Will Star Trek: The Next Generation Be Good? | The Re-Trek Review
"BANG THE GONG" I think this episode was missing God showing up, oh and a floating orb for good measure. Gene really dropped the ball on this one. I'm with ya Will i rather liked this one, Lwaxana Troi is a fun character to watch and she brings a lot of life to the show. Loved the Cat Calendar obviously. I liked the episode I didn't wince once while watching it so it gets a 👍. The wedding dinner sets look straight outta the dollar store, plastic ass forks. They just forgot about the Psychic link plot point Caleb, don't think about it 😅. I'm really digging watching Caleb descend into despair as he watches more. Nothing makes you realize how long a season is until u marathon season 1 TNG. Thanks for the review as always guys I laughed a lot watching this one.
@@Cap_Olimar Thank you so much! We really appreciate your support and kind, kind words. An OG fan. I look forward to discussing your comment with Caleb during our recording of “Datalore”.
What does this have to do with Star Trek?
@@PaulLester-t6x There’s images of this taking place within the Star Trek universe. Hence the title.
1st season of next gen is unwatchable.
@@Mozart12201 Haha, I think Caleb agrees with you!
i like 1. season
@@jakajakman Then you like horrible acting and brutally bad scripts.
@@jakajakman Yeah, there’s some decent episodes in this stretch. Thanks for following along.
Correct
C'mon Majel loved chewing up the scenery.
@@matthewgilmore4307 Oh yeah, she definitely commands a room.

Napoleon Pigman Bayonets Worf! Had a great time this week, de Lancie, Patrick, and Frakes are all doing a great job this week. I believe I'm like Will in that my knowledge of Q elevates the episode but he's more or less correct that this is how he acts from now on. Gene must have insisted that all the planets in Next Gen look straight outta the 60s, foam rocks and Green Screen skies. Only like 10 seconds of cringe when Worf yells "this is sex!" and Geordi looks at Tasha. Also remember that that child is still dead, thanks for the review as always guys!
+@Cap_Olimar I thought so too. I didn’t want to dampen Caleb’s feelings, since he’s new to it all. Plus, I enjoy hearing his first-takes, because I was like 4 when I was watching TNG. And wow, yeah, thanks for that reminder. Thanks, Captain! 😄
The Picard Manuever! Ah the Ferengi my favorite aliens, not the worst one this time. I rather liked the episode Picard sounds right in this one and it developes his character. Will is right that Picards charisma and the Ferengi are miles better with there behavior and mannerisms. I liked the Ferengi first officer and the Riker dynamic. Will should know what the "Real" Picard Manuever is (it's them pulling down their shirts when they stand up lol). Oh Wesley I don't loathe ya but your ain't the best part of the show sorry not sorry. Thanks for the review as always guys.
@@Cap_Olimar Haha, I do know that’s the “real” Picard maneuver. 😄😉 We really appreciate you watching along, sticking with us, and commenting. We look forward to talking about your comments on the Pod.
PDA Planet! Loved seeing the Wesley clip from the top rope. He really destroyed that new plant and he didn't give a damn. I don't believe Wesley was sorry at all he only cares about how cool he looked. Picard is at fault here, he sent him on the sex planet to see if it was okay for children, the most obvious wingman is 15 year old Wesley. Gene was pushing the bounds with this one and the god orb/plot was straight outta ToS. It's Cringe thanks for the episodes as always!
@@Cap_Olimar Absolutely right! Thanks for following along and commenting as always!
The all-powerful alien who's mischievous pranks can help, or hurt, given circumstances. "Q" is a cliché character and represents lazy storytelling in my opinion. The popularity of "Q" among Star Trek fans reveals just how out of step I am with the fandom. "The Squire of Gothos", by any other name, still plays out the same to me. "Hide and Q" keeps reminding me that some TNG episodes are just standard television fare covered by a colorful sci-fi candy shell. Just my opinion, hope we're still friends!
@@eddstarr2185 Haha, absolutely! We welcome thoughts like this on the channel. I’m not really a fan or a hater of Q, but he doesn’t bother me as much as others are bothered by him. I’m sure Caleb will agree with your sentiments. Thank you so much for your comment!
This is wonderful timeline done in a intelligent thoughtful way!
@@bonnienichalson5151 Thank you so much! I appreciate your kind words more than you know.
No, TOS: Bread and Circuses occurred on a planet in System 892, not Earth 1945
@@jamesonaash7178 True! But that episode gives credence to the Nazi Regime being a reality on Earth in 1945.
The Munsters Today wasn't a reboot, it was the original characters, they went into suspended animation for 20 years and woke up in 1990, the most notable actor (to me) was Eddie Munster's (er, actor) he went on to play the mysterious "kid with the grey hair" in Eerie Indiana
@@tigerbread78 Jason Marsden, right?
@thedaystromholodeck Yes, I didn't know he also did the voice of Peter in Peter Pan and the Pirates, by far the best version I've ever seen
@ Yeah, he’s great. I love him as Max in A Goofy Movie also, haha.
When TOS aired in 1966, I was too little to understand how & why television was made. As the years went by, I got an earful of the inner workings of TV as an industry. Creating a TV show has great appeal, but the production side of TV is like an assembly line, ruled by deadlines and money. Like TOS, TNG saved resources by using "plot-on-a-shelf" or "story helper", where creators use standard ideas common in entertainment. "The Battle" feels like a contrived storyline using the Ferengi as antagonists. This episode is just filler to me, something quick and easy thrown together just to keep to the production schedule - like Sci-Fi Bisquick. This is the good/bad nature of formula TV, sometimes you wait a whole season for that one gem of an episode.
@@eddstarr2185 “Sci-Fi Bisquick”, I really enjoy that. But yes, as you saw, we totally agree. Decent concept, interesting mystery, but nothing of depth. Thank you for the comment and following along!
One of the outstanding features of television in the 1980's was the rise of Cable TV. The modest moral conventions of the 1960's was giving way to a new 24-7, liberated (sexy), push-the-boundaries kind of narrative that the new cable channels offered subscribers. Even Ted Turner's WTBS Atlanta Superstation was adding pressure to traditional TV, allowing TNG, as a first-run syndication series instead of via a network broadcaster, a new freedom to explore ideas about religion, social norms, even politics. Visiting a "Playboy Mansion" planet was typical '80's.
@@eddstarr2185 That’s a great point. I always forget this was a syndicated program. Thanks so much for the comment!
@@thedaystromholodeck The stage was set for the 1980's to celebrate the 20th anniversary of iconic TV shows from the 1960's. Along with TNG there was "The New Monkees", "The Munsters Today", "Still the Beaver: The New Leave It To Beaver", "Life with Lucy", "War of the Worlds: The Television Series (1988)", "The New Lassie", "The New Adam-12" . . . you get the picture! TNG had plenty of company but these reboots were cliché factories with predictable plots and cookie-cutter characters.
@@eddstarr2185 So interesting to think that TNG was just intended to be a celebration of TOS, and is now one of the cornerstones of the entire franchise.
@@thedaystromholodeck You are so right! TNG saved Star Trek for the 21st century and new fans join the Star Trek family every year.
Will you be covering the short treks? I thought they were pretty good. But, They kind of came and went, don’t see much talk about them.
@@Valspartame_Maelstrom I may show Caleb “Ephraim and Dot” and “Children of Mars”, but 90% of them are related to Discovery, and we’re not currently talking about that series. Maybe down the line though. Thanks for asking! The ‘Very Short Treks’ I plan on showing him eventually.
Hello
@@Valspartame_Maelstrom Hello! Thanks for commenting!
Also they play up the murder and consumption of one of the diplomats as a funny scene. Absolutely insane. Almost forgot to mention that.
@@Cap_Olimar It was absolutely insane. Literally felt like a comedy or something.
Plotporter! Will the Gene trivia really brings me down each week man, its not your fault you're just telling it how it is. Good point Caleb on Picard immediately acting suspicious, and he tells Beverly for some reason. I like the Aliens and your right that the Snakes looked way better. I thought the dog alien was hitting on Tashar Yar maybe when he talks about the "big meal" honestly im not sure about that scene. I wish the episode focused more on the alien politics and less on the mystery lighting alien. Hopefully the next episode has shorter skirts thanks for the review as always.
@@Cap_Olimar Yeah, it honestly is a bummer. Makes Gene hard to enjoy. 🤷🏻♂️ Oh well. Thank you so much for all the comments. I look forward to talking to Caleb about them all.
"My mother hung herself" that's some trash too, thanks for bringing it up. I much preferred her appearance here, it worked for me.
@@Cap_Olimar S2 of Picard in general was abysmal. Maman Picard is the only true mother of Jean-Luc.
Ludicrous Speed! First off your absolutely right I skipped Code of Honor fuck that shit. Now that Caleb has had a few episodes with the Wunderkin Wesley Crusher what does he think of our modern day Mozart? Wtf with Tash Yar's backstory, Yikes! Denise gets the short end of every stick. Episodes alright probably the best so far, the major problem I had was the stakes felt pretty low. The ticking clock element of the Traveler "dying" worked I guess but not my favorite. Dianna is useless again. Pretty good for Season 1. Thanks for the review as always!
@@Cap_Olimar This is great! Caleb and I will definitely be talking about this.
One of the ideas from critics reviews of Star Trek that fascinates me is, "sci-fi fans don't like sci-fi". What fans really want is Action/Adventure, Mystery/Thriller, Romance/Romantic Comedy, Horror; all presented with a thin coating of Sci-Fi. Studios and broadcast networks know that sci-fi must be combined with an additional genre, especially to attract Sponsors (to pay for everything). The Klingons were stand-ins for communist/bad guys due to pushback from '60s NBC, and Roddenberry was pressured to comply. TNG was a chance to start fresh, with a new outlook.
@@eddstarr2185 What a fascinating outlook on Sci-Fi. I get, at the end of the day, that it is a TV show and it has to make money for the studios and networks, but I find typically the reason why shows are terminated early in their run is because of studios and networks meddling too much. Bizarre. Thanks for the comment!
Bullshite. Time war
My earliest memories of watching television go back to 1959, and the idea of an area in our universe where "Thought becomes Reality" has been presented to me in other TV shows over the years, including some Saturday morning cartoons. It's enough to make me wish I had kept a diary or personal journal as proof, so you can imagine my delight with "Where No One Has Gone Before". And like the Krell civilization of Altair IV in "Forbidden Planet", undisciplined thoughts made real can lead to horror and disaster. The Enterprise got lucky!
@@eddstarr2185 How cool! A journal in general kept for 65+ years would be pretty amazing. To have such precise notes and facts on things. But yes, absolutely! Any one on the crew could thought of the Warp Core rupturing or their oxygen supply depleting. Though never addressed, the Traveler may have protected them from life-ending thoughts.
@@thedaystromholodeck I still remember, "The Man with the Power", from 1963: ua-cam.com/video/AsnB9oxMcz8/v-deo.htmlsi=feTH2tE9fu5tO0uG

I’ve always liked this episode. Everything about the traveler peaked my curiosity.
@@saahir18 Definitely an interesting character and a fun story. Feels like classic Trek across the board. Thanks for the comment!
Bad. I never rewatch this episode ever, it's what springs to mind when I think of the worst star trek episodes of all time. I really like Will's point that the vaccine is talked about but the disease is never shown, like that old movie trope Tell Dont Show. Why does Troi sell out Tasha like that, why does it matter at all! Picard acts weirdly accusitory towards his Chief of Security like she wanted to be abducted. I'm glad Will brought up that Season 1 isn't totally lacking decent trek but we sure haven't gotten to any yet. These episodes are so starved for character moments whoch would be nice for ya know season 1 of your show. It's a shit episode thanks for the Review as always guys, keep it up.
@@Cap_Olimar Absolutely the worst, right? It needed to be totally scrapped. We really appreciate your comment and support of the show.
Ferengi Laser Whip! Can't argue with Caleb on this one, better than last week. I loathe the Ferengi, I think they are Gene at his worst and I really hate the way they move in this episode, I like the design but if DS9 didn't exist I'd hate em all. I think I discovered the problem with Picard on season 1 and that is he is an asshole, he has no patience for Data and forgets Wesley exists. Worf is great from the start cause Dorn found his voice already, Gordi acts weird with his yippee shit.Denise gets the worst treatment of anyone and the more I learn the more I understand why. They end the episode in classic ToS fashion with the crew yucking it up at the end. Thanks for the review as always guys.
@@Cap_Olimar I couldn’t agree with your sentiments more. There are many episodes in Season One that just straight up suck. Thanks for sticking it out with us and commenting as always!
Just came across your podcast, and now I'm hooked.
@@saahir18 Sweet! Thank you so much!
I hate this episode. It's so bad. He wouldn't be building thousands of Datas any more than having Picard having kids would be him building another Picard. They'd have their own experiences, training, value just as he does. It's such a stupid argument.
@@DblOSmith I can totally understand and agree. Sorry that it makes you hate this episode though.
@@thedaystromholodeck Hate was a strong word. I don't HATE the episode. I think the debate itself is great. It's just one of the few times I strongly disagree with Picard. ...and comparing it to slavery has me rolling my eyes every time.
Not "he' of course, but the Federation's equivalent of CyberDyne. A race of beings declared property with no rights of their own. As we would see later this was what was done with sentient holograms.
@@DblOSmith I know what you mean. It could have been better written dialogue as well as a more realistic court proceeding that wasn’t just surface-level aggrandizing.
@@fmlazar Very much so. I have always wondered though how Trek would deal with something like CyberDyne or such.
Honestly, this whole episode should have moot, for several reasons. 1) Being that when Data was first found and turned on, Starfleet would have done numerous and highly detailed scans of Data. All of that information on file at Starfleet Command, more than enough to reconstruct more Datas to test and figure out how to make more! 2) All the Commander from Starfleet would have to do is request data from the transporter logs for Commander Data. More that enough to study and make more Datas! And heck, add that information to what Starfleet already has on Data! So, shut-up and stop this nonsense and start making more!
@@christophern.stevens7166 Haha, I’ve always wondered the same thing. I really appreciate you spelling this all out. 🖖🏻
This situation was particularly realistic. The only thing saving Data is that this takes place in the late 2300s. Today, Data wouldn't stand a chance!
@@LostAnFound That is sadly very true!
Perhaps, perhaps not.
Not at the present time. When “elitists” see humans as cattle, a commodity, a thing to be exploited… Data would not stand a chance. Maybe in the future, after another Great War…. But then, that is what free thinkers desire. Just a chance to exist without being bothered by one’s who believe they are greater than others.
Ok edgelord, calm down

Whst exactly hss thid to do with Star Trek?
It is a major battle involving the naval ship, USS Enterprise. That naval ship is visible in Star Trek: Enterprise, as well as other shows. This is a part of that ship’s history.
Absolutley nothing, some clown is trying to make (poorly) a connection from the WW II USS Enterprise aircraft carrier and the science ficton program from the 1960's.
@@jenningsrozzell7557 Close. Try the 2000’s series.

@@KalimombuMBanga Ain’t that the truth!
Season one had its share of clunkers, and this is one of them. Luckily the quality of the writing did improve quite a bit over the seasons. Season two had several really good episodes. By season 3 they had fleshed out the characters and their backstories a lot and they were off to the races.
@@JustWasted3HoursHere Yeah! I look forward to Caleb getting to experience better TNG episodes. Thanks for the comment!
"Sir, I protest. I am not a merry man." A Favorite tng quote. Not that anyone asked.
@@Valspartame_Maelstrom That is a fantastic TNG quote. That is always welcomed here. 😎

@@lovebytheletters837 Thank you!
"Grabs Picards hog" If i didnt know what was in store for season 1 id say that this is the worst episode, its sexist and cringy and embarrassing. Few things for Caleb, first its pronounced Jordi not Gordi and second its pronounced Data not Data, Polaski would understand. I never caught that Beverly assults Picard that was a good catch Will. Never a good sign when Riker seems reasonable with his behavior toward women, they really are still finding the characters voices. I think Gene did his legacy a diservice by not letting other people help him with the show, i guess he was really bitter about being shut out of the movies but still. Thanks for the review as always guys keep it up
@@Cap_Olimar This episode is pretty rough, but I think there’s a few coming down the line that are far worse. And yeah, sometimes when we’re recording I can’t exactly tell what Caleb says in general due to various reasons, but then in the edit I catch things. Thanks for the feedback though! And yeah, it sucks that Gene sorta brought the show down sometimes. I love the guy, but he occasionally had some weird ideas that kinda went nowhere. Again, thank you for the comments and feedback and your take on things!
@@thedaystromholodeck if the series came out today not only would the season only be 8 episodes it would have been canceled way before the show got really good.
@@Cap_Olimar Man, that is sadly the truth.
ENGAGE! Firstly this music lives rent free in my head and Riker really needs his beard. Marina Sirtis is really stiff and she tells us such helpful things like the Jellyfish are filled with Joy lol. Love Q De Lancie is by far the best part of the episode but its still very boring and there is way less trial setting than i remembered which i enjoyed. Thanks for the trivia Will and the interview was great who didnt love rugrats and all that jazz.
Thank you so much for the comment, Captain! And yes, that intro music is fantastic. Riker definitely needs the beard. I do look forward to Marina getting better. And yeahhhh, John de Lancie is wonderful. We’re glad you enjoyed the interview! Michael Bell was awesome. Thanks for sticking with us, Olimar!
