, but I'm excited for adventures in a new place. Peace out Kansas. Fort Collins, here I come.

Last Adventure of My 40's - Solo Backpacking In Missouri
Переглядів 95011 місяців тому
I turn 50 at the end of the month and I wanted to get one more backpacking trip in while I'm still in my 40's. I traveled over to Missouri to do a 17 mile, two night loop in the Paddy Creek Wilderness. Along the hike, I ruminate on bluetooth speakers, drinking yellow water, and the idea of turning 50. In the end, I decide that while turning 50 does indeed blow, I'm going to focus on what I'm gr...
Backpacking 12 Miles On The Buffalo Peaks Loop Of Colorado

Back in October, Jenna and I noticed that Colorado was going to get 4 days of sweet, warm weather and then the snow was supposed to start. We didn't hesitate, packed our gear and headed west to get one more backpack trip in. We hiked the 12.5 mile Buffalo Peaks Wilderness Loop on the Rich Creek Trail and spent two nights at 11,400ish ft. We had blue skies, warm fires, and below freezing nights....

We drove from Lawrence, KS to Cumberland, MD to start our amazing 6 day adventure on the C&O Canal Trail. The trail was dry, the sights were many, and we had blue skies the entire way. On day 6, we made it to the mile zero marker in D.C.(not easy to find) and spent a couple of days going to museums before hopping on the Amtrak to get back to our car in Cumberland. Our dog Millie is 15 years old and last year she had to have her spleen removed. We thought that might be the end of her backpacking career, but she just keeps rockin' and rollin', so no time to waste, we got back out to the mountains. The Buffalo River, located in Northern Arkansas, was the first National River to be designated in the United States. It's wild, beautiful, and is one of my favorite places to adventure. The last 25 miles of the Buffalo has no take outs, so once you put in, you're committed to the end and because of this, there are zero day floaters and no crowds of rowdy drunks(we get to be the rowdy drunks all...

    You were right man! Just got back last night, I ended up going counterclockwise..and took that cut-through.. so alltrails said it was right under 13 miles (12.6).. an awesome trail. I camped at the water crossing (about 6.5 miles in) and ran Into 4 or 5 sets of hikers, and 2 different groups of horse riders.. I will be going back soon! -Alex

      @@arkansasalex7288 Hey no problem, I love chatting about the Big Piney! I think clockwise is the way to go. Do you have a map of the trail? www.alltrails.com/trail/us/missouri/big-piney-trail ...Here's a map that shows the mileage and shows that cutoff trail (at 3.5miles in). If you take the cutoff, it will take you right down to the Little Paddy Creek which is always running and there are some good spots to camp right down there close to the creek. Have a great hike! I'm actually heading down there Nov. 8th!

      @briangoodman8990 yes I have alltrails, I'll have to take a closer look at it, so if I go clockwise, and then take that cut off.. I'll find some nice camping spots there.. sweet. I was trying to decide where to go this weekend between big piney or back to the north sylamore creek trail. The sylamore creek one isn't a loop tho, which makes logistics more complicated.

    • @briangoodman8990
      @briangoodman8990 5 місяців тому

      Hey Kai! That will be a great float for you and your friends. The most important thing is to know the river’s flow rate. If it’s too low, you’ll be dragging and if it’s too high, there won’t be any sandbars to camp on. I was out on it last weekend and it was flowing at 6500cfs and it was perfect. Anything above 8000cfs and there won’t be any sandbars. The Friends of the Kaw website(www.kansasriver.org) is a great resource. They provide a link to a map that shows up to date flow rates as well as a map showing all of the river access points and hazards. At mile 14.8 there is a low-head dam that requires you to carry boats about 100 yards to get around it and back on the river. Other than that, it’s an easy relaxing ride down stream. Let me know if you have any other questions. Always happy to chat about kayaking the Kansas!

      Hi Lissa, happy to help. We camped in the hiker/biker campsites which are primitive. They are spaced out about every 10 miles along the entire trail, making it really easy to find camping and they are right next to the trail, right on the Patomac River. Most of them have a couple of picnic tables, sometimes a port-a-potty, a hand pump water spigot, but no showers. We used the spigots to freshen up, but it wasn't quite shower fresh! We're backpackers as well and are used to going days without showers, so having those spigots did kind of feel like a luxury for us. I think there are some pay campsites along the way that may have showers, but they'd be off trail a bit and I don't know how many or how far apart they are. We stayed at an Airbnb in Harpers Ferry for two nights to rest/site-see and that's really the only time we were "clean" between Cumberland and D.C. We were pretty grimy when we rolled into our hotel in D.C., but for us, it's part of an adventure and you sure do appreciate a good shower afterwards! Sorry for the rambling, hope this helps some. Good luck!

    I have plans of biking on sections of the Great Alleghany Passage Trail and the C&O Canal Trail in 2024. Throw in the Western Maryland Trail also. I hiked on sections of these trails in the last few years and wanted to do more than 6 miles, turn around, and go back. I will go 20 miles, turn around, and go back with a bicycle. I like Little Orleans area. Putting it on my destination list for the trip.

      No matter if it's 12 miles on foot or 40 on a bike, it's the adventure that counts! Good luck in 2024!

      Hey Ben, Ottawa has a really nice covered parking lot downtown that is totally free. Cheers.
